Chapter 562: Survival Tools
Chapter 562: Survival Tools
Spears made of branches and rock, axes, knives with handles made of wrapped vines, and a few other odds and ends tools were made throughout the night. The group took turns learning and sleeping from one another.
One though that Clark was surprised and had totally missed though was another very basic tool or item that they would need. "Nails should have been the first thing you thought of. You said we might need to barricade a cave if we are in the deep wilderness. So making nails from wood is easy and normal." Ralph had been the one to rep-rimand the entire group about this.
He had shown them all the necessary whittling skills while explaining that making them from metal was a similar act that used heat to soften metal before cutting it in particular ways. It was interesting to hear the differences and the similarities between the wood and the metal as mediums for their crafting.
But when they were all finished making ,many of these wooden nails just to have the skill down pat, Ralph looked at them and said that they were better kindling for fires. He then made ten in the time it took Clark to make one. This was the first small battle that Ralph had won.
Regardless, Clark was certain that the work was worth it. He had seen the techniques that Ralph had learned while trying to get to a level where he could forge metal. The basics of making handles, wrappings, and grips was something every blacksmith would learn first. A rite of passage.
'Wooden nail- common
The wooden nail is a basic wooden carving for holding wooden objects together. They are treated with heat and sap to ensure their toughness. They will be able to be warmed and hammered in to softer woods so that they are held in place or together.
Stone knife- uncommon
This knife is made of a specific rock that when shattered produces multiple shards with razor edges. It is wrapped with vines and sap to be able to have a safe and controlled grip. It may not be the most durable knife but it is valuable to those in survival situations. It can be used easily due to the care taken when creating it.
Wooden bowl- common…
Wooden fork….
Small stone ax…'
There were multiple other items but these were some notable items that Clark felt were more valuable. However, he was surprised to find that he still didn't have a quest completion notification until he had braided a basic vine rope.
'Vine rope- uncommon
The vine rope is used as any other rope. However, it has been treated with hot tree sap within the center of each braid. This allows for tougher durability and also allows the vines to better change shape in different temperatures. It is not the best rope, but it is very useful.
It is recommended that this is used sooner than later because the more that the vines dry out, the more brittle it might be.'
When Clark finished a ten foot section of vine rope the way that Grace and Ralph had shown him, the system had finally appeared to accept that he had learned enough. But Clark was a little more interested in what might be the next step in the chain quest. He felt like he had ended up in some wilderness classroom instead of the real wilderness.
'Chain quest, Wilderness survival (second Link)
Requirement: build multiple tools that will be used as your every day tools. Ensure that they have multiple uses.
Reward: survival gotcha ticket, slight improvement to analysis based on survival aspects.'
'Survival gotcha is spinning…'
Clark watched as it did spin. He was holding his breath for something good since he had been waiting for this.
'Ideal torch blueprint- rare'
The ideal torch for any place is important, but when Clark saw the small book that was a blueprint, he was confused. That was until he read the full description of the item using the improved survival analysis.
'Ideal torch blueprint- rare
This is the ideal torch blueprint. It has multiple potential materials for each part. Multiple herbs can be added depending on the need. The wood or handles can be exchanged or even added to so that it is easier to carry.
Materials are listed on each step, however, the crafting method is troublesome for certain materials depending on the skill of the one following the blueprint. It is highly recommended to practice this blueprint with lesser materials until steps are better learned. However, the material can be….'
It was a lot. But when Clark looked down at the long analysis, he saw something very useful. The change in the analysis had highlighted a section for him to read.
'The mosquito bane herb is a very common herb that grows in any large forest or jungle depending on the humidity. It is best to find it after rain since it will be releasing oils that can be burned to repel all insects and bug type beasts.. It is very effective and the herb can be dried in jars or made in to repellent potions.'
This was the survival analysis bonus for sure. Clark could tell that this was highlighted because it would be the ideal herb to find to make the torches for nighttime. But it would also allow them to try and make an insect repellent potion or just have the herbs in case.
While this was at first an odd thing to get, it made Clark realize that this was actually an incredible bit of information. Getting some form of blueprint like this was apparently only rare. What if he got others? What if he got one for survival or for weapons that was ultra rare? What of it was a legendary blueprint? Could he make another weapon like the black lightning spear?
'Chain quest- survival (third link)
Food, water, safety.
Requirement: hunt a beast that can be used to make preserved food, find water to purify and store, find a place that can be used as a temporary shelter or camp. This must be completed within a single twenty four hour period.
Rewards: 1 survival gotcha ticket, five basic gotcha tickets, book of prints.'
This new link was more than what Clark expected. He imagined that something would appear that was related to finding food and water, but the shelter addition was interesting. It made him change the way that he thought.
Finding a safe place to camp was not as easy as it appeared. Right now they were lucky that the elder treant hadn't pushed them to leave. It it had done so, he might not have been able to do much when it came to making tools and moving forward with quests. Therefore, he realized that the time limit would be the real challenge.
The quest line would end if he did not find food, water, and shelter in a single day. That meant that they would have to be on the move to a different area where they could hunt and get water. Then they would have to be lucky enough to scout out the best camping spot within this forest before they began to approach the jungle.
This all assumed that the beasts they found were even edible or able to be defeated by their group. It also assumed that they would be able to safely find a water source of any kind within this forest. These things were harder than it sounded. Some beasts didn't have energies in their body that could be consumed by them at all.
It was only more worrying when he relaxed that there was a fixed amount of knowledge that they had. The map was not detailed enough to with the places that monsters frequented or where they migrated. Therefore, they would have to be more careful with how they moved.
How they found places to travel and scout when they left the older trails that would not lead them to the deeper wilderness called the violent jungle.
"It's about time we get moving, the sun is up and we can see better." Brad was clearly annoyed by the wood fairies that had been using him as a place to rest. There was also a slight shiver in the possessed armaments acting as his armor too. It was clearly unhappy to be sat on by these smaller mischievous beasts.
but they were stronger than they looked so they couldn't do anything to the wood fairies.
"It's as good a time as any. We should hunt for some food and look for water as we go. Then we will have a second camp to find. I don't want to push in to the violent jungle before we are fully ready to do it. Food, water, then camp are first." Clark saw the other nod.
It was easy to see that they also weren't ready to charge in to a deep wilderness. Having food and water along with a good rest would put everyone in a more focused and relaxed state before they take on that risk.
