Chapter 118: Flank Attack
Chapter 118: Flank Attack
Bahram's gaze lingered on those two corpses for a while. Both of them lay in a dark red puddle of blood smooth as a mirror; the steam from their wounds had already ceased.
He knew that if they continued to be pinned down here, they would lose even more.
"Bahram."
Ford said solemnly:
"Can you four handle it?"
The implied meaning was very simple. This task of flanking and attacking from the side was to be handed over to their lower-hive four-person group.
Strictly speaking, this risk was very great. Because Bahram was not certain whether Ford would suddenly abandon them and retreat into the woods while the four of them went to launch a flanking attack.
Although he currently didn't look like that kind of person, once the four of them attracted the opposing side's attention, it would be hard to say.
However, he still decided to trust the other party. After all, this trial was very important. Ford should know the severity of the situation.
"Haomo, come over here!"Amidst Bahram's call, the other three crawled over on their bellies, trying their best not to expose their bodies too much outside the safe zone.
"What's up? Getting ready to use the automaton?"
As soon as Kerisa arrived, he started hollering, attracting several more bullets and scaring everyone into shrinking their heads in succession.
"This is our trump card. We cannot use it unless as an absolute last resort."
Ford hurriedly made his stance clear, but exchanged it for the other party's mockery.
"Then you'll have to go say that to the two dead unlucky bastards."
"You—"
"Now is not the time to argue."
Bahram promptly interrupted the two of them, and then said earnestly to the other three:
"There's a new plan now—"
But Ford immediately snatched the topic away.
"You four route around to the right flank and conceal yourselves well. Loop over from here; don't get targeted by the machine gun! Once you are in position, I want you to let these pieces of trash witness hell. You don't need to hit any specific targets. I only need you to lure their main force away from this end. You must make them believe their right flank has suffered a concentrated attack, or make them think another team has joined in. This shouldn't be hard to do? I'm absolutely certain the guys here are all rookies. You can strike them at will. Is that clear?"
"Easy for you to say. Why don't you go then?"
Kerisa still wouldn't let slip a single opportunity to bicker with the other party.
"This is an order!"
"I spit! You just want us to draw firepower for you!"
"Kerisa, you are—"
"Enough!"
Bahram sternly shouted, cutting off this meaningless argument. He rarely revealed his angry side, but when rage truly surged onto his face, everyone was intimidated by his imposing aura. Even Ford obediently shut his mouth.
"We'll do just that."
He had spoken. The others didn't have anything to argue over either.
"I've been wanting to beat them up for a long time."
Kerisa grinned, bearing his teeth.
"Very well."
Haomo grabbed the rifle beside him.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!"
Quickly, the four of them quietly left their cover and began looping around to the other side. Ford turned to face the others and said:
"You remaining people know what we're going to do. It will be very dangerous for them to charge across the open ground. We will provide them cover fire. The signal will be a burst fire from my Pistol. Understand?"
"Yes, sir!"
Everyone responded neatly.
Ford turned his head, watching the four people spread out before their eyes.
He silently prayed in his heart that the Emperor would smile upon them this time.
"Fire!"
A single gunshot rang out, followed by the continuous explosive roars of multiple rifles firing continuously. Next, the machine gun also rang out.
The silent battlefield instantly grew bustling once again.
"Run!"
In the minds of the other four, only this single word remained in common. They swiftly crossed a stretch of open ground, their boots crunching as they stepped upon the crushed gravel.
While advancing, Bahram's gaze continuously swept across every single shadow, searching for any possible existing enemies.
What they were walking on basically couldn't be considered a road. The terrain in this area seemed to have been deliberately destroyed. The road itself was stuffed in complete disarray with twisted, collapsed tree trunks and crushed boulders.
A small portion of tree stumps were still stuck in the ground, like tombstones. Bahram guessed that these should be signs left behind after the Chapter's construction.
These crushed stones were very likely caused after being rolled over by heavy machinery.
So far, they had not encountered the obstruction of even a single enemy. However, the gunfire over on that side was still very intense.
Bahram divided them into two small groups to flank and attack the enemy's firepower point. He and Haomo formed a group, while Kerisa and Robin formed a group. They advancing while providing cover fire for one another.
The group hunkered down in the stronghold was still continuously opening fire on their other team members from the other side.
Suddenly, Haomo stopped. Bahram turned to look at him and asked:
"What's wrong?"
"Seems like there's somebody here."
Sure enough, Bahram fixed his eyes and took a look, discovering three sneaky shadows—under the cover of the dim lighting—routing around a patch of crushed rocks to appear on the right side of their original position.
It was very obvious that the plans of both sides were the same. The opposing side also planned to launch a flanking sneak attack on them while their group was suffering firepower suppression.
Before Bahram could come up with a countermeasure, Haomo had already instinctively raised his gun and fired off bullets.
The leading sneak-attacker fell to the ground in response, his chest dyed red.
Bahram and the other two subsequently fired at the remaining sneak-attackers. One of them took two solid shots to the shoulder and thigh. Although it wasn't enough to kill him, it caused him to start Screaming.
The other person quickly ditched him and hid behind cover.
Seeing that the sneak attack was about to turn into a direct confrontation.
Robin suddenly dashed forward without saying a word. With extremely swift speed, he drew his dagger and ruthlessly stabbed it right into that screaming guy's head. Then, right when the other one stuck his head out to shoot, he forcefully threw his dagger, nailing it directly into the opposing party's forehead.
All three sneak-attackers were annihilated.
Watching this scene, Bahram was stunned. He wasn't only surprised by the other party's skill, but also surprised by this person's cruelty.
"Hurry up and let's go. They probably can't hold on anymore."
Under Haomo's reminder, Bahram noticed that there was something wrong with the gunfire over there.
It was too dense, and had gone on for too long. Ford wouldn't be stupid enough to senselessly waste ammunition.
He stood up to look, discovering that the situation in the area where the team was suppressed was very abnormal. One portion of the team members were shooting forward, while another portion was shooting backward, shooting toward the jungle they had arrived from.
For this situation, there could only be one possibility.
"Damn it! Another team has entered the fray."
At this time, the walkie-talkie Bahram carried also rang out.
"Are you guys ready yet! We've got incoming from behind! Another one just went down! If you don't hurry up, we're all done for!! If there are no results in three minutes, I'll use the automaton!!! You better hurry up!"
Hearing Ford's despairing roar, Bahram took a deep breath and led the team to sprint forward swiftly, very quickly arriving near that temporary concealed bunker.
But what he hadn't anticipated was that through the previous screams, the other party had already detected their movements. After Ford's group was suppressed by the rear firepower, they surprisingly moved the machine gun out, planning to deploy it on the flank.
This was terrible news. Because there was no longer any solid cover near Bahram and the others.
At this moment, only one strategy remained.
