Chapter 98: Victorious
Chapter 98: Victorious
People in the distance that were thinking of helping Stanley fight the Crawler watched in awe as he killed the monster while making it look so effortless.
They wondered how he was able to fight the monster. What were his powers? How was he able to move like that?
They quickly got rid of such thoughts and looked for somewhere else they could help.
Stanley stood amidst the rain now that the black cloud had vanished. A weird feeling emerged in his heart. Was it happiness? No. It surely was not.
But why not? Was he not supposed to be happy that he had managed to fight a Crawler and kill it? Was he not supposed to be happy that he got his revenge?
He was certainly satisfied to get his revenge, but happy? He couldn’t tell.
"Well... at least I got my revenge for you, Mom," the said softly to himself, his voice getting lost in the rain. "Please be happy wherever you are, even if I am not."
He gave a deep sigh and looked at his sword. It seemed slightly worn out after the fight, but it still looked way better than other people’s swords did after a fight against the Crawler.
Maybe it was the benefit of using a sword made up of something called steel instead of just iron.
The ground thud in the distance, grabbing Stanley’s attention. ’Right,’ he thought. The fight wasn’t over.
He ran towards where he could see the closest Crawlers in the distance. When he arrived, there were already people fighting it, and many were on the sidelines too.
So, he moved on to another one, and then the next one.
Finally, on the fourth one did he come across a Crawler that some Defenders were fighting against.
One of the Defenders seemed extremely tired, with no one else to switch for him this far in the corner.
"Hey! Switch with me," Stanley said to the man.
The young man looked at Stanley with a slightly surprised look. "Stanley?" he called out.
"Johan?" Stanley spoke. It was the guy with the Strength-enhancement powers like his, only he had to burn away his fat to bring out his powers.
From what Stanley could see, he had burned away too much of his body fat and was reaching the end of it. Any more and it would turn out bad for him.
"Leave, I’ll take your place," Stanley quickly said.
"R-really?" the young man looked happy.
Stanley saw the Crawler’s limb fall on the young man, crushing him instantly. It was only a vision of the future.
He quickly grabbed the young man by the collar and pulled him back. "Get away from here," he shouted and went in.
Soon a heated battle started between Stanley and the Crawler, which this time around had to focus on not just Stanley but also the other Defenders.
Stanley fought alone, while the others seemed to fight in pairs. As the fight continued, for some reason, Stanley felt like he could see slightly further into the future with each passing minute.
He had started by being able to see about 1 second into the future. Now, he could see about 3 seconds into the future.
’What is going on?’ he wondered. Had his powers not awakened yet? Was his power of Foresight going to continue getting stronger?
Stanley fought, unsure what was going on with his body. However, he soon didn’t care about it as the fight got more intense.
The fighters on the other side were starting to get tired as well. They didn’t have the same physical strength and endurance as Stanley after all.
As Stanley continued to fight, he noticed that one of the Defenders to the side had to retire after getting his left arm bent the wrong way by the Crawler’s attack.
At the same time, the other man that was helping him also had to back away as he could not fight the monster alone.
The burden increased on the other two that were near the limb that was now free. Stanley assumed someone would take care of the free limb, but unfortunately, there was no one there.
All the other Defenders were away fighting the other Crawlers.
Stanley fought his own battles while keeping an eye on the two that were close to death. "You two!" he shouted through the rain. "Leave!"
They heard him, but they couldn’t do that. Leaving here, meant that the Crawler would crush Stanley and then follow them. If by some chance it did not follow them, then it would be worse as it would go for the Dulls on the farm.
They had to stay and fight.
"I said leave!" Stanley shouted at them, but the two men showed bravery, which to Stanley looked like stupidity, and stood their ground.
They died where they stood, doing their best to protect the people of the city while dealing as much damage as they could.
Stanley felt anger and frustration at the two who had just died, but he also felt his respect grow for them.
He turned around toward the monster that was now all alone and as motivation filled him, he went in to fight.
He had already come up with a way to fight the monster. Whether it was a feasible idea or not, he was going to have to see that now.
Stanley dodged the incoming limb and jumped onto it. Then, instead of attacking the limb, he ran on top of it.
His spiked shoes kept him steady while he reached the top of the monster and stood on its main body. He started attacking that body as much as he could while waiting for the monster to fight back.
As he expected, the monster attacked him too. Only, Stanley simply had to dodge the Crawler’s attacks and it could hit itself.
The Crawler buckled multiple times under its own strengths, and it still continued to hit itself.
After a couple of minutes of whacking itself, the Crawler finally lost its regenerative capabilities. After that, Stanley easily killed it.
The monster disappeared in a plume of smoke as Stanley fell through it, landing on the ground, victorious against another one.
