Chapter 386: A Debt of Blood and Life

Chapter 386: A Debt of Blood and Life

Ethan felt a sharp pang in his chest as he looked into Chloe’s tear-filled eyes. The cold, calculating monarch of Royal vanished for a moment, replaced by the man who had spent countless nights staring at his phone, waiting for a message that never came. His pride had stopped him from using Crul to hunt her down, and seeing her suffer now filled him with a bitter, simmering regret.

"Don’t worry about me, Chloe," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a tender, grounding whisper. "They don’t have the strength to take me down. Not today, not ever. I’ve missed you... more than I can put into words."

The dam finally broke. Chloe let out a choked sob and collapsed into his chest. Ethan wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, his hand gently stroking her hair as she wept into his suit.

"I thought I’d never see you again," Chloe whispered between sobs. "I thought my life was over, that I was just a ghost waiting to be buried."

"You’re not a ghost, and you’re not alone anymore," Ethan replied, kissing the top of her head. "I’m here. And I’m not letting go."

After a few minutes of quiet consolation, they stepped back, though Ethan kept a firm grip on her hand. Chloe’s father stepped forward, his expression a mix of shame and profound relief.

"Mr. Ethan... I am Daniel Brooks, Chloe’s father," he said, bowing his head. "I cannot apologize enough for the situation. I was prepared to sacrifice my daughter’s happiness to save our clan. We have been suffocated by the McKenzie group and the Scavengers... my own father, Jayce Brooks, was gravely wounded and poisoned during the last border skirmish. He is in critical condition. He is our only deterrent, but the poison is eating him alive. He won’t last another week."

Ethan didn’t hesitate. With a flick of his wrist, a shimmering red vial materialized in his hand out of thin air—a feat of spatial storage that made Daniel’s eyes widen in shock.

"This is a High-Grade Healing Potion," Ethan said, pressing the vial into Daniel’s trembling hands. "I guarantee your father will recover the moment he drinks this."

Daniel stared at the vial as if it were a holy relic. "Thank you... thank you so much! We tried every channel to contact Royal, but we were blocked at every turn. We had no way to reach you."

Ethan glanced at Chloe, his gaze softening. "If Chloe had asked, this would have been delivered months ago. Consider this a gift. Your father’s life is worth more to me than a bottle of medicine."

"This favor... it is greater than the earth itself," Daniel stammered, his eyes moist. "The Brooks family will forever be in your debt."

The Matriarch Blackwood, who had been watching the exchange with a sharp smile, finally spoke up.

"If you want my advice, Daniel, you should leave now. Get that potion to your ancestor so he can recover his strength. And then? Move your people. Quickly. Things are about to get... lively in this city," Anne said, her eyes flashing with a glint.

Daniel nodded fervently, bowing one last time to Ethan. Chloe reached out, clutching Ethan’s arm, her eyes pleading to stay.

"Please, let me stay with you," Chloe whispered.

Ethan turned to her, gently cupping her face. He leaned down and pressed a firm, lingering kiss to her forehead. "No, Chloe. It’s better if you go with your father. The situation here is about to get complicated, and I need to know you’re safe to do what I have to do."

He reached into his lapel and pulled out a small, obsidian pin engraved with a gold "R." He pressed it into her palm. "Take this. Go straight to my territory in Massachusetts. Show this pin at the border. My men will provide a secure location for you, your father, and your entire family. Go. Now."

Ethan turned to his five Falcons. "Escort them out of the city immediately. Ensure they reach the border safely."

"But sir," one of the Falcons started, "leaving you with only the Matriarch and—"

Ethan raised a hand, his aura flaring for a split second, silencing the soldier instantly. "Ensure that nothing happens to them. Under any circumstances. Is that understood?"

"Understood, sir!" the Falcons barked in unison.

They formed a tight perimeter around Chloe and Daniel. As she was led away, Chloe looked back one last time, her eyes fixed on Ethan until the crowd swallowed her.

Ethan watched them go, his expression hardening into a mask of cold, lethal intent. The "gentleman" had left the building.

Anne stepped up beside him, her crimson dress rustling as she leaned into his personal space. "So," she purred, "are you ready for the party?"

Ethan adjusted his cuffs, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips.

"You can bet on it. I’m feeling quite lively enough to play with them now."

Anne let out a dark, musical laugh, her eyes shimmering with a predatory light. "Fufu... this is going to be interesting. I take it you’re no longer interested in a quiet, peaceful exit, right?"

Ethan straightened his suit, his expression as cold and unforgiving as a winter tomb. "There’s no need for that anymore. The Scavengers have crossed the line. Whether it was intentional or not doesn’t matter. I’m going to erase the McKenzies from existence, and I’ll take this opportunity to exterminate the Scavengers once and for all."

Anne paused, her smile turning a bit more serious. She slowly slid a delicate, obsidian ring from her finger and pressed it into Ethan’s palm.

"What is this?" asked Ethan, looking down at the cool, dark metal.

"A life insurance policy for you," said Anne, her voice dropping to a low whisper. "I’ve spotted some ’old friends’ in the crowd, and I suspect I won’t be able to stay by your side every second of this gala. It’s better if you have a way to protect yourself when the wolves close in."

Ethan closed his fist around the ring, feeling a faint, thrumming power emanating from the stone. "Don’t worry, Anne. I still have a few tricks up my sleeve to make sure everything goes according to plan."

"Then let’s go," said Anne, hooking her arm through his. "I’m certain they’re already tired of waiting for us."

As they walked toward the grand double doors of the assembly hall, Ethan’s gaze remained fixed forward, but his mind was already miles away, moving pieces across a global chessboard.

"Crul, inform Lena of everything," Ethan thought, his voice echoing in the digital void of his mind. "Make sure not a single member of the McKenzie family leaves our state alive. And deploy the Secret Unit as reinforcements for the Brooks family’s extraction. Once Chloe is safe... I want you to deliver some ’gifts’ to the McKenzies for daring to lay a finger on my woman."

[Understood, Master. Executing Operation: "Death."]

The heavy oak doors swung open, and the thousands of dignitaries and cultivators inside turned as one to watch the pair enter. To the crowd, they looked like the pinnacle of elegance and power. But to Crul processing data in the background, the countdown to a massacre had already reached zero.
