Chapter 99: All Set, Heading to the Mines
Riding his bike into Pelican Town, Leon immediately spotted the Pelican Town Clinic beside Pierre’s General Store. He parked his bike and stepped inside, where he saw Maru in a nurse’s uniform behind the counter.
“Hello, are you here for a scheduled check-up? Hmm? Oh, it’s you, Mr. Leon.”
Maru had instinctively given her usual greeting when the door opened, but quickly corrected herself when she recognized Leon.
“Hello, Miss Maru. This is our second time meeting. I didn’t expect you to work here.” Leon smiled at her. Whatever else could be said, that nurse’s uniform suited her perfectly. Even though she was Black, her features were striking, and her temperament was exceptional. Calling her a black pearl beauty wouldn’t be an exaggeration.
“I forgot to mention it during our last dinner together. But honestly, I didn’t want to tell you. I’d be happy to run into you outside, but in the clinic? I’d rather not see you here.” Maru explained with a smile.
“I understand what you mean. If you’re not sick or hurt, who would want to come to the hospital?” Leon nodded in agreement.
“So, are you feeling unwell? I can call Doctor Harvey for you.” Maru gave him a once-over. His complexion was rosy, and his expression relaxed—he didn’t look like someone suffering from illness.
“I’m just here to buy some emergency supplies—bandages, disinfectant, painkillers, things like that.” Leon explained.
“As long as you’re fine. We sell those here, come this way.” Maru beckoned him over, then pulled out a medical kit and opened it.
“This is the home version of our all-purpose medical kit. It has everything you mentioned, plus cotton swabs, adhesive bandages, a thermometer, and even adrenaline for emergencies. Does this work for you?”“This will do.” Leon gave the contents a quick glance and decided on the spot. The kit had enough to handle minor injuries. As for major wounds? You couldn’t expect someone with only basic first aid knowledge to perform surgery on themselves in the wilderness. If there was a serious injury, the smart move was to rely on Forest Magic to escape, then get someone to rush you to the hospital.
“This kit is 150G.” Maru gave him the price when she saw he had no objections.
Leon didn’t haggle. He paid, took the kit in hand, and left the clinic.
“Leaving in such a hurry… farm life must be busy,” Maru murmured with a hint of disappointment as she watched him go.
She had hoped to chat with him a bit. After all, Leon ran a real farm, and she might have learned something useful about local crops to aid her biological research.
After stepping out of the clinic, Leon tossed the medical kit into his System Backpack—it was heavy, too much for a regular backpack. Then he headed straight for Pierre’s General Store. Not to shop from Pierre, but to find Gus.
Sure enough, just outside the glass doors, Leon spotted Gus picking up supplies for the saloon kitchen. Leon stepped inside.
“Gus, are you done shopping?”
“All set. Pierre’s folks will deliver the rest to me. What about you, here to buy something?” Gus greeted him with a smile.
“Not exactly. I wanted to order some portable, filling food—like bread.” Leon explained.
“Ah, but I haven’t started baking yet. If it’s bread, I’d have to make it fresh. If you can wait, I’ll head back and get started right away.” Gus said apologetically.
“In that case, I won’t trouble you. I don’t have much time to wait for fresh bread. Sorry to bother you.” Leon said, a little disappointed.
“No worries. But next time, let me know in advance. I’ll have the freshest, most delicious food ready for you.” Gus promised, patting Leon on the shoulder. Then he added, “If you don’t care about taste and just need emergency rations, you can try Joja Mart. They’ve got pre-packaged bread. It’s awful, but it’ll fill you up.”
“Good suggestion. Thanks, Gus. If you’re still open when I get back tonight, I’ll drop by your saloon.” With that, Leon said goodbye and pedaled off toward Joja Mart.
“Rushing around like that… is he heading out on a trip?” Gus muttered as he watched him go.
…
“Oh, Mr. Leon, long time no see. Welcome to Joja Mart.”
As soon as Leon entered Joja Mart, Morris spotted him. Morris greeted him warmly—after all, they were former colleagues, and Leon was the only farmer in Stardew Valley.
If Morris knew that Leon had been the one to clue Lewis in on Joja Corporation’s illegal mining in the northern foothills—leading Lewis to take action against them—Leon doubted Morris would be so friendly.
Of course, Leon had no intention of telling him.
“Mr. Morris, hello. I’m just here to buy a few things.” Leon gave him a polite nod before heading for the shelves.
He grabbed ten ham sandwiches and a case of bottled water, then brought them to the front to pay.
At checkout, Morris came over again. “I saw you came by bike. Would you like me to have these delivered to your farm? We have delivery staff—though there is a fee.”
“Don’t try to sell me a paid service. I can carry this with one hand.” Leon shot him a glance. He had little patience for this profit-driven businessman.
Still smiling, Morris didn’t take offense. He even waved goodbye when Leon left.
“A capable man… shame he’s with Joja Mart.” Leon muttered, single-handedly balancing his bike and the 16-bottle case of water. When no one was around, he slipped the water into his System Backpack.
As for the bread, it was light enough to go in his regular backpack.
“All set. Time to head into the mines. Let’s hope I don’t end up bleeding out on my first run—hospital bills aren’t cheap.”
