Stealing the Alpha’s Heritage

Chapter 23

Chapter 23

POV Thorne

The morning sun cuts through my bedroom window, illuminating Aria's sleeping form beside me. Her dark hair spreads across my pillow like spilled ink, and Evander's mark glows faintly on her neck—a cruel reminder that last night changes nothing legally.

"You're staring," she murmurs without opening her eyes.

"Hard not to when you're in my bed again." I trace a finger along her bare shoulder, careful to avoid the mark. "Three years I've imagined this."

"This doesn't fix us, Thorne." She sits up, pulling the sheet around herself. "We agreed to break the curse, not resurrect our relationship."

"Right. Business arrangement." The words taste like ash. "Speaking of which, we need to discuss the logistics. You're technically Moonveil's Luna now. Evander's mark gives him legal claim."

"I know what it gives him." She touches the mark, wincing. "It burns constantly, calling me back to him."

"The challenge is tomorrow." I stand, pulling on yesterday's clothes. "If I win, I can override his mark with mine. If he wins—"

"He takes me and the boys back to Moonveil." She finishes, her voice hollow. "Either way, someone owns me."

"Unless we break the curse first." I move to my desk, pulling out the journal she found. "If we renounce our titles before the challenge, there's nothing to fight over."

"You'd really give up being Alpha?" She studies my face, searching for deception. "Your entire identity is wrapped up in that power."

"My entire identity used to be wrapped up in you." The admission escapes before I can stop it. "Power was just what I used to fill that void."

A knock interrupts whatever she might have said. Jules enters, his expression grim.

"Alpha, the twins are in the training yard." His eyes flick between us, taking in Aria's presence but saying nothing. "They're... you need to see this."

We dress quickly and follow Jules through the pack house. The sound reaches us before we see them—metal clashing against metal, punctuated by children's voices raised in anger.

"Take it back!" Kael's voice carries across the yard.

"I'm just telling the truth!" Finn responds, his usually quiet voice sharp with fury.

We round the corner to find our three-year-old sons circling each other with training swords nearly as tall as they are. Kael's eyes burn constant red now, while shadows writhe around Finn like living things.

"Boys, stop!" Aria rushes forward, but I catch her arm.

"Wait. Watch." Something in their movements catches my attention—this isn't random flailing.

Kael lunges with perfect form, his small body moving with the grace of a seasoned warrior. Finn deflects with shadows that solidify into shields, his counter-strike guided by whispers only he can hear.

"You're getting stronger because I'm getting weaker!" Finn swings his sword with surprising force. "The shadows told me—you're stealing my strength!"

"I'm not stealing anything!" Kael parries, his red eyes blazing brighter. "You're just jealous because Papa trains me more!"

"He trains you more because you're the one who gets to live!" Finn's shadows surge forward, knocking Kael off his feet. "Everyone knows it! Grandmother knew it! That's why she tried to—"

"ENOUGH!" My voice carries enough Alpha command to freeze them both.

The swords clatter from their small hands. Kael's eyes fade to green while Finn's shadows retreat, leaving two frightened children staring at us.

"Papa?" Kael's voice trembles. "Mama? Why does Mama smell different?"

Aria freezes beside me. Of course they'd notice—their senses are heightening with the curse. They can smell both my scent and Evander's mark on their mother.

"Mama, you smell like Papa again," Finn says quietly, his gray eyes too knowing. "But the other smell is still there. The shadows say you're torn between two worlds."

"Come here, both of you." Aria drops to her knees, opening her arms. They run to her, their earlier violence forgotten in their need for maternal comfort.

"Why were you fighting?" she asks, pulling them close.

"Finn said I'm going to kill him," Kael whispers against her shoulder. "He said the curse means only one of us gets to grow up."

"That's what the shadows keep showing me," Finn adds, his small body trembling. "They show me Kael standing over my body, crying but unable to stop."

"That's not going to happen." Aria's voice cracks. "Papa and I won't let it happen."

"But Grandmother said—"

"Grandmother was wrong." I kneel beside them, pulling all three into my arms. "Your mother and I found another way. A way where you both live."

"Really?" Kael pulls back, studying my face for lies.

"Really. But it means things will change. Big changes for our whole pack."

"What kind of changes?" Finn asks, those unsettling gray eyes seeing too much.

"The kind where Papa won't be Alpha anymore." The words feel strange on my tongue. "Where we become a normal family."

"You'd give up being Alpha for us?" Kael's voice carries wonder.

"I'd give up everything for you both." I mean every word.

"But there's something else happening tomorrow," Aria says carefully. "Another Alpha is coming to challenge Papa."

"The one whose smell is on you," Finn states rather than asks. "The shadows say he marked you to own you."

"It's complicated, baby—"

"No, it's not." Finn stands, his small face serious. "He wants Mama and he wants us. But we don't want him."

"We want to stay here," Kael adds, moving to stand beside his brother. "Together. All of us."

I exchange a look with Aria over their heads. The solution crystallizes in my mind, clear and brutal in its simplicity.

"Get them inside," I tell her quietly. "I need to make arrangements."

"Thorne, what are you planning?" She recognizes the look in my eyes.

"I'm going to lose tomorrow." The decision feels right, settling into my bones like truth. "I'll throw the challenge, let Evander think he's won. Then when he's feeling victorious, we'll propose the curse-breaking ritual. He'll have custody, but if we both renounce our titles, there's nothing for him to have custody of."

"You'd deliberately lose? Your pride—"

"My pride is worthless if it costs me my sons." I stand, helping her to her feet. "Besides, Evander's arrogant enough to believe he beat me fairly. He'll be so focused on his victory, he won't see the real game."

"Papa, the shadows are laughing," Finn says suddenly, his eyes unfocused. "They say the proud wolf doesn't know he's already lost."

"What do you mean?" Aria asks, but Finn doesn't answer, lost in whatever visions haunt him.

"Take them inside," I repeat, already moving toward my office. "I have preparations to make."

"Thorne." Aria catches my hand, squeezing once. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet." I squeeze back before letting go. "This only works if Evander agrees to the ritual. If he refuses—"

"He won't refuse." Her hand goes to the mark on her neck. "He's too obsessed with owning me to realize he'll be owning nothing."

I watch them walk away—my family, broken and strange and cursed, but still mine. Tomorrow I'll let another Alpha defeat me in front of my entire pack. I'll surrender my pride, my reputation, everything I've built.

But if it saves my sons, if it keeps my family together, then I'll lose a thousand challenges.

"Jules," I call, knowing he's hovering nearby. "Gather the pack elders. I have an announcement to make."

"Alpha?"

"Just do it." I stare out the window at the training yard where my sons' swords still lie abandoned. "And Jules? Whatever happens tomorrow, whatever you see, don't interfere."
