Chapter 212: The Fortune-Bringing Child?
After finishing his talk with the mermaid young lady, Leon and Willy Gus paddled the kayak to the fishing boat’s side. The two climbed aboard first, and only then did Leon get on. As soon as he hauled the kayak onto the deck and deflated it, he heard Willy’s roar.
“Damn it! The engine’s fine, but the boat won’t move.”
“Figures. Whoever’s behind this doesn’t mean well.” Leon frowned.
For the fishing boat to break down now of all times—it was too much of a coincidence. Anyone with half a brain would know it was sabotage.
“Mermaid young lady, could you check what’s going on under the hull for me?” Leon leaned over the side and called into the sea.
“The propeller at the bottom’s been shredded,” she replied after surfacing.
“Well, we’re stuck out at sea then.” Leon shrugged, then turned to Willy. “Can you call for the maritime rescue team? I remember your wheelhouse has a radio.”
“I’ll give it a shot.” Willy disappeared into the wheelhouse.
Meanwhile, Leon asked the mermaid, “Can you see where that giant python is right now?”
“It’s not nearby. We’ll need to spread out to search,” she said.“If you split up, you’ll be in danger. Stay close for now. If it dared to destroy the propeller, it wasn’t planning on letting us go. Your presence is probably the only reason it hasn’t attacked yet. Don’t give it the chance to pick someone off.” Leon quietly pulled out his Galaxy Watermelon Knife.
“I could contact my people and get a whale to tow your boat,” she suggested.
“How long would that take?”
“Over half an hour. This place is far from our gathering grounds, and whales are too big to teleport.”
“No rush. As long as we can leave this area, it’s fine,” Leon said. He wasn’t in a hurry to get back.
“Then we’ll stay on guard.” She dove back beneath the waves.
Leon found Willy, who was still calling repeatedly over the radio. But there was no response—no passing vessels seemed to be in the area.
“Forget it, Willy. The mermaids will send a whale to tow us.” Leon stepped in to calm him before his frustration boiled over.
“Really? That’s a relief.” Willy exhaled and patted Leon’s shoulder. “I never thought you had such good ties with the mermaids.”
“Helped them before. Just mutual assistance.” Leon wasn’t sure if he could cash in this favor again, but he didn’t regret it—Willy and Gus’s safety came first.
“So it’s that sea serpent after us?” Willy eyed the weapon in Leon’s hand.
“Yeah.” Leon nodded.
“The ocean’s getting more dangerous these days. Back then, storms and reefs were the worst threats—not monsters,” Willy said with a sigh.
“Normally, a voyage wouldn’t run into this. We’re just unlucky,” Leon replied, though doubts lingered in his mind.
Why had the giant python first shown itself to deliver bones, only to later sabotage the boat? And why call itself a Child of the Wilds? Brother Bear had never mentioned it, nor had Rasmodius, who loved explaining these things.
Too many questions and too few answers. The python clearly didn’t plan to talk to him—otherwise Leon might have gleaned more.
While they waited, Leon stayed alert. Willy kept trying the radio, hoping for passing ships as backup. Gus, meanwhile, had collapsed the moment they got aboard—seasickness hit him just as hard as any lurking monster.
“It’s coming.”
From the bow, Leon heard the mermaid’s warning. He followed her gaze.
To port, beneath the sunlit waves, a long black shadow sliced toward them.
Leon pulled out the Merman Algae. If anything went wrong, he’d swallow it, leap overboard, and fight.
The four mermaids he’d called earlier hovered around the boat, eyes locked on the oncoming shadow. Their Neptune Greatswords flashed blindingly in the sunlight.
Just before it reached the boat, the shadow halted, rising to reveal a massive, gem-like head ten meters away.
“Child of Nature, I told you to leave my territory.”
Seeing Leon on the bow, the giant python spoke first.
“I’d like to, but the boat’s propeller’s been destroyed,” Leon shot back.
“Need my help?” the python asked.
“Oh? You want to help? I thought you’d be enjoying your seawater bath,” Leon said with a smirk.
“I just don’t want you here. If you want my help, the mermaids leave first. I don’t trust them near me,” it said, tongue flicking.
“No need. A lot of mermaid warriors will be here soon with a whale to tow us. We’ll be gone soon enough,” Leon said.
He saw the python’s pupils contract slightly before it replied, “Fine. By the way, since you took that poor fool’s bones, do you want his belongings?”
“What do you mean?” Leon asked, intrigued.
“They’re in my stomach. If you want them, I can cough them up. Gold coins here attract pirates and adventurers. I don’t want to be disturbed, so it’s best you take them away.”
“Of course I want them. Come on over.” Leon grinned and nodded.
