Chapter 157: When Control Becomes Art
Chapter 157: When Control Becomes Art
Inside the chamber, Arthur stood calmly in the center.
He rolled his neck once.
Then took a slow breath.
His eyes closed.
The machine activated.
A sharp mechanical sound echoed as the first launch port opened.
A stone projectile shot forward at frightening speed.
Then another.
And another.
They came from different directions.
Different angles.
All aimed straight at him.
The older explorer watching through the window felt his heart jump.
"That’s too fast!"
Even he had never trained at max level before.
The speed alone was enough to break bones if someone reacted late.
But Arthur didn’t move.
Not even a step.
His breathing remained slow and calm.
Then something changed.
It wasn’t obvious at first.
But the air around him shifted slightly.
Arthur’s eyes opened.
"Vector Sovereignty".
The moment the skill activated, the projectiles flying toward him... stopped.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
Frozen midair just inches away from his body.
The older explorer blinked.
"What...?"
The stones hung there.
As if the world itself had paused.
Arthur raised one hand slowly.
The stones moved.
Not falling.
Not dropping.
Moving exactly where his hand guided them.
The older explorer’s mouth slowly opened.
"What kind of... control is that?"
Arthur turned his wrist slightly.
The projectiles shifted again.
Their direction bent like invisible strings pulled them through space.
Arthur watched them with quiet interest.
"So this is how it feels."
His grin spread slowly.
The stones suddenly shot away from him.
Slamming into the opposite wall with explosive force.
The machine fired another volley instantly.
Arthur stepped forward this time.
The projectiles froze again.
Then spun around him like orbiting fragments caught in his gravity.
Outside the room, the older explorer had been holding his breath without realizing.
Finally, he exhaled slowly.
"...What the hell am I looking at?"
The max setting was supposed to overwhelm explorers.
Even veterans struggled with it.
But that young man inside...
He wasn’t struggling.
He was playing.
The projectiles moved like obedient soldiers under his command.
Arthur turned slightly, guiding them with small movements of his hands.
His expression wasn’t focused yet relaxed.
Almost amused even.
The older explorer whispered under his breath.
"That’s not defense."
His eyes widened as another volley froze in the air.
"That’s control."
Inside the chamber, Arthur finally laughed quietly.
"Oh... this is fun."
And soon he began to notice the reaction outside the glass.
Even without looking directly, he could feel it.
The quiet gasps. The shifting shadows of people moving closer to the viewing panels. Someone whispering too loudly before another person shushed them.
A smirk slowly formed on his lips.
They think this is fast?
The machine was set to maximum. To most bronze explorers that meant chaos. Projectiles from different angles, different speeds, unpredictable timing.
But compared to what he faced yesterday...
Arthur shook his head slightly.
"This is nothing."
The long range variant ogre had thrown stones like a living catapult. Those rocks tore through the air with enough force to crush a man flat.
Compared to that?
These training projectiles felt slow.
Arthur lifted his hand slightly and the next stone froze mid flight.
Another came from the left.
It stopped too.
Then a third from behind.
The machine kept firing but the results stayed the same.
Every projectile that entered his range lost its freedom.
Arthur moved his fingers slightly and the stones shifted direction like obedient birds circling their handler.
Outside the room the older explorer leaned closer to the glass.
His shield still hung loosely from one arm but he had completely forgotten about leaving.
"What kind of skill is that..."
Inside the chamber Arthur exhaled slowly.
The smirk faded into focus.
This little show had happened almost by accident. Instinct had taken over when the machine started firing and the skill responded naturally.
Still... that wasn’t why he came here.
He came to train.
The theory behind the skill was clear in his mind. He had read the description and felt the way it moved through his mana.
But theory meant nothing until the body understood it.
And that only came through practice.
The machine fired again.
This time Arthur didn’t freeze everything.
He stepped to the side and let the first stone pass him.
The second one slowed slightly but didn’t stop completely.
The third curved away from his shoulder and smashed harmlessly against the floor.
Arthur’s eyes sharpened.
Better.
He stretched his hand forward.
A cluster of stones hung in the air around him.
Then he flicked his wrist.
They shot sideways and crashed into the far wall.
The machine answered with another wave.
Now the room filled with motion.
Stones flew from above, from the sides, from hidden slots in the walls.
To the people outside it looked like chaos.
To Arthur it felt like a dance.
He turned slightly and the projectiles bent with him.
One dropped harmlessly to the ground.
Another changed direction and collided with a second stone.
Two more spun around his back before slamming into the ceiling.
Arthur moved casually through the storm.
Sometimes he stopped a projectile completely.
Sometimes he nudged it just enough to miss.
Other times he sent them flying away like he was swatting insects.
The machine grew louder as it struggled to keep up.
Outside the room the older explorer whispered under his breath.
"He’s not even sweating..."
Another bronze explorer stepped beside him.
"What’s going on in there?"
The older man pointed.
"You tell me."
The newcomer stared through the glass.
Inside, Arthur stood almost lazily in the center of the chamber.
No shield.
No sword.
Not even a defensive stance.
Yet the projectiles refused to touch him.
They moved around him as if an invisible force ruled the space.
The younger explorer blinked.
"Is he... dodging?"
The older man shook his head slowly.
"No."
Another stone curved away from Arthur’s shoulder and slammed into the wall.
"He’s controlling them."
The younger explorer frowned.
"That doesn’t make sense."
"I know."
Inside the chamber Arthur began experimenting more boldly.
Instead of simply stopping the stones he began redirecting them even more.
