Chapter 403: The Ghost of the Core

Chapter 403: The Ghost of the Core

As Ethan crossed the threshold, the oppressive darkness of the chamber seemed to push back against the tactical lamps of the soldiers.

"Crul, internal grid. Give me light," Ethan commanded under his breath.

[Initiating emergency illumination protocols. Routing residual mana through the secondary crystal orbs.]

A low hum vibrated through the floor, and suddenly, the room erupted in a pale, spectral glow. Orbs of crystalline glass embedded in the ceiling flickered to life, their ancient matrices stabilizing into a steady, cold light. As the shadows retreated, the triumphant cheers of the soldiers died in their throats.

The room was a graveyard of industry.

Massive structures of Cold Steel and reinforced stone lay in ruins, twisted and buckled as if hit by a seismic force. But it wasn’t an earthquake that had done this. Ethan stepped forward, his eyes tracking deep, jagged gouges in the floor—furrows in the metal that looked like a giant claw had ripped through the Cold Steel as if it were a simple aluminum can. Dark, rusty stains painted the walls and floors, the dried remnants of a massacre that had occurred thousands of years ago, yet the copper scent of ancient blood still seemed to linger in the stagnant air.

"Guns up! Perimeter formation!" Jason roared, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic tension.

Every soldier raised their rifle, their knuckles white. The sight of Cold Steel—the same material their heavy industrial lasers struggled to scratch—shredded like paper sent a wave of terror through the ranks. Whatever had been in this room wasn’t just a beast; it was a force of nature.

"Look at these marks," Anne whispered, kneeling to touch a perfectly smooth, diagonal cut through a support pillar. "This wasn’t just claws. This is a spirit-blade strike."

[Host, scans indicate high-intensity combat remnants,] Crul’s voice echoed in Ethan’s mind. [The structural damage suggests a conflict between entities of the Spirit Core rank. The lacerations in the alloy were made by high-frequency mana-blades and biological appendages of equal density.]

The team moved deeper into the wreckage, climbing over shattered consoles and exploded matrices. The deeper they went, the more it looked like a desperate last stand.

"Sir! Over here!" a soldier shouted from the back of the hall.

The group converged on a corner where the floor had been completely hollowed out. A jagged, circular hole, roughly one meter in diameter, tunneled straight down into the dark entrails of the mountain. It wasn’t part of the original architecture; it was a breach.

"Does it go to the Queen’s nest?" Jason asked, peering into the hole with a flare.

"No," Ethan said, looking at the way the edges were melted. "It goes deeper. Into the foundations."

"Should we deploy a drone? Or a scout team?" Jenkins asked, his voice shaking.

"No," Ethan replied, unbuckling his tactical cloak to move more freely. "Secure the perimeter here and continue opening the other seven gates. I’m going down to take a look."

"Sir, that’s suicide!" Jason stepped forward, blocking the path. "Whatever did this could still be down there. If it can shred Cold Steel, your armor won’t mean a thing!"

Ethan looked Jason in the eye, his expression terrifyingly calm. "If the rest of you go down there, it will be a butchery. If I go, there is a chance. Back off, Commander. That’s an order."

Jason hesitated, then slowly stepped aside, his jaw tight.

Anne stepped up beside Ethan, her eyes flashing with a competitive fire. "I’m going with you."

Ethan glanced at her. "Are you sure, Anne? It’s tight, it’s dark, and there’s likely something at the bottom that eats Matriarchs for breakfast."

Anne let out a sharp, elegant laugh. "You don’t seem to have a shred of fear, Ethan. Why should I? Besides, if you find something shiny down there, I want my half."

Ethan burst into a loud, boisterous laugh that echoed through the ruined hall, startling the nervous soldiers. Without another word, he dropped into the hole, sliding feet-first into the narrow, cramped tunnel. Anne followed immediately behind, and soon the two of them were crawling through the claustrophobic darkness.

The descent felt less like a tunnel and more like a high-speed slide into an abyss. They plummeted through the narrow, slick chute until the ground leveled out, depositing them into a space of absolute, suffocating void.

Anne immediately pulled a high-intensity tactical lamp she had snatched from a soldier, but as she clicked it on, she gasped. The beam, designed to pierce the fog, barely extended a meter in front of her. The darkness here didn’t just block light; it seemed to consume it, heavy and viscous as oil.

"I can’t see a thing," Anne whispered, her hand instinctively going to her throat. "The shadows are... hungry."

Ethan, however, stood perfectly still. His Amethyst Eyes flared with a cold, violet radiance, cutting through the sensory suppression as if it didn’t exist. To him, the room was revealed: a massive, bowl-shaped cavern that looked less like a room and more like a biological nest. The walls were lined with a hardened, obsidian-like secretion.

"Crul, scan the perimeter. What the hell am I looking at?"

[Warning: Data synchronization complete,] Crul’s voice sounded uncharacteristically sharp, echoing with a metallic dread. [Accessing the newly unlocked memory fragments of the former Lord Amethyst. Host... if the entity that caused the destruction above is what I suspect, we aren’t just in trouble. We are functionally dead.]

"Explain yourself," Ethan demanded, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the serrated ridges of the nest.

[It is easier to show you. Observe.]

Suddenly, Ethan’s vision shifted. A spectral overlay flickered across his retinas—a nightmare brought to life. It was a grotesque, humanoid serpent, its body covered in a shimmering, metallic-black carapace. It had no eyes, only a massive, circular maw filled with rows of rotating, needle-like teeth. Its upper torso boasted elongated, multi-jointed arms ending in claws that pulsed with a dark, spiritual heat.

"What is that thing?" Ethan asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.

[A Nightmare Claw,] Crul replied. [A cosmic anomaly that should not exist on this plane. At birth, they are already at the Spirit Core rank. In their youth, they reach the peak of the Spirit Collapse realm. As adults... they ascend to the Spirit Soul stage. If a mature specimen is here, it could exterminate every living soul within the Dome before sunset. They are known for two things: an insatiable appetite and a strength that can shatter tectonic plates.]

"Does it have a connection to the Worm Queen?" [Affirmative,] Crul whispered. [The Queen is essentially livestock to a Nightmare Claw. They maintain ’farms’ of Queens to dissolve organic matter into Worm Nectar, which the Claws consume to fuel their ascension to the Spirit Soul stage. However, the data is inconsistent. This Queen is too weak, and the seal was designed to keep the Claw. Something went wrong during the Cataclysm.]

Ethan felt a bead of sweat roll down his temple. "Is it still here?"

Crul hesitated, the holographic data in Ethan’s mind flickering rapidly. [I cannot confirm its current location. We need to explore deeper, but... wait. In the updated memory files, I found a discrepancy. You are incredibly lucky, Host. Scan the base of the central ridge. There should be a pitch-black orb nearby.]

"An orb? For what?"

[Do not ask questions, Host. Find it. If it is what I think it is, it’s the only reason we haven’t been turned into a red smear on the floor already.]
