Chapter 89: Foolish Ambush
Chapter 89: Foolish Ambush
Clark and Maria were already certain that they wouldn't find much in terms of more horned rabbits. They searched the area after storing away the four they had found. They already felt lucky that they had found one that they had not even needed to hunt.
Unfortunately, the system had given Clark the task to hunt five. That left him with a total of three out of five hunted even though he had four bodies. There was still motivation to find more.
"You know I am not sleeping out here. There are field foxes that come out at night. I am not ready to fight at night and you don't have Devi." Maria put her foot down when she saw that the sun was slowly descending. If they were to remain outside in the night she wouldn't b able to promise safety in the least.
"I agree. I am not ready to be out in any wilds at night. If the worst happens and we have to run, they might not open the gates to avoid beasts getting in to the city and hurting others." Clark respected the rules of the city guards.
They would put the safety of the city over even their patrols of the outside walls. Many heroic tales had been told of dangerous beasts trying to get in only to be stopped while the guards lowered the gates.
"Then shouldn't we head back toward the gates?" Maria wasn't sure how much longer they should risk being out. However, she was willing to give it a little more time to see if they could face another horned rabbit. She had liked the challenge against a real beast.
"We can move back slowly and see what we can see." Clark took this as a chance to hunt silently. He knew that this was a great way to improve footwork. His ghostly steps were fast, but they were not silent. If he could cut down on wasted movement and noise he would be a much better fighter.
"That's fine. I think the way I am learning to move is best for sneaking." This also made sense. Since Maria was replicating the fluid and floaty movements of Lit, she would definitely excel at silent sneaking.
Clark was different. He had a physical body whereas Devi did not. The movements that he had based his movements on were different. He had to change them and make them his own to better replicate and advance the technique overall. If he had copied Crim, silence would definitely not be an option. Crim was too brutal and loud for sneaking.
Hence another reason why the taming space was a massive advantage.
"That looks promising." Maria was faster than Clark to spot the disruption in the grass ahead of them. They had been moving very carefully only to find that they had nearly walked within ten feet of what seemed to be a horned rabbit hiding.
"Perfect, this time we can try to ambush." Clark's whisper was silent enough that nothing in the area was disturbed. Maria could barely hear him but had the same thought process. It was better to get the surprise on the rabbit than for the rabbit to surprise them.
While Clark could barely see the brown fur of the horned rabbit, he was sure that it would be a good target. He snuck up while Maria snuck up slightly to the side. They were both going to attack at once. It was even better that Maria had covered the tip of Clark's spear in Lit's numbing poison.
With a deep breath and a hard leap, Clark used the falling moon pierce to attack the rabbit. When he did he got a full glimpse of what he was attacking.
Yes it was a horned rabbit. However, he had not realized that the ground was not only different but indented. The depression in the ground was large enough for a horned rabbit to use as a small hiding nest. It also made the horned rabbit inside the depression seem smaller from any other angle than the one that Clark was coming from.
'Mother horned rabbit- uncommon
The mother horned rabbit is unique for one reason. It is a horned rabbit able to lay eggs that other horned rabbits can hatch out of. The only issue is the scents released by the mother cause all other horned rabbits male or female in the area to become excessively aggressive. They will attack with extreme violence when threatened. The best way to tame…'
Clark didn't falter. He pushed his spear deep in to the hind leg of the mother horned rabbit. The result was a blood curdling squeal. Immediately, Clark wrenched the spear from the mother rabbit's leg while Maria did the same to her dagger which had struck the other leg.
When the mother horned rabbit stood, it wasn't surprising that it was limping. However, that was mostly because of the poison from Lit. this would give them an advantage, however small it was. "If we run we will get stabbed in the back by its horn. We have to dodge and fight!" Clark didn't hesitate to call out to Maria who looked just as stunned as he was.
The two didn't hold back. The horned rabbit immediately raised its front paws showing the digging claws it had. With a single swipe, Clark was forced to jump a roll. The ground was scratched out along with a large clump of grass. Clark was sure that it would have killed him on the spot. "It's not weak!"
The warning encouraged Maria to also jump out of the way when the mother rabbit reared up again. This left Clark the perfect chance to use the crescent moon slash to do even more damage to the hind legs. The goal he had made up his mind on was to simply stop it from moving.
The next squeal was paired with the mother horned rabbit trying to crouch and charge forward, unlucky for it, Clark knew the attack. As soon as it charged forward, he jumped out of the way leaving his spear propped up on the ground.
The spear was driven deep in to the chest of the mother horned rabbit due to its own jump. Instead of impaling its opponent, it had been impaled. The sudden fear and panic caused the mother horned rabbit to flail about.
The pain that clouded its vision allowed Both Maria and Clark to brandish their weapons. Maria used her daggers to slash six times at the side of the mother horned rabbit. Its reaction was to swipe toward her with all its strength. The attack proved to be worse for the rabbit though.
With a simple backstep, Maria dodged the mother rabbit's attack. The mother rabbit in turn caused the spear in its body to sink deeper. This caused the mother rabbit to falter again which allowed Clark the perfect timing to attack.
Adding to the first spear left within the mother rabbit, Clark used all his strength to charge and use the falling moon pierce again. This time he aimed for the soft belly of the horned rabbit. He felt the spear plunge in and through it as if he was attacking butter. He had found the weak spot of the mother horned rabbit.
