Seraphina's Revenge: A Rebirth In The Apocalypse Novel

Chapter 82: Want To Know What Will Happen Next?

Chapter 82: Want To Know What Will Happen Next?

The muzzle of Zubair’s pistol didn’t move.

His stance was solid. His eyes locked on Sera’s chest. The only thing that moved was the faint rise and fall of his breathing—and even that was done in complete control.

Sera didn’t flinch. She didn’t glance at Lachlan or the blood or the still twitching headless body of her old professor by the freezer.

Instead, she just stared at Zubair and raised an eyebrow.

"You’re an idiot," she said at last. "Do you really think that killing me is going to do anything at all to help the situation?"

Alexei let out a low whistle. "Jesus, sweetheart. Read the room, da? It’s not wise to call a man who has a gun pointed at you an idiot."

"I call them like I see them," replied Sera, shrugging her shoulders like this wasn’t a matter of life or death... like this wasn’t a matter of her life or death. "I may or may not die if he pulls the trigger, but he definitely will. I thought you were all for him staying alive?"

She jerked her thumb toward Lachlan who hadn’t taken his eyes off Zubair since he had trained his gun on Sera. "Going by the look on his face, he will be more than happy to take out your team leader."

Alexei shook his head and swung his rifle over his shoulder so that his hand were free. Lachlan tracked his movements, but when he saw that the other man was no longer a threat, he went back to staring at Zubair. "I’m blaming his bad decisions on blood loss and an odd sense of morality and loyalty to his teammates. See? He’s bleeding," he continued, drawing everyone’s attention to where the blood was still dripping freely from Zubair’s arm.

"Maybe we should get going before he gets twitchy and I get ze desire to go play beach ball by the ocean with his head, da?" Sera studied the man in front of her with dirty blond hair and couldn’t help but marvel just how well he could read the room.

In fact, she would almost have suspected that he was doing to his best to diffuse the situation.

Interesting.

"If it’s any consolation," she started with a sigh, closing her eyes as she took in a deep breath. She had no intentions of keeping up with any human-like relationships this time around, it was one of the reasons why she hadn’t called her parents yet to see how they were doing with everything.

But the more time she spent with these four men, the more they were wearing away that resolution.

"He’s not going to become a zombie simply by being scratched by one. That’s not how this works."

At her words, Elias’ head snapped around in her direction as his gazed narrowed. "And how would you know how this works?" he demanded. "Since the beginning, it was like you knew what would happen next. Are we to just believe that you are innocent in everything? That is assuming that you were the one whispering in Lachlan’s ear before the outbreak."

"Outbreak?" sneered Sera, her face twisting in a sarcastic grin. "That’s a cute term for what is happening. You must be a government employee if that is the language you are using."

Rubbing her forehead, she was acutely aware of where Lachlan was practically vibrating beside her, unsure as to what to do next.

"You seem like you like logic, do you know anything about the animal kingdom?" she asked, raising hooded eyes at Elias. "Because if this was like how they showed zombies on TV, they would be a lot easier to kill. You know how things with a really long lifespan have a harder time conceiving kids? I think it has something to do about food sources? The same things applies to zombies. If a drop of their saliva could change someone into a zombie, they would be running out of food two days into the apocalypse."

"And who said that this was a zombie apocalypse?" demanded Elias, sneering at her like he caught her in a lie or a trap. "To my knowledge, no zombie looks like this, and the government has come out to say that this is nothing more than mental patients who have escaped from The Abbie J. Lane hospital."

"You’re not serious right now... right?" demanded Sera, everything inside of her stopping at Elias’ comment. "Please tell me that he is joking right now?" she continued, turning to look at Alexei.

The massive man simply shrugged his shoulders. "He’s a bit tricky when it comes to making a joke," he grunted. "He has his own sense of humor and I am still trying to figure it out."

"Don’t change the subject," interjected Elias. "Why are you so certain that these people aren’t just mental patients?"

Alexei stepped between the two of them, also shielding Sera from the bullet if Zubair decided to pull the trigger. "Now, everyone, let’s take a step back. You know we have a problem if I am the voice of reason amongst all of us. We can put a pin in everything but Papa Smurf. Let’s figure out how we are going to turn him back into a more human version and go from there. Da?"

Sera let out a long sigh and cracked her neck from side to side. "We are going to leave the store, let him calm down, and find more supplies somewhere else. Given enough time, he’ll calm down on his own."

Elias continued to stare at her, even with Alexei blocking the way. "I still think that you know more than you are letting on," he grunted.

"I’m a woman, of course I know more than I am letting on. Did you want me to tell you your future while I am at it? Given enough time, it will also prove that I am always right, too. What do you say, Elias? Do you want to know what will happen next?

Lachlan took the moment of silence to let out a low grumble as Zubair finally lowered his weapon. "I don’t want to know the future," he grunted. "But we do need supplies. Let’s move on to the next location and see what is there before more people figure out that the government isn’t going to rescue them."
