Chapter 195: Our Happy Ending
Chapter 195: Our Happy Ending
“Let’s talk about this again after we’ve given it some more thought. There is still time because the king is still the king and the crown is nothing more than the one next in line,” Bradon reminded me sternly.
I hated to admit it but he was right. We did have time and taking hasty actions might not work in our favor. Talking to the crown prince about his plans after he becomes king when his father is very ill might come across as us being too insensitive and rude.
“Fine...” I muttered.
I sat up on the bed and crossed my legs under me as I folded my arms under my chest. Bradon still laid on his side while looking quite relaxed. I felt taken aback after finding that he wasn’t at all eager to help me arrange a meeting with the prince and that was because the second ask that I was about to ask for was even harder than the first.
What does Bradon think about the Vulkan family?
“About the second source of support, the Vulkan family...” I said before trailing off.
I could tell that I had Bradon’s undivided attention and that made me wonder for a moment if I was approaching this the wrong way. Destroying the Vulkan family wasn’t something that I wanted. Although the Vulkan family were cunning and calculating, they did step in to provide my family with financial support when we needed it. Of course, that came at the expense of shackling my sister down with an arranged marriage ever since she was just a girl.
Apart from that, the Vulkans didn’t quite do anything that directly harmed us. Anthony had always been kind to both my sister and me. Bradon probably wouldn’t agree to helping me if that meant destroying his family along with mine. He might not let me out of here alive if I proposed something so drastic and harmful to his family. Thankfully, that wasn’t necessary at all.
“What do you have in mind?” he asked quite coldly.
“It’s quite simple actually. All we need to do is to convince the Vulkan to dissolve the union between our two families. After the royal family no longer supports the Alnault, the family will no longer hold value as a noble family with the closest ties to the royal family. When that happens, the Vulkan family will no longer have any reason to support or even associate itself with the Alnault anymore,” I explained while keeping my eyes on Bradon’s face.
“And then? What happens next?” Bradon urged for me to continue.
It seemed to me that Bradon was taking this much better than I had expected. He wasn’t outright against it and I figured that it must be because the plan did not involve harming his family. The plan only entailed the Vulkan family ditching the Alnault family and nothing more.
“Your family can work with another noble family or even try to form an alliance with the crown prince directly when the time comes. The result that they desire would still be the same. Then once the Alnault family has lost its power, the arranged marriage between Diana and Anthony can be dissolved. That’s right, after the divorce we can stop pretending and go our separate ways. Just like our families won’t have anything to do with each other anymore, we won’t have anything to do with each other either,” I continued explaining.
When the union between our family comes to an end, so should the marriage arrangement between my sister and Anthony. At the same time, that would mean that this farce marriage and this twisted relationship or whatever it was between Bradon and me can come to an end as well. It would really be the perfect ending for everyone.
The Alnault family would fall from grace and my parents would get the punishment that they deserve. Diana can continue living with the love of her life and come out of hiding. Anthony would be free to fall in love again with someone else and marry the woman that he wants. Bradon would be free of this burden of replacing his brother and I would be finally done with this place and everyone in this phase of my life. I wasn’t sure what I planned to do with my future, but perhaps, returning to my previous job might be a good start. There was a risk that my boss might not take me back though.
“I think this will be a good ending for everyone and for us too. We can both go back to normal life. You can stop pretending to be your brother and I can stop pretending to be my sister. I know that you hate being in this pretend relationship with me, right? So, why don’t we just help each other out so that we can both go our separate ways? When that time comes, we can just pretend that none of this ever happened,” I resumed my explanation when Bradon continued to maintain his silence.
I was so certain that he would agree to cooperate with me because it would also benefit him if this plan succeeded. After all, there was no way that he wanted the two of us to be stuck in this fake marriage until the end of our lives. I offered him a beautiful smile as I waited patiently for him to agree with my proposal.
“Pretend that none of this ever happened...” he murmured coldly.
The ways his piercing blue gaze stared deeply into my eyes told me that I must have misread him again. It felt like the temperature in the room dropped by several degrees. Bradon had been nice to me for a while and I must have gotten used to being on his good side because the dangerous look in his eyes had me feeling very vulnerable. It must have slipped my mind just how intimidating Bradon could be when he wanted to be.
I pulled the covers up to better cover my chest when I realized that I was still naked and in bed with Bradon.
