Arc 2 - Bhagavad Gītā Parva - Chapter 14 - Rāja-Vidyā Rāja-Guhya Yoga (Bhagavad Gītā IX)
The Yoga of Sovereign Knowledge and the Sovereign Secret
Vaiśampāyana said:
Having heard of the imperishable Brahman and the ways of death and return, Arjuna’s heart grew tranquil, yet he longed to know the mystery of Śrī Bhagavān—how the Lord, unseen yet all-pervading, governs all creation. Then spoke the Supreme, the Eternal Friend, whose compassion is the light of the worlds.
The Royal Science and the Royal Secret
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“To thee, O sinless son of Pṛthā,
I shall now declare that truth most high—
The royal science, secret supreme,
The purifier none can deny.
“Directly known, in harmony found,
Easy to practise, imperishable this;
But men without faith in this holy path
Return to transient worlds of bliss.”
Vaiśampāyana said, “The Lord here calls this Yoga the rāja-vidyā (royal knowledge) and rāja-guhya (royal secret)—for it grants both wisdom and direct experience of the Divine, cleansing the soul beyond all ritual purity.”
The Lord’s All-Pervading Presence
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“Unmanifest, I pervade the world—
All beings rest in Me;
Yet I abide not in them,
Behold My mystery.
“And yet the beings dwell not in Me—
Mark well this divine might;
Sustaining all, creating all,
I stand apart in light.
“As winds that roam through boundless sky
Ever in the sky abide,
So all beings dwell in Me,
Yet I in none reside.”
Though all creatures live in Him as waves in the sea, Śrī Bhagavān
remains the witness—immanent yet untouched, pervading yet beyond all measure. His detachment is the secret of His lordship.
Creation and Dissolution
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“At Kalpa’s end, O son of Kuntī,
All beings reach My nature again;
When Kalpa dawns, I send them forth,
Their course begins again.
“Resting in My own power serene,
I fashion them, yet stand apart;
Nature, under My gaze divine,
Brings forth each moving heart.
“Yet these acts touch Me not at all—
I sit, detached, nor act nor scheme;
By Me, the silent witness, still,
Doth Nature move and dream.”
Creation flows from the Lord’s presence, not from His personal striving. Like sunlight evoking life yet remaining unstained, the Supreme oversees the rhythm of manifestation and rest.
The Ignorant and the Divine-Natured
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“The foolish know not My true form,
The great Lord of all that is;
In mortal guise they see Me bound,
Deluded by My wondrous bliss.
“Vain are their hopes, their deeds, their lore—
Possessed of demon birth;
But high-souled men of divine nature
Know Me, source of heaven and earth.
“With single mind they worship Me,
Knowing Me as all that lives;
In praise and steadfast service blest,
They offer all that is.”
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
Those blinded by ego perceive only the finite form, while the pure-hearted recognize the Infinite clothed in the finite. The wicked mock the Lord’s descent; the wise adore it as grace.
Forms of Worship
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“Ever glorifying, firm in vows,
Bowing down, they worship Me;
Others, by knowledge sacrifice,
See Me as One, in unity.
“Some behold Me manifold,
As diverse deities they pray;
Yet all such worship, born of faith,
Reaches Me in its own way.”
The Lord affirms that all sincere worship, whether directed to one form or many, ascends to Him, for He alone is the object of every offering.
The Lord as the Essence of All
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“I am the Vedic sacrifice,
The sacred rite enjoined of old;
The mantra and the healing herb,
The fire, the gift, the gold.
“I am the Father, Mother too,
The grandsire and the goal;
The syllable Om in sacred sound,
The purifier of the soul.
“I am the hymn, the Veda’s core,
The witness, home, and friend;
The seed unfailing, death and life—
The source from first to end.”
The Lord declares Himself the heart of all: the giver, the gift, and the receiver. Every ritual and every act of goodness has Him as its silent essence.
The Cycle of Heaven and Return
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“The Vedic-knowers drink the Soma,
Cleansed of sin by holy rite;
They reach the gods’ celestial world,
And revel in its light.
“But when their store of merit wanes,
They fall again to mortal birth;
Thus seeking pleasure by sacrifice,
They go and come on earth.”
The Lord warns that even heaven is transient. Ritual merit exhausts itself; only union with the Eternal delivers beyond rebirth.
The Devotee’s Security
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“They who think on Me alone,
Whose minds no other seek—
For them I bring what they require,
And guard the gain they keep.
“Even they who worship gods with faith
In other names than Mine,
Worship Me, though not aright—
For all the paths entwine.
“I am the Lord and sole Enjoyer
Of all the rites they frame;
But knowing not My highest truth,
They miss the deathless flame.”
Devotion, even if misguided in form, is not lost; all love ascends to Him. Yet only the pure vision of His unity grants liberation from decay.
The Way of Offerings
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“They who worship to the fathers go
Unto the fathers’ place;
They who serve the spirits dark
To spirits find their race.
“But they who worship Me alone,
Their souls in Me reside;
Whatever gift they offer true—
Leaf, flower, fruit, or tide
“Of water poured with faithful heart—
That gift I gladly own;
For pure of mind and full of love,
Their act becomes My throne.”
Faith sanctifies the simplest gesture. It is not the substance but the spirit that reaches the Lord. The pure in heart make every act a holy yajña.
The Offering of All Actions
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“Whate’er thou do, whate’er thou eat,
Whate’er thou give away;
Whate’er austerity thou keep,
Perform it as My play.
“Thus freed from bonds of good and ill,
With heart to renunciation won,
Thou shalt be released indeed,
And come to Me, My son.”
Every act becomes sacred when offered to the Divine. When no duty is performed for self, all work dissolves in freedom.
Equality of the Divine
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“I am the same to every soul—
None dear, none hated I;
But they who worship Me with love,
In them I ever lie.
“Though one of sinful life should turn,
Worshipping Me alone,
Count him righteous, Arjuna—
His aim is well begun.
“Soon his heart grows pure and clear,
His peace forever won;
Know, O son of Kuntī, this—
My devotee is never undone.”
The Lord’s compassion is unconditional. The sinner who sincerely turns to Him surpasses even the virtuous in destiny, for the power of love transforms all guilt into grace.
The Universal Refuge
Śrī Bhagavān said:
“Even they of birth called low—
Women, Vaiśyas, Śūdras too—
Seeking refuge in Me attain
The highest goal and true.
“What then of holy Brahmanas,
And saints whose hearts are pure?
Having reached this fleeting world,
Worship Me, endure.
“Fix thy mind on Me, My friend,
Be My servant, worship Me;
Bow down, take Me as refuge sure—
Thus shalt thou come to Me.”
No being is excluded from the Lord’s grace. All barriers of caste, birth, or sin vanish before devotion. He who bows with faith becomes one with Him.
Vaiśampāyana said:
Thus ended the Ninth Chapter, the Rāja-Vidyā Rāja-Guhya Yoga, the Yoga of Sovereign Knowledge and Sovereign Secret.
Here Śrī Bhagavān revealed the majesty of divine immanence—the Lord as Father, Mother, Witness, and Friend of all beings.
And Vaiśampāyana said to Janamejaya:
“He who understands this truth, that all acts and all hearts are but movements within the One, lives already freed, though still on earth; for in every breath he offers himself to the Lord of all worlds, Śrī Bhagavān, the dwelling of all.”
