Chapter 854: Unwillingness
Chapter 854: Unwillingness
He’d had his eye on that position for a long time, but didn’t expect it to be snatched away midway. If the person who snatched it was more capable than him, he would have accepted it as fate. But the person was someone inferior to him in every way, and that made it hard for him to accept.
"I know you’ve wanted this position for a long time, and I also know you’re dissatisfied with this outcome, but I think, for the people above to give him this position, he must have something exceptional. Otherwise, the people up there aren’t stupid, leaving so much money unearned just to watch it go down the drain." The good-natured middle-aged man patted the young man’s shoulder, offering him the most sincere comfort in the name of money.
"What exceptional ability? Good looks? Tall height? What use are these things? Can they get us money?" The young man sneered, impatience showing in his eyes.
"There you go again, getting yourself into a corner? Thinking too much is useless. We should just honestly do what the people above have assigned us, then we’ll get our money without worry. How nice that is, why bother climbing so high? Falling will hurt." The middle-aged man didn’t quite understand the young man’s ambition; to him, such a life was satisfying enough. No worries about food or drink, no need to sacrifice oneself for more money. After all, money is something you can’t take with you when you’re born or when you die; having too much isn’t useful either.
"It’s because you think like that that you’ve been wasting away here for so many years. I’m different from you; I’m still young, I want to see more of the outside world. If I don’t fight while I’m young, I won’t have the chance to do so when I’m old." The young man shot a glance at the middle-aged man, full of ambition, as if the word ’ambition’ was etched on his face.
The middle-aged man looked at him, the words of advice stuck at the tip of his tongue, and ultimately swallowed them back.
"It’s fine for a young person to want to charge upward, but in our line of work, the most important thing is to be careful and prudent. Don’t be too clever for your own good, only those who can endure live long." The middle-aged man sighed heavily and spoke to the young man.
It was his own experience, but it was clear the young man didn’t take it to heart. He just raised an eyebrow at the middle-aged man, a look of disdain in his eyes, as if saying, what right do you have to advise me when you ended up like this?
The middle-aged man saw the young man’s expression and didn’t get angry, just sighed inwardly at how young and inexperienced the other was.
"Alright, I won’t say anymore. If the people above come down with new directives, let me know. If not, don’t bother me, I’m off to have some fun." The young man spoke, casually grabbing a pack of cigarettes from the table and then disappearing from the middle-aged man’s sight.
"Ah~ still too young, doesn’t listen to the elderly, don’t know what it means to suffer from not listening to the experienced." The middle-aged man shook his head as he spoke, then left the room quietly, slipping unobtrusively into the bustling crowd.
The conversation between the two didn’t last long, unnoticed when they came, and silent when they left.
The young man returned to what he called home as dawn approached. The boss had spent a wary night in the room, and upon hearing the door open, knew the young man had returned, oddly finding a moment of peace in his heart.
He wasn’t afraid of the young man appearing before him, it was the young man not appearing that scared him. If he showed up, the boss would know how to deal with it; if he didn’t, the boss wouldn’t even know how he’d end up ruined.
Among everyone in the room, only Xu Ke wasn’t worried about anything, eating and sleeping as usual. The boss looked through the wall towards Xu Ke’s location, envious of his simplicity, envious of his ignorance.
"Sorry, I don’t know what happened yesterday. Suddenly, I was really tired, and I fell into a deep sleep right after getting back to the room, just woke up now. You two seemed to have had a lot of fun yesterday, judging by the dark circles under your eyes and the tired look." Xu Ke came out of the room, just in time to bump into the other two, and remarked on their weary appearance.
Hearing Xu Ke’s words, the boss instinctively glanced at the young man beside him, who didn’t notice the boss’s expression, responding naturally while looking at Xu Ke, "Yes, we were a bit wild yesterday. We met a few brothers, and everyone got together for drinks, got a little carried away."
"So that’s how it was." Xu Ke’s gaze moved from the young man’s face to the boss’s. Likely because of the guilt in his heart, the boss instinctively avoided Xu Ke’s gaze but quickly recovered, looking up to meet his eyes.
"Yes, it’s a pity you went to bed so early last night, otherwise you could have come out with us. I could’ve introduced you to them, we’ve known each other for years, similar personalities. I’m sure you’d like them too." The boss quickly responded.
"That’s really a pity. Next time you gather, call me, and I promise I won’t sleep so early." Xu Ke said with a chuckle.
"Hey, are you two going to the bathroom? If not, I’ll go freshen up first." Xu Ke naturally steered the conversation away and politely asked the two.
"You go first, we’re not in a hurry to use it." The young man gave Xu Ke a gentle smile and responded warmly.
As Xu Ke walked unsuspectingly into the bathroom, the young man’s smile vanished instantly, the coldness and distain in his eyes unmistakable.
Hearing the sound of running water from the bathroom, the young man turned to the boss, "You did well earlier, keep it up. If he senses anything is off, you need to watch out for yourself and your family." The young man threatened the boss and was satisfied seeing his face turn instantly pale upon hearing this.
"Don’t put on such a dejected face. Think about it differently. If you can keep deceiving him, your family remains safe. You should know, ensuring your family’s safety in this town isn’t easy. You just have to move your lips, show a little acting skill, and you can achieve what others would risk their lives for. Shouldn’t that make you happy?" The young man seriously countered.
"Happy, very happy." The boss forced a smile, trying to cover a face that almost seemed to cry, as though his eyes and mouth betrayed the pain and struggle inside, making the smile appear so bitter it was worse than not smiling at all.
"Tch, useless." The young man said, somewhat disdainfully, at the expression on the boss’s face.
