Chapter 173 Why Can't You Listen?
Chapter 173 Why Can't You Listen?
"Who is that person at the Gu family's house?"
"I don't know..." Song Kexin's voice began to tremble again, "I only know that Su Lanzhi is also being led by her. She has dirt on everyone, and everyone is afraid of her."
Where is Li Fengche?
"I really don't know..." Her voice was broken into pieces.
He looked at her.
Looking at her trembling body, her bloodshot eyes, and the bruises that inadvertently appeared on her wrists. Those wounds were a mix of old and new, the new ones covering the old ones, and the old ones not fully healed before being covered by new ones.
"What are your conditions?"
Song Kexin froze. She looked up, tears streaming down her face. "Give me a plane ticket. To Singapore. Just to get away from Yu Yuli."
How can I guarantee you won't tell anyone what you said today?
"Mr. Gu." Her voice suddenly fell silent, as still as a stagnant pool. "Perhaps you don't believe me. I've liked you for ten years." She smiled, a smile more painful than tears. "I know you've never seen me. But I truly like you."
She lowered her head, looking at the bruises on her wrist. "I used to be jealous of Lu Xiran. But now I know how ridiculous I was. She's never had anything to do with me, and you've never even seen me. You like her, that's your business. It has nothing to do with me."
Her voice broke into fragments. "But Song Zhihe is different. She took everything from me since I was little. She used me as a target, encouraging me to do all sorts of bad things. That day, when I drugged Lu Xiran, it was her who made me do it. She also gave me the drug." She took out her phone, scrolled through the chat history, and handed it over.
He glanced at it. The screen was filled with dense text, time, location, instructions, line by line, all clearly displayed.
He returned the phone to her.
"Mr. Gu, I just want to leave here." She looked at him, her eyes holding only the last glimmer of light. "I've made arrangements in Singapore. As long as I can leave, I'll be grateful to you for the rest of my life."
She took something out of her pocket and placed it on the coffee table. It was a key, small and old, its bronze luster worn away, leaving only a dull yellow.
"This is the key that Li Fengche gave to Yu Yuli before. I don't know where it came from, but it's very important."
She pushed the key towards her, saying, "Maybe it will be useful to you later."
My fingertips were still trembling when they touched the coffee table.
"Mr. Gu." She looked up. "I only ask you to help me."
He picked up the key. It was very light, as light as a falling leaf. He held it in his hand.
"Go to Singapore, and don't come back." He stood up and made a phone call to Lin Chen. "Lin Chen, arrange for Song Kexin to go to Singapore."
The door was open, and he stood in the doorway without turning around.
A soft, barely suppressed sob came from behind me.
He didn't stop. He walked out, and the door closed softly behind him.
When Gu Yanshen arrived at the office, it was empty.
The insulated bag was still on the coffee table, but she wasn't there. His heart clenched, as if someone had squeezed it from his chest and twisted it hard. He strode to the door of the lounge and pushed it open.
She lay on the bed, curled up in a small ball, the blanket only covering her waist, one hand under the pillow, the other resting on the edge of the bed. Her breathing was very light, almost inaudible, her eyelashes casting a small fan-shaped shadow under her eyes, her lips slightly parted, like a sleeping kitten.
He lay down behind her, very gently. He hugged her from behind, his arms around her waist, pulling her close, his palms against her lower abdomen, feeling the even rise and fall of her breathing.
"Ranran." His voice was low, as if he were speaking to himself. "It's good that you're still here."
She stirred. Her eyelashes fluttered a few times, and she slowly opened her eyes. She saw his hand on her waist, and that one button on his cuff was undone, revealing his slender wrist. She turned around, buried her face in his chest, and pressed her nose against his collarbone.
"What does Song Kexin want with you?"
He was silent for a moment. "She wants to go to Singapore." His chin rested on the top of her head, his voice booming from his chest, muffled. "Yu Yuli abused her. She's covered in bruises."
"Mmm." She snuggled closer to him. "I've heard some things from Fang Rui. Although she drugged me and humiliated me in various ways, she paid the price. I can't let myself be tormented by that kind of person forever."
He held her even tighter. His Ranran was the kindest of all. Even with Song Kexin, even after she had hurt her so badly, she still held a shred of compassion in her heart. Sometimes he felt she was too good, so good that he felt ashamed of himself, so good that he felt all the filth in the world should stay away from her, including himself.
"Uncle." Her hand rested on his chest; he could feel her warmth through his shirt. "Why won't you believe me?"
He didn't speak.
"Can you promise me you'll behave?"
She looked up at him. "What?"
His fingers tightened slightly. "If you encounter a situation like the one on the island, leave me behind and go your own way."
Her eyes changed. It wasn't anger, nor resentment, but something deep that he couldn't understand.
Why?
"slowly."
"If I were in danger, would you abandon me and just leave?"
He was silent.
She watched his silence, watched his Adam's apple bob and then stop, watched the overwhelming fear in his eyes, a fear he himself couldn't even name. Her fingers gently pressed against his lips.
"So, I won't." Her voice was soft, as if she were saying something she had already decided long ago. "Because I love you. It's instinct."
His eyelashes trembled. Those three words, spoken by her, were light and airy, like a feather landing on his heart, yet they weighed him down, making it hard to breathe. He wanted to say, "I love you too."
Those three words were on the tip of his tongue, burning his lips. But he swallowed them back. Because he knew that once he said them, she would be even less likely to leave. She would be more willing to stay by his side, more willing to take the bullet for him, and more willing to be dragged into those endless dangers by him.
He swallowed those words back, his throat aching from swallowing them.
"Don't go anywhere else for a while." He sighed. "Li Fengche has escaped from prison."
She was stunned for a moment. "What?"
"He's seen you before. He can guess the relationship between us."
"So?" She frowned. "You know what's wrong with our relationship? Can't you let anyone else know?"
"This will get you into trouble."
"I'm not afraid."
"I'm scared." His voice suddenly became heavy, as if it had been forcefully pounded out of his chest. He looked into her eyes, and there was something he was afraid to see in them—a light that was fearless, reckless, and ready to give herself completely.
Why can't you listen to me?
