Chapter 25
Chapter 25
The power erupting from my three-year-old sons holds every wolf frozen in terror. I force myself to stand despite the burning agony of Evander's mark, my legs shaking as I step into the circle where chaos reigns.
"Listen to me, all of you!" My voice carries across the grounds with strength I didn't know I possessed. "What you're witnessing isn't just children with unusual abilities. This is the Blackwood twin curse manifesting."
"Aria, don't—" Thorne tries to speak through his bloodied lips, but I continue.
"For three hundred years, every third generation of Blackwood Alphas produces twins cursed to kill each other," I announce, watching recognition dawn on the elder wolves' faces. "One twin must die for the other to become Supreme Alpha. The curse demands blood sacrifice."
"That's why Rowena tried to complete the ceremony," Elder Aldric breathes, his ancient voice carrying new understanding. "She was trying to control which twin survived."
"But there's another way," I continue, my eyes finding Evander where he stands bleeding but defiant. "The curse can be broken if both the Alpha and Luna renounce their titles completely. No more pack hierarchy, no more power—just ordinary wolves."
"You're suggesting Thorne give up being Alpha?" Evander laughs, the sound harsh and disbelieving despite his injuries. "That's your grand solution?"
"I'm not suggesting anything," I say firmly. "I'm telling you what needs to happen to save both boys. Thorne already agreed to renounce his title."
"Of course he did," Evander spits blood onto the ground. "He lost the challenge anyway. But you seem to forget something important—you bear my mark. You're Moonveil's Luna now, which means you need my agreement for this ritual."
"Then agree," I move closer to him, ignoring how the mark burns hotter with proximity. "Please, Evander. These are children we're talking about."
"Children who just attacked two Alphas," he gestures at the twins, who still crackle with dangerous energy. "Children who could destroy entire packs if left unchecked."
"They're my sons," Thorne says, dragging himself upright despite wounds that would kill a lesser wolf. "I'll give up everything to save them both. My title, my power, my territory—take it all."
"How noble," Evander's brown eyes turn cold as winter frost. "The great Thorne Blackwood, reduced to begging. But I refuse."
"What?" The word tears from my throat.
"You heard me," Evander straightens, his jaw set with cruel determination. "I refuse to participate in this ritual. You're my marked Luna, Aria. You'll honor that bond and return to Moonveil with me. The boys can come if they can be controlled, but I won't give up my position for another Alpha's cursed offspring."
"You selfish bastard," I snarl, my hands clenching into fists. "You'd let innocent children die rather than give up your precious power?"
"I'd preserve the natural order," he corrects, his voice carrying that particular arrogance I've grown to hate. "The curse exists for a reason. Maybe it's nature's way of ensuring only the strongest Blackwood survives."
"I'll give up my Alpha status," Thorne announces, his voice carrying despite his injuries. "Witnessed by three packs, I renounce my position as Alpha of Silverfang."
"That's not how it works," Elder Aldric interjects. "The ritual requires both parents to renounce simultaneously. Without the Luna's participation, it's meaningless."
"And this Luna belongs to me," Evander says with vicious satisfaction. "She'll do what I command, or suffer the consequences of defying her Alpha."
"I am not your property!" I scream, the mark burning so hot I smell my own flesh charring.
"Aren't you?" Evander steps closer, and the mark's pull becomes almost unbearable. "That mark says otherwise. You came to me, begged for my protection, took my mark willingly. Now you'll honor that choice."
"You're condemning my sons to death," Thorne growls, his body tensing despite his injuries. "I won't let that happen."
"You don't have a choice," Evander replies. "You lost the challenge. You have no authority here anymore."
Thorne lunges at Evander with desperate fury, his injuries forgotten in his rage. But he barely makes it two steps before collapsing, too much blood loss making him stumble.
That's when everything spirals into pure nightmare.
"You hurt Papa again!" Kael screams, his entire body erupting into red flames that don't burn his clothes but make the air around him shimmer with heat.
"The shadows want you gone," Finn says, his quiet voice somehow more terrifying than his brother's rage. "They say you're bad for Mama. Bad for everyone."
The twins' power surges beyond anything we've witnessed before. Finn's shadows shoot toward Evander like living spears, wrapping around his limbs and throat with crushing force. The Alpha of Moonveil chokes, his face turning purple as darkness literally tries to strangle him.
"Stop this!" I try to reach them, but Kael's fire forms a wall between us.
"No, Mama," Kael says, his green eyes now completely consumed by red. "He won't help save us. He wants Finn to die. I won't let him."
"Papa tried to protect us," Finn adds, his shadows tightening around Evander's throat. "But Papa's too hurt now. So we protect ourselves."
"Boys, please—" Thorne tries to stand but Kael's fire suddenly surrounds him too, not burning but holding him in place like chains made of flame.
"You were going to give us away," Kael accuses his father, tears streaming down his small face even as his power rages. "You were going to stop being Alpha and make us nobody."
"We don't want to be nobody," Finn says, his shadows now spreading across the ground toward other wolves who scramble backward in terror. "We want to be strong. The shadows say we can be strongest if we take everyone's power."
"That's the curse talking," I realize with horrible clarity. "It's using them, turning them against everyone who might stop it."
"Smart Mama," Finn says, but his voice sounds older, darker. "The shadows say you understand now. We don't need parents who make us weak. We only need each other."
"And the power," Kael adds, his fire growing hotter, making Thorne cry out in pain. "All the power these Alphas have should be ours."
My sons are turning into monsters before my eyes, the curse twisting their innocent souls into weapons. Evander gasps for air as Finn's shadows continue choking him, while Thorne burns in Kael's supernatural fire.
"If you kill them, you'll never forgive yourselves," I say, my voice breaking. "Please, my babies, I know you're scared and angry, but this isn't you. This is the curse trying to complete itself through you."
"Maybe we like the curse," Kael says, his child's voice carrying ancient malevolence. "Maybe we don't want to be saved."
"The shadows agree," Finn nods, his gray eyes now voids of pure darkness. "They say salvation is for the weak. We're not weak anymore."
The gathered wolves from three packs stand frozen in terror as two toddlers hold two of the most powerful Alphas captive with abilities that shouldn't exist. The curse has turned my babies into weapons, and I'm running out of time to save not just their lives, but their souls.
"Choose, Mama," the twins say in perfect unison, their voices harmonizing in a way that sends chills down my spine. "Choose which Alpha dies first, or we'll choose for you."
