Chapter 718: The First Wife’s Son
Chapter 718: The First Wife’s Son
The woman speaking was one of the more favored illegitimate daughters of Bart Calvin. Her mother was a university professor, and as the Chinese would say, they came from an intellectual family. As a result, the girl’s academic performance was quite good. Because of this, she always held herself in high regard, looking down on others. Her name was Marian Calvin.
Marian had quite a temper. The servant she sent to fetch someone, after receiving Marian’s instructions, almost didn’t dare to delay a second and hurried towards the stables.
"Marian, what you’re doing is not right. If he really passes Dad’s test, then he’ll be employed as our teacher. How could a teacher be a servant? What you’re doing shows great disrespect to the teacher and to Dad’s decision as well." A black-haired girl turned her head, her expression having some oriental features, and said.
Her name was Nancy Calvin, Marian’s half-sister, sharing the same father but different mothers. Her mother was a Chinese exchange student.
Looking at Nancy’s face, Marian’s expression showed disdain, "Don’t try to use Dad to pressure me. You’re just trying to put on a show here because of a few drops of oriental blood in you. Who are you trying to impress? I’m not Dad; I won’t fall for your tricks." Marian rolled her eyes at Nancy and said.
Upstairs, the girls’ bickering continued, while downstairs, the twin brothers had already approached Xu Ke.
Fortunately, where Xu Ke was sitting was on the outermost edge of the crowd. The task of taming wild horses in the stables continued, and no one paid attention to this unremarkable spot. For this reason, the arrival of the two brothers didn’t cause any commotion.
"Is the food good?" the elder brother Job asked.
"Very fresh, thank you for the hospitality." Seeing the two brothers, Xu Ke guessed their identities and stood up from the comfortable chair he was sitting in, nodding at them as he spoke.
"Why are you sitting here instead of going inside to take a look? Aren’t you afraid of not getting the job?" the younger brother Albo asked with a puzzled look.
Although Job and Albo were twin brothers, Job’s gaze appeared more steady, while the younger Albo seemed more lively and nimble.
"Why should I be afraid? If I miss this job, I can always find another. I won’t starve to death. Besides, I don’t believe I won’t get this job." Xu Ke said with a gentle smile.
"With so many people competing, how can you be so sure you’re definitely going to get the position?" This question piqued not only Albo’s interest but also made Job take on a listening posture.
"Probably an innate confidence. I don’t believe I’ll lose to others." Xu Ke’s smile remained gentle, with a characteristic oriental subtlety, but his words were anything but subtle, brimming with an unstoppable sharpness.
"We really like you. We hope you can become the teacher for this course." Job said while looking at Xu Ke. At that moment, Marian’s servant arrived. She first looked at the expressions of the two brothers, then spoke to Xu Ke, "The Miss invites you to meet her."
The two brothers recognized whose servant it was, and their expressions turned somewhat ugly. Albo’s expression carried a hint of anger, which he managed to control with Job’s help.
Marian’s behavior was undoubtedly an attempt to put them down, making them seem unjustifiably inferior in comparison to her.
"Please excuse me for a moment." Xu Ke showed them a slightly apologetic smile and then followed the servant to meet Marian.
When Xu Ke arrived, he didn’t see Marian herself but ran into Nancy coming out of the room, "You’re the one who just tamed that black horse, right? You’re quite skilled. I have high hopes for you and hope to see you at the Calvin family one day." Nancy stopped in front of Xu Ke, looked him up and down, and then spoke gently.
"Thank you for your kind words." Xu Ke smiled, maintaining basic politeness.
Nancy didn’t say anything else to Xu Ke and chose to turn and leave.
"Please wait here for a moment." The maid who brought Xu Ke here quietly instructed, then knocked on the door and said loudly, "Miss Marian, the person you wanted to see is here now. He is outside the door. Do you want to meet him?"
As soon as the maid finished speaking, there was the sound of something being smashed on the ground from inside, "Why should I see him? Let him leave. Does he deserve to meet me?" Marian’s voice came from inside with no intention of opening the door, and the sound of things being thrown around continued.
The maid’s expression turned somewhat somber hearing Marian’s words. She gave Xu Ke a slightly vulnerable and apologetic smile, "I’m sorry to have made you come all this way for nothing. I’ll escort you out now."
"It’s alright. I can manage on my own." Xu Ke’s expression was impeccable, not showing any unpleasantness due to Marian’s attitude. He acted naturally and left as if he hadn’t heard anything.
Behind him, Xu Ke could still faintly hear an infuriated girl from the other side of the door spouting words like ’pig’ and ’dog’ that seemed never-ending.
Within a short period, Xu Ke had already met four of the Calvin family children and had a preliminary understanding of their personalities. Xu Ke found the Calvin family increasingly intriguing.
As Xu Ke was walking out alone, a tall man with vibrant green hair approached him from the other side of the corridor, "Stop, who are you, and why are you here?"
This man was towering, visually estimated to be over 190 cm, close to 200 cm, a head taller than Xu Ke, looking at him like a hunting leopard, with eyes brimming with malice.
"I came to apply for the equestrian teacher position. I’m here because a servant, claiming to be from Miss Marian, told me she wanted to see me, and that’s why I came over." Xu Ke only glanced at the man before lowering his head.
"Look up." The man’s voice came from above Xu Ke’s head, and the intense perfume on him was quite discomforting. Xu Ke quietly held his breath and looked up at the speaking man.
"Have you finished your interview?" The man’s expression was unreadable, his deep blue eyes like the most beautiful sapphires in the world.
"Yes, I am now waiting for the results." Xu Ke nodded and said.
"What’s your name?"
"Xu Ke."
"Xu Ke." The man repeated Xu Ke’s name in an awkward accent. "I’ve remembered your name. My name is Claude Calvin." After stating his name, Claude left without looking back.
