Chapter 207: Safe Zone?
Chapter 207: Safe Zone?
Clementine was glad that she was with Samantha because she gave her cover credibility.
They were headed to the military base and Clementine hoped that she would find Sam there.
The state she found the military base that Sam was supposed to be in told her that things didn’t go as planned but it would be logical for Sam to find the next base to establish the chain of command. This was standard procedure because if the chain of command stll existed, Sam needed to regroup to find out what his next orders were.
He was a soldier through and through so she hoped that Sam would be here.
They walked for quite some time and they saw ’dead’ zombies everywhere.
The army had clearly been at work considering the amount of zombies they saw.
They didn’t dispose of the bodies and it was like the bodies led a trail right to them.
Clementine knew that these people were establishing a safe zone as anyone would be curious as to where the bodies led to.
There it was, Clementine was surprised by not only the state of the base but rather, the vehicles they still had, there were multiple mounted guns at the back of a couple of trucks.
Her jaw dropped because this wasn’t a makeshift base, this was an actual base.
Their base of operation, Clementine raised her hands to show that she wasn’t a threat and Samantha followed suit.
The security was top notch because these people carried heavy machineries.
There was no way in hell any zombie could even come close without getting gunned down.
Evolved or not and Clementine knew that these people were the real deal which made it more impressive that they were combing around the area for what she assumed to be survival.
Even though they were looking for someone, there was hope.
A man approached the two ladies but he didn’t have his gun drawn, this could be because he didn’t perceive them as a threat or didn’t want to frighten the ladies.
"Well, hello you two," The man greeted as he patted them down, searching them for anything that could cause problems within the walls.
He wasn’t handsy too and didn’t touch anywhere he didn’t need to as some men would have used this opportunity to cop a feel.
"THEY ARE CLEAN!" The man shouted, Clementine caught a glimpse of the name on his jacket, it was Jones.
"Go right on ahead ladies,"Jones gestured them forwards and Clementine smiled at him before saying.
"Thank you Jones,"
"How do you know my name!?" Jones exclaimed, theatrically putting both his hands at either side of his cheeks.
"Don’t tell anyone but I’m psychic," Clementine matched his energy and Jones smirked,
He knew that she knew his name from looking at his nametag but he also appreciated that she had a sense of humor.
Clementine knew a first impression was important and she hoped that she had made enough of one for Jones to remember her face.
"Your secret is safe with me," Jones whispered back at her.
Samantha watched how Clementine could easily camouflage herself when conversing with others, it was a useful yet scary skill to have.
"Thank you Jones, hopefully I will see you around," Clementine said, her voice softening.
This was clearly her flirting and Jones wasn’t the most attractive when it came to looks and was balding as well.
This was a step up for him because Clementine was gorgeous and this little conversation helped him discern that she could be interested in him.
Samantha walked behind her, she knew all she had to do was follow Clementine’s lead and she should be fine.
They reached the gate but they couldn’t tell what was behind it.
"Welcome to the east base," The man guarding the gate said before opening it.
Clementine was surprised by what she saw, she saw no one outside but that was to be expected considering this was a base and people couldn’t have that sort of freedom.
The most interesting aspect was the fact that she saw multiple people training but these were kids no more than fourteen.
"Child soldiers?" Clementine thought to herself, the logic no longer applied because this could also be translated as the soldiers training them to defend themselves so they weren’t violating any laws. She did find this unnerving though, one would think that it would be the adults that they would train but children are far more impressionable and would make better soldiers than adults.
She, however, wondered why it was only minors that were being trained?
Clementine was being led to a rather huge building, it looked like a warehouse.
The door sprung open and she saw a bunch of people within that building and she instantly knew this was a safe space.
Clementine heaved a sigh of relief because she has had her own share of assholes in the past few months.
It was nice seeing something was exactly as it seemed for a change, she noticed the air wasn’t stinky despite the number of people in there showing that they had access to basic facilities to keep their hygiene in check.
There wasn’t any bed but Clementine had no interest in staying here for long so she didn’t mind this minor inconvenience. Even though she knew that this might be provided bu tit was unlikely considering she saw people on the floor.
She also noted that men, women, and even children were all in the same room.
This could easily go south as there was no privacy amongst any of them.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Samantha asked, she was beginning to doubt this place because it was too crowded and she wasn’t a fan of crowds.
"I’m afraid this is the only way," Clementine reminded her.
Samantha sighed and the moment they walked into the building, all eyes descended upon them but it was more of curiosity than anything else but the eyes held no ill intent.
