Chapter 1767 - 1820: Parting Is Inevitable

As soon as the call was connected, Li Yifei heard the sound of rushing water and instinctively asked, "Are you in the bathroom?""No, I’m doing something I love!" Xu Shanshan replied.

Something she loves? Images flashed through Li Yifei’s mind, making him chuckle as he said, "Taking a bath?"

"No, I was just comforting myself, and then this annoying thing called me!"

Xu Shanshan spoke boldly and directly, which made Li Yifei skeptical. He chuckled again and said, "Alright then... why don’t you continue?"

"I’m not in the mood. So, brother-in-law, what do you want from this little lady?" Xu Shanshan asked.

Li Yifei ran his hand through his hair, thinking that this girl was still not over it. So he said, "Alright, sweetheart, did you get there with your Sister Fangqing?"

"Yes."

"That’s good, I was wondering why you both didn’t tell me when you arrived!" Li Yifei said.

"Yes."

"Alright, sweetheart, it’s my fault. I’m almost healed now, and after a while I can come home. By then, you both should be less busy, and we can have a gathering. How about that?"

"Forget it, I’m not going to make it hard for you. Is there something else you want to talk about?"

"Yes, there are some issues!" Li Yifei said, "Sashar just called and mentioned a few things. Sashar is the prince who welcomed you today. He told me that the terrorist groups I dealt with last time are quite active now and even want to do something to me. You and Fangqing going to Dubai at this time isn’t great; you might be targeted by those people, so be extra careful. This isn’t a joke!"

Xu Shanshan was making faces at the mirror, biting her lips absentmindedly.

"What’s that noise?" Li Yifei asked when Xu Shanshan didn’t respond.

Xu Shanshan said, "It’s nothing. Is that all?"

"It’s not a big deal, but you need to stay alert. It’s not a joke, and I’m focusing on recovering!"

"Alright, don’t worry, I’m here. I’ll protect Sister Fangqing twenty-four seven and definitely won’t let other men get close to her!"

"What are you talking about? It’s terrorists you should be careful of, not other men!"

"Ha, to you, any other man is a terrorist!" Xu Shanshan teased.

"Hmm, there’s nothing wrong with that," Li Yifei was momentarily at a loss for words and paused for several seconds before saying, "Alright, Shanshan, don’t deliberately provoke me. You know, I’m worried about you too. The Middle East isn’t like anywhere else, it’s arguably the most dangerous place in the world, so really be careful!"

Seeing that she had teased him enough, Xu Shanshan adapted her attitude and said, "I know, I’ll be careful. Do you want to speak to Sister Fangqing?"

"It’s too late now, I won’t talk to her. Get some rest and adjust for a couple of days before working."

"Alright then, goodnight!" Xu Shanshan said.

"Wait." Li Yifei called out.

"Anything else?"

"Yes, my darling Shanshan hasn’t kissed me yet." Li Yifei whispered into the phone.

Behind him, the Holy Maiden was busy, and even though he whispered, she would hear it. But the Holy Maiden never interfered in his conversations with the women back home, flirting and such, not because she didn’t care, but because... she couldn’t manage it even if she wanted to. She might as well pretend not to hear.

Xu Shanshan rolled her eyes at the mirror and said, "No kiss."

"Come on, just one kiss, just a peck, that’s all." Li Yifei pleaded.

Xu Shanshan finally couldn’t hold back and burst into laughter, saying, "You rascal, I kissed you. I’m going to sleep now. Don’t call me for the next twelve hours. Go bother your Sister Fangqing instead!"

Li Yifei, who had received a kiss, listened to the dialing tone on the phone, turned around, and made a face at the Holy Maiden who happened to glance over. In return, he got a blank stare from her, which stimulated him into jumping off the sofa and rushing into the kitchen to hug the Holy Maiden. Her hands were scrubbing dishes, and she shouted as her waist was attacked, "What are you doing?"

"Stop talking, kiss me!" Li Yifei intentionally mumbled, and before the Holy Maiden could refuse, he hugged her and kissed her.

Happy days must come to a pause. Li Yifei’s injury isn’t healed yet, but the Holy Maiden has to leave. In a few days, there’s a very important event for the Holy War Organization which requires her to attend and sacrifice.

Upon hearing the word sacrifice, Li Yifei was shocked, but the Holy Maiden explained that it’s just sacrificing some livestock, not people.

"Oh, as long as you’re safe." Li Yifei patted his chest.

The Holy Maiden smiled with pursed lips and said, "Why do you care about me so much?"

"Of course I care, I care a lot," Li Yifei nodded.

"Then what will you do? I’ll send someone to take care of you. Although your body is fine now, the injury hasn’t healed. I’ll come back to take care of you once I’m finished over there!" The Holy Maiden said.

"No need, I’m also going home. I’ve been out for over a month, it’s time to go home."

The Holy Maiden looked deeply at Li Yifei without trying to persuade him again. If she had met him years earlier, it wouldn’t have been like this, but years earlier he wasn’t who he is now and couldn’t have become her heart’s torment. The Holy Maiden recalled a Chinese saying Li Yifei mentioned: Everything is meant to be, perhaps this is all fated.

When it was time for romance, the two had been tangled together; when it was time for heroism, the two were quite magnanimous. After simply packing their luggage, they each carried a suitcase and got on a helicopter to fly to Los Angeles. Upon arrival, there were two cars waiting. Li Yifei’s car was on the left, taking him to the airport, while the Holy Maiden’s car was on the right, taking her to the Holy War Organization’s base.

On the helicopter, the two didn’t exchange words. After so many days, much had already been said, and with outsiders present now, there was naturally no need for more discussion. Some things were understood without having to be spoken.

A glance was enough to convey many messages.

Getting off the plane and about to part ways, Li Yifei paused to look at the Holy Maiden, who also stopped and turned to look at him.

Li Yifei grinned, waved and said, "Careful out there."

"You too, take care."

With that, they both turned away together, without more words. Although the next meeting would be a fight to the death—or at least for the Holy Maiden. If she didn’t kill Li Yifei, she herself would die once.

This death wasn’t the physical kind, but a death of the heart. Losing meant failing against her internal demon, requiring her to shed her identity and start anew as someone else.
