Strongest Nova: Path of Vengeance

Chapter 50: Mayor’s Announcement

Chapter 50: Mayor’s Announcement

People gathered throughout the town around roads and any open place where the speakers could be heard clearly.

As the sun peaked through the top of the cliff and sunlight fell into the land, 10 am came closer and closer.

It was about time for the mayor’s speech.

Quite a few Defenders were working near the veil, but even they were curious and ready to hear what the mayor had to say this time around.

Stanley, his brother, and many of the Defenders stood around the Defenders’ training ground where their speaker was attached to. There was a small commotion going around as the defenders wondered exactly what it was about.

Then, after a small burst of static, the Mayor’s voice came through the speakers.

"Good morning everyone, I hope your day is full of luck," the Mayor’s old voice came through the speaker. "This is my first time addressing you as a whole since the tragedy 3 months ago."

"I would make the excuse of saying I have been incredibly busy with my own work and couldn’t get to all of your problems, but the truth is that I haven’t been that busy."

The mayor’s words caused a bit of a stir amongst the people, even amongst the Defenders themselves.

The mayor seemed to have anticipated this, so he didn’t speak for a good 10 seconds before continuing.

"My work have ended nearly 2 weeks ago," the man said. "However, I want to make it clear that I’m not neglecting you all."

"The truth is, I am tired. I am tired of this job. I had thought that a few weeks of rest would help me get back to work with more enthusiasm than ever. However, that is only leading me to feel even more tired."

"I cannot tell you whether I will ever have the same enthusiasm to help you all as I did in the older days," the mayor spoke. "I am getting very old, and so I am getting weaker too."

The townsfolk were getting worried at that point. They couldn’t tell where this announcement was going at all.

"So, I have decided to remove myself from the position of the Mayor," he spoke.

The crowd was in shambles trying to understand the implications of the words they had just heard. The Mayor leaving would create a vacuum of authority. Were people going to fight for it?

"As for the next mayor, I have already made my choice as well," the mayor said, surprising everyone. "Bradley Reed is going to be your next mayor."

Sounds of confusion ran throughout the city, while amongst the Defenders, only shocks and surprise could be heard from the crowd.

Stanley’s eyes went wide when he heard the news. "Brother, you are—"

His brother’s face showed equally as much shock as everyone else.

Yasu sighed in the distance and walked up to Bradley. He put forth a hand for a shake. "Congrats, I didn’t think you would be chosen so simply," he said with a soft smile.

Yasu was probably hoping to be the next mayor as well, but the title was transferred to Bradley without any inkling from the mayor.

"Thank you," Bradley shook his hands. As soon as he left his hand, he heard someone else cry out in the distance.

"You bastard!" a loud voice separated the crowd as George came rushing down toward Bradley.

Bradley looked at George with serious eyes.

"What did you do?" he demanded. "How did you get him to accept you in a single day? Did you blackmail him? Poison him? I heard you went to meet him last night, how did you make him make that decision so quickly?"

"I didn’t," Bradley said. "I have no idea where this is coming from."

"Like hell I will believe your words," George shouted. "Tell me right now."

"I’m telling you, I don’t know," Bradley said. "Now leave. You’re ruining my mood."

"Bastard!"

Without any hint, George punched Bradley.

"Stop!" Yasu shouted.

In the next moment, he grabbed George’s hand out of nowhere, stopping it before it went any further.

Bradley was a step late with his two palms and only activated his technique a second later. George’s hand slipped through Yasu’s hand and finally, the man stopped.

"You wanna fight too?" George asked Yasu.

"Sure, come on," Yasu said, not backing down.

George looked at the man and clicked his tongue in disgust. "To think you would be okay with him choosing someone that only graduated 3 months ago," he said.

"It’s the mayor’s decision. We adhere to it," Yasu said.

George looked at the two and scoffed. "Fine, I’m leaving. I don’t want to deal with you pathetic people right now," he said and left.

The mayor was still speaking through the microphone, telling the entire town how he planned to remain the mayor for a little longer until the new mayor got hang of everything.

The old man promised that it would be done by the time the census was complete.

While the mayor started going towards the end of his speech, Stanley remained there with a face full of shock. Unlike the others, his shock did not come from the speech, but rather from the power that Yasu seemed to have used just now.

’What was that?’ he wondered. Having experienced it just once, he couldn’t really tell what had happened, only that he wanted to experience itself to find out.

What was most shocking was that not a single person there reacted to what had happened just now at all. ’Is it possible that I am the only one that noticed that?’ he thought.

He looked around and the crowd was starting to disperse now that mayor’s speech had come to a conclusion.

Yasu left a few seconds later, leaving Bradley by himself again.

Bradley sighed and turned toward Stanley. "Are you okay?" he asked.

Getting pulled out of his thoughts, Stanley was a little disoriented. "Yes?" he asked.

"It’s your day off, right? Go and rest," Bradley told his brother. "I will go and see if I can talk to the mayor to see what is going on."
