Chapter 1467 - 66 : A New Bargain
Chapter 1467 - 66 : A New Bargain
*Saoirse*
The night was a cloak I gladly wore, its dark folds hiding me from the prying eyes of the Blackstone forces that now infested Hunters Glen. My heart beat a steady rhythm against my ribs as I moved with practiced stealth toward the village that once sang with laughter and life.
It now lay subdued under the weight of foreign banners, their black insignia stark against the gray stone of the walls they erected.
I slipped through the shadows like a wraith, every sense heightened by the familiar yet altered landscape of my childhood. The ground felt unyielding beneath my soft boots, no longer the welcoming earth I remembered but a hard, conquered territory.
A sharp pang of fury sliced through me as I skirted around the edges of the central square. Enemy banners hung limp in the still night, emblazoned with the cruel emblem of a snarling wolf, the mark of Blackstone. Each one was a slap to my face, a challenge to the pride of our pack that had once roamed these lands freely.
My father’s face flashed in my mind, his warm eyes and steadfast presence a beacon of hope in my heart. Even if he had shunned and disowned me, it spurred me on deeper into the belly of the beast toward the pack prison, where I knew they would be keeping my father.
The prison loomed ahead. I crept closer, avoiding the patrols with an ease born of desperation. Peering through the bars of a low window, my breath caught at the sight before me.
There he was, my father. His proud frame was hunched, his skin pallid in the moonlight filtering through the grate. The sight of him so diminished and frail sent a spear of agony through my chest. He was the heart of our pack. Seeing him caged like this was more than just personal. It was an affront to everything we stood for.
"Dad," I whispered, the word barely leaving my lips. He did not stir, lost in whatever torturous dreams plagued him in his slumber.
No matter his harsh and uncaring treatment before, I knew then that I would do anything, risk everything, to see him free. My mission was to restore pride and strength to Hunters Glen and cast out the usurpers who dared claim it as their own.
But first, I needed to survive the night, unnoticed and undetected. I skirted the prison’s perimeter and found a door less guarded.
But fate twisted cruelly.
"Who goes there?" The voice cut through the night. Beta Silas loomed before me, flanked by soldiers whose eyes gleamed with the thrill of the hunt.
"Easy, lads," Silas said, his grin sharp and knowing. "We’ve caught ourselves a little bird trying to sneak into the cage."
"Silas," I said, steadying my voice. "You know who I am. You know why I’m here."
"Indeed, Saoirse Strider," he replied, circling me like a predator. "Daughter of the fallen Alpha. But your place is not here in the shadows. It is before Alpha Aleric."
"Let me see my father," I demanded, but they were already upon me, firm hands seizing my arms.
"Your reunion will have to wait," Silas sneered as they dragged me from the prison. "Alpha Aleric has been waiting for you, girl."
Panic rose like bile in my throat, but I pushed it down. This was not the end.
"Wait for me, Dad," I mouthed through the barred window, catching a glimpse of his gaunt profile. "I’ll see you free. I promise."
His eyes flickered, a brief glint of recognition, and then we were moving, leaving behind the stench of despair that clung to the walls of the prison.
The crunch of gravel beneath my boots was loud as I marched between the Blackstone soldiers. Their grips were iron on my arms, the bite of handcuffs a cold shackle. My breath misted in the cool night air, a stark contrast to the heat of anger flushing my skin.
Silas’s smirk was vicious as he opened the SUV’s door, gesturing with mock courtesy. "After you."
I slid into the leather seat without a word, the vehicle’s interior swallowing me in its darkness. The engine roared to life. We drove in silence, the soldiers’ eyes boring into me, but I refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing my resolve waver.
The journey felt endless, each passing mile stretching out like a cruel reminder of my captivity. Though, in reality, it wasn’t long at all. The Blackstone compound loomed ahead. Towering walls of grey stone rose around them, illuminated by bright spotlights.
It felt less like pack lands and more like a military fortress.
As we approached the gates, they parted without question as if they had been waiting for our arrival. I supposed they had. Beta Silas had said Alpha Aleric was waiting for me.
"Welcome home, Saoirse," Aleric’s voice dripped with venomous warmth as I stepped from the SUV. His silhouette, framed by the doorway, towered over me, imposing and unyielding.
"Home," I spat the word out as if it were poison. "This will never be my home, Aleric."
His laugh was a low rumble. "Ah, but your presence here suggests otherwise. You’ve come to submit to the inevitable."
"Never." I stood tall, the fire of my ancestry igniting within me. "I’ve come to negotiate for my people, not to grovel at your feet."
We moved into the heart of his stronghold, soldiers trailing along behind us just waiting for me to make a move they could act against. The grand hall was a cavern of intimidation lined with tapestries depicting the Blackstone victories. Vicious, bloodied battles surrounded me. At its end, a massive table of dark wood waited.
"Sit," Aleric commanded, gesturing to a chair across from him.
I complied, our gazes locked in silent battle. "My father needs medical attention, food, and proper living conditions."
Aleric leaned back, steepling his fingers. "Your father is a prisoner. He will be treated as such. Submit, and perhaps I’ll consider leniency."
"Leniency?" I scoffed. "You mean crumbs from your table after you’ve feasted on our dignity?"
"Poetic but misguided." Aleric’s eyes were hard as flint. "I offer you an opportunity to save your people from annihilation. Accept my rule, fully and without condition, and they shall live under my protection."
"Protection?" My voice rose, sharp as a blade. "Or subjugation? You would crush us beneath your heel and call it mercy."
"Call it what you will," he said, unmoved. "It changes nothing. Without your surrender, there can be no compromise."
"You’re wrong, Aleric," I hissed, leaning forward. "There is always another way. We will not bow to tyranny."
"Then you choose death for all you hold dear." His tone was final.
"Then, on my honor as Saoirse Strider, daughter of the true Alpha, I will find that other way. We may fall, but we will rise again. We will be free." My words hung in the air, a vow etched in the stone of my resolve.
Aleric regarded me with a mix of amusement and irritation. "So be it. Let the games begin."
“My father sought an alliance with your pack. You spat on that with your hostility.”
Aleric stood, his fists slamming on the table as his face turned a shade of red so deep it was nearly purple. Spittle flew from his lips as he spoke.
“You spat on it when you spread your legs for the Crimson prince like the whore you are! My son is dead because you couldn’t be bothered to honor the marriage contract! Your father sought an alliance, but it was ruined the moment you chose to turn your back on your duty!”
I clenched my fists, feeling the last vestiges of hope slip through my fingers. He sat before me, a smug sovereign on a throne built from the bones of my people’s freedom.
“You will marry me. You will marry me and bear me a new heir to replace the one you destroyed.”
I stared at Aleric in disbelief, my body shaking with rage. "You expect me to marry you? After everything you’ve done?"
"I expect you to fulfill the bargain you made," he replied coolly. "As for my actions, they were necessary for the greater good."
"Do you call killing innocent people and destabilizing entire regions ’necessary?’ Your actions are nothing but tyrannical and despicable."
Aleric’s expression hardened, his eyes blazing with fury. "Your words mean nothing to me, Saoirse. You are nothing but a pawn in this game."
"I am not a pawn." I shot back. "I am a leader, a protector of my people. And I will not stand by while you try to destroy them."
"Then perhaps it is time for you to make a choice," he said, leaning forward. "Submit to me and save your people, or continue on this futile path and watch them suffer."
I felt torn between my duty and my love for my people. How could I choose between their safety and my happiness?
I hesitated, weighing the options in my mind. My people needed me, but at what cost? I knew I had to make a decision, but it was not an easy one. Hadn’t I already done this? Hadn’t I already given up my happiness for the sake of my people? They hadn’t appreciated it but expected it from me when they would never have made the same choices.
But I had chosen happiness once, but that hadn’t turned out. I rubbed my hand across my abdomen absently. Would I even be able to hide the truth of my child’s parentage if it came down to it? Or would I be putting us both at risk by allowing this to happen?
"Take one last look at your options, Saoirse," Aleric said, his voice smooth like oil over water, dangerous and dark. "This is the end of the line."
The muscles in my jaw twitched as I ground my teeth together. My heart pounded against my ribs, each beat a drum of war, a call to stand even when standing seemed futile. But there, in that moment, I knew. The ace up my sleeve, the dragon hand I had held close all this time was ready to be revealed.
"End of the line?" I echoed, allowing a thin smile to play on my lips. "You think you’ve backed me into a corner but overlooked something crucial, Aleric."
His brow furrowed, curiosity piqued beneath the façade of indifference. "And what would that be?"
"Let me show you." I rose from the chair, every movement deliberate.
Aleric nodded to his guards, two hulking figures who flanked him like gargoyles come to life. They followed as he strode behind me to the great doors of the hall. With a push, the doors swung open, revealing the dark expanse of the night sky.
"Look outside, Alpha Aleric," I instructed, a whisper of triumph lacing my voice. "Look and see the truth."
