Chapter 886 - 859: Prelude
Chapter 886 - 859: Prelude
The rare windy day in the middle of summer brought a drizzle. Entering the summer season, a rain always elevates the temperature. Therefore, in summer, rain does not bring much anticipation, as compared to the cold of winter, the heat of summer is equally unbearable.
The person standing on the balcony, his hair spread with the wind, the thin cheeks accentuating his melancholy. In the living room, two women seemed to be discussing something, suddenly one of them shouted towards the person on the balcony. "Lin, come over and see what you think about this?"
The person standing on the balcony turned back with a smile, and in an instant, the haze in his eyes disappeared. "You can just decide."
Xiao Lin lit a cigarette, his hand holding the lighter slightly trembling. At this moment, he truly felt grateful for his unique physique, which allowed him to stand here. Ultimately, Mu Rongyun was unable to protect Xiao Lin’s final resolve while returning, and the powerful drugs bursting through the acupuncture points into his heart and lungs were inevitable.
Shou followed him to the basement of the City Police Department. Sending him to the hospital would only attract attention. Downstairs, he witnessed Mu Rongyun’s superb skills firsthand, simply by opening a small cut in the appropriate position, using a tube to guide the accumulated toxins above, using a resilient surgical knife to extract the needle and placing it in a test tube, walking to the microscope and starting to measure various indexes with different test slides he couldn’t understand. Although unclear on what this was, he could guess a bit, and his vigilance against Mu Rongyun’s ill intentions subsided.
"Are these wounds just left unattended?" Yelu Shou asked Mu Rongyun, busy on the side, as he watched the liquid flowing from the guiding tube no longer be black.
"Just pull out the tube and it’ll be fine." He looked at the color flowing out, indifferent as if speaking of something entirely meaningless.
"Pull out? No need to stitch anything up?"
"He’ll heal the wound himself, no need for me to worry." Mu Rongyun looked at Yelu Shou with a ’he isn’t your boss’ expression, as if saying not to know even this.
"I know he has this function, but this isn’t just an ordinary wound."
"When he can’t heal it himself, I’ll stitch it up."
"Damn it, you did it on purpose." Yelu Shou finally understood Mu Rongyun’s intention, grasping his collar.
"Hmm! Just because I saved him doesn’t mean we’re friends." Nonchalantly watching Yelu Shou’s hand, holding the test tube in his hand.
"What’s your purpose in doing this?"
"To exchange for a favor! If this reason can’t convince you, I have no other options."
Ha, thinking of this, Xiao Lin couldn’t help but laugh, watching Yelu Shou awkwardly recount the situation of the time, feeling regret for not witnessing the pretentious Mu Rongyun.
"Lin, it’s raining outside, you can’t be exposed to the wind now, come inside quickly." Lian came out to pull Xiao Lin into the living room, the table spread with many tourism brochures oriented northward. When Wu Shuang saw Xiao Lin come in, she quietly sat there.
"Chief Wu, why so quiet today, unlike your usual self."
"I..."
"There’s no need for thanks."
"No need, but still I must say it."
"Really want to thank? Then take good care of those brothers fighting hard for you."
"I hear bribes for you, then forget it!" At this, Wu Shuang couldn’t hold back her temper and glared at Xiao Lin, but the gratitude in her eyes was genuine.
"Don’t look at me like that, someone might kill me."
"Lin, if you keep talking, Officer Wu’s face will turn tomato red."
"You’re teasing me too." Unable to beat Xiao Lin, Wu Shuang had to change her opponent to Lian on the side.
"Hey, you can’t touch my wife, I’ll be heartbroken." In an instant, the three of them tussled together.
Putting down the binoculars, Fourth Master slipped down from the rooftop. "Xia Xue hasn’t appeared around Xiao Lin anymore, looks like he’s recovering well."
"Master, this is the old public housing of the hospital campus, several streets front and back are connected to the campus hospital, entering and exiting isn’t very convenient."
"The roads are a bit narrow, but police cars can’t easily enter, and more importantly, 119 can’t get in either, wouldn’t you say?"
"The structure of old houses is simple, relatively easy for climbing, but doing so might affect innocent people and seems not worthwhile." Lao Zhao reminded Fourth Master, in a crowded area unavoidable considerations must be factored in, also his reason for disliking Fourth Master placing focus domestically.
"Lao Zhao, you worry too much, whether those people can survive entirely depends on their own survival skills. I have only one target, since you’re so concerned, figure out a way to move them yourself."
Watching Fourth Master’s silhouette, Lao Zhao felt utterly unable to grasp this person’s intentions, judging by her confident demeanor, she doesn’t want Xiao Lin’s life, but rather standing in the patriarch’s esteem. He thought, be it in the Middle East or the northern district, continuously suffering setbacks, even without Fourth Master saying it, he feels embarrassed, not because he’s weak but because the opponent is strong. He really wants to tell Fourth Master face-to-face, rather than fighting to the death here, better to seek out new terrain, find a reasonable plan, perhaps then the patriarch might extend a hand to assist.
"Lao Zhao!"
"Yes, Master."
"This is the ticket to fly back, directly send the blood sample to the patriarch, have others handle it, I don’t feel at ease."
"Is Master trying to send me away?"
"No! When the patriarch sees you, he thinks of me, this is my last chance."
Lying! This word jumped into Lao Zhao’s mind. "I understand, Master."
The two figures emerged one after the other from the corridor and got into a silver-gray car. Xiao Lin, with a cigarette in his hand, stared at the smoke tail left by the vehicle.
"What are you looking at?" A drop of water fell on the half-smoked cigarette, creating a spreading water stain.
"Nothing!" Xiao Lin hooked his arm around Lian’s shoulder. "Has Wu Shuang gone back?"
"Yes, she left. I wanted to keep her for dinner, but she said there’s work back at the station." Lian looked back at Xiao Lin. "Really nothing? You’re lying."
"Oh, you can tell? Really can’t marry you as a wife."
"There’s no one else around now, no need to act so much." Lian shoved off Xiao Lin with her elbow. "Be honest, what did you notice?"
Sigh! Being with someone who knows you too well isn’t necessarily a good thing. "Fourth Lord!"
"What? She’s here?"
"Yes, for two days now."
"Why didn’t you say earlier?" Lian looked around in a panic.
"No need to look, she’s gone." Xiao Lin turned over and leaned against the wet rail. "As expected, there will be action in the next couple of days."
"What should we do?"
"Do nothing, wait."
"No way!"
"Huh?"
"With your current condition, you can’t handle a fight, we need to change locations."
"Changing places will yield the same result, just be patient and wait." Xiao Lin took Lian into the living room. "Make me a delicious dinner, it’s probably the last one."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Lian, annoyed at Xiao Lin’s flippancy, obediently tied on an apron and headed to the kitchen.
Xiao Lin picked up the documents tossed on the table; those two women wouldn’t really want to go somewhere that far, would they? Feeling groggy, he started to doze off. This was a drug aftereffect; until fully cleared, such sudden drowsiness is a type of numbing symptom, which shortens with the drug’s diminishing potency.
"Lin!" Lian emerged from the kitchen to find the person asleep on the sofa, let her arms drop, picked up the phone, and walked to the balcony. After a brief conversation, she covered Xiao Lin with a blanket and heard a knock on the door from outside.
"Aunt Sun, what brings you here?" It was the neighbor from across the hall.
"Good news, good news!" Aunt Sun saw someone inside and immediately pulled out two tickets from her pocket for Lian.
"What are these?"
"The neighborhood committee handed them out, two per household. You and your boyfriend can go to the concert. It’s Chopin’s special after his comeback; we’re all going." Mentioning Chopin, Aunt Sun’s eyes lit up, making her seem a few years younger all of a sudden.
"Chopin?"
"Oh, don’t tell me you don’t know who Chopin is!" Aunt Sun looked at Lian as if she were an alien. "Wait a moment, I’ll get you a newspaper." With that, she turned around and dashed back inside, soon coming out with an entertainment magazine. "Take a look, there’s an introduction inside."
"Oh, okay." Closing the door, Xiao Lin had already woken up.
"Aunt Sun?" There was no way he couldn’t wake up, the loud voice of the neighbor was famous in the building.
"You should nap some more!" A hoarse, sleepy voice left Xiao Lin sitting there in a daze.
"I don’t feel like lying down anymore."
"What?" The kitchen still had borscht simmering; Lian rushed back, her hand brushing against the stiff paper on the apron, recalling Aunt Sun’s purpose for visiting. "If you don’t want to sleep, have some soup. It’s been a long time since I made this for you."
"What’s that?" The red envelope entered Xiao Lin’s line of sight prominently.
"Concert tickets from Aunt Sun through the neighborhood committee. Do you know who Chopin is?" Lian handed the concert tickets to Xiao Lin.
"Chopin’s concert?" Taking the tickets, the time was tomorrow evening at 7:30 at the Worker’s Cultural Palace. "How does the neighborhood committee get these?"
"I have no idea!"
"Do all residents get them?" Xiao Lin saw Lian’s bewildered expression.
"I’ll find out, I’ll go ask." Sensing Xiao Lin’s tension, Lian took the concert tickets and went to Aunt Sun’s home.
Chopin’s comeback news was on the front page of the entertainment magazine. After returning from the Middle East, Chopin hadn’t shown up, and the drugs he took away seemed to have vanished from the world. Lao Long hadn’t mentioned this person since, and now suddenly appearing in Yanjing, it was unusual.
"Lin, the Fourth Lord is making his move." (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
