Chapter 62: Apex Predator
Chapter 62: Apex Predator
Verso gripped the shaft of his stone spear tightly as he looked ahead.
The yellow radiance from the golems’ runes flickered against the damp walls of cavern giving the place a more unique look than the previous cove.
’One of you, run in first.’ He sent a mental command to the golem leading the front.
The seven foot tall stone summon immediately surged forward, its runes flaring into a brilliant, blinding yellow as it activated Energized Rush.
It thundered deeper into the cave, its heavy footsteps sending vibrations that alerted every nearby creatures of their presence.
’Not like I was going to get a surprise hit on it anyway.’
Verso knew that surprising an Elite Creature was not possible with his current stats so he did not bother trying.
As the golem disappeared into the corner, the haunting ethereal humming that had been vibrating through the air cut off.
The silence which followed it was even more terrifying, as it signified that the Siren had noticed them.
’The golem must have reached it.’
Sensing the sudden spike in danger, Verso did not wait for the crashing sound of the Siren’s attack as he pulled both of his golems back into his summoning space.
Just then, a massive heavy thud shook the entire cavern which made dust rain down from the ceiling and the ground below Verso shake.
’I was able to pull it back just in time.’ Verso smiled, he had made the perfect choice and saved his golems from being wasted.
He slowly walked towards the corner while trying to maintain his silence.
As he reached it, he turned to look and saw the cavern open into a massive hollowed out space just like the one they had been in at the main Island.
A similar lake sat at the center of the space, its water looking like a pool of spilled ink.
But the main thing that stood out in the room was the Siren which laid on the rocky edge of the lake. It was identical to the one that Moon had killed.
Just as he looked at it directly, the creature sensed his presence, turning its eyeless head toward him.
’That was a little too fast.’
Then, it opened the Siren opened its maw wide as a tune he had not heard before erupted from the creature’s mouth.
It was not like the haunting melody from before, instead this one was more high pitched and for some reason it felt like sound bypassed his ear’s completely.
’What-’ Suddenly Verso felt a pull on his consciousness.
Verso’s world instantly tilted as a strange, numbing sensation washed over his limbs, starting at his fingertips and racing toward his heart.
It was as if his nervous system had been hijacked. He could see his surroundings with perfect clarity but he could no longer move his body.
Just then, against his will, his right leg lifted. And then his left.
He began to walk forward, his movements stiff and jerky, like a marionette being pulled by invisible strings.
’!!!’
Panic spread across his mind. He tried to scream, to trigger a summon, to even just fall over but his body completely ignored him.
He was marching straight toward the Siren, which was now slamming its powerful, clawed hands onto the ground, crawling toward him with a hunch.
’Fuck, what do I do-’
Just as the Siren’s fish like stench hit his nose, Verso felt a violent pull on the back of his hoodie. He was jerked backward as he slammed onto the ground.
A dark, tattered cloak brushed past his face. Little Bone stepped over him, the massive black skeleton’s presence made him feel a little more secure.
But still, Verso’s body had not stopped moving, even when he was lying on his back.
He was still trying to move toward the Siren by crawling.
Little Bone looked down at him, its skull tilting to the side. The skeleton gave a slow shake of its head as if disappointed by the fact that its master was such a disaster.
With a swift motion, Little Bone reached down and snatched the stone spear out of Verso’s frozen hand.
The skeleton pulled its arm back and launched the spear with the force of a ballista towards the Siren’s open maw.
As the spear impaled the squirming teeth and pinned the creature’s throat. The ethereal tune died instantly.
Verso gasped out loud as he felt himself regain control over his body.
He looked up to see the Siren let out a deafening roar of anger as it clawed at its own face, ripping the spear out and throwing it aside.
The beast had realized that its ability had been ineffective, so it slammed its hands onto the rocky shore, pushed its powerful tail off the ground and launched itself back into the dark lake.
"No way I’m letting you get away without settling the score!" Verso shouted in anger.
Above the center of the lake, a massive portal tore open and from the depths of the rift, a long, serpent shadow emerged.
The new Elite summon of his crashed into the lake, its blue scales shimmering with a dangerous, metallic luster.
The serpent did not even pause for a second before it opened its massive jaw wide to reveal rows of fangs that made the Siren’s teeth look like toothpicks.
The lake’s surface became a chaotic violent mess as a massive vortex formed at the center and within seconds, the dark color of the lake began to turn a murky red.
’I can’t see what’s going on.’
Verso scrambled to his feet and ran toward the left edge of the lake, Little Bone keeping pace beside him.
As he reached a good vantage point, he saw a sudden massive surge in the water.
The Sea Serpent’s tail breached the surface, coiling like a spring before swinging with enough force to create a tidal wave.
The impact sounded like a cannon blast as the Serpent launched the Siren out of the water, its body skip skimming across the surface before moving toward Verso.
"This was not what I asked for!" Verso yelled, his eyes widening as several hundred pounds of sea monster meat flew at him.
He pushed himself to his limits and picked up pace, diving to the side of the space.
The Siren slammed into the rocky ground a few meters away with a wet, heavy crunch.
The Siren’s body was completely mangled. Its tail was snapped in half, its scaled skin was shredded and its ribcage had collapsed.
It tried to twitch one last time but only a pathetic gurgle escaped its throat before its head fell back and went limp.
A soft mechanical chime sounded in Verso’s ear.
