Chapter 456: Waiting For Her
Chapter 456: Waiting For Her
By the time they reached the truck, the entire building behind them had crumbled to dust.
Those who could get out, did, but none of them were going to take the chance that the CDC would continue with whatever dumbfuckery they had invented.
Sera slid into the passenger seat and closed her eyes. She was so sick and tired of humans deciding that they needed to play god at the expense of others. At least with her creature, it had always been there... it wasn’t something that someone had implanted just to see if they could.
That didn’t mean that Adam hadn’t tried. He did over and over again, trying to create a perfect hybrid between the living and the dead, but he was never successful.
She shivered once at the thought of Adam actually getting what he wanted at the end of the day. She didn’t think that anyone would be able to survive that.
Looking out over the flat horizon, Sera contemplated a few things. She knew they were heading toward Region L... they were going to where Adam’s lab was hidden in that Sanctuary that wasn’t a Sanctuary. To her, that was important.
But the creature under her skin didn’t seem to agree with her. It felt almost like a dog crying ’squirrel’ every time a rodent passed by. Her creature wanted to enjoy the world around them, to learn and experience everything that it had been denied.
And for the most part, Sera did, too. But lately, something had been happening under her skin that neither her, nor her creature could pinpoint.
Stop and smell the roses, her creature chuckled and Sera could feel it shaking its head. What will come will come, and since we don’t know what will happen next, the important thing is to just enjoy every day.
’We need to destroy Adam,’ Sera sighed as Zubair started the truck and started forward. ’That is what will happen next.’
Maybe, agreed the creature. But what will happen after that? Will we die too?
Sera lifted an eyebrow as she took Oogie Boogie from her space and wrapped her arms around it. ’That almost sounded like fear,’ she said as the world outside the truck turned into a blur. ’Don’t tell me you are scared.’
I’m not scared, protested the creature, but Sera knew that it could feel the approaching sense of doom. But I do believe in being prepared.
’And just how do we go about doing that?’ Sera replied, sarcastically.
By getting more food. There was a slight pause before the creature continued. And letting me out more.
Sera paused for a second, just long enough for the rest of the men in the truck to turn to look at her and tense. ’I thought I have been letting you out,’ she said, refusing to look at any of the men. That was a whole other kettle of fish that she didn’t want to deal with.
Not now.
Not when there was still Adam to deal with.
You let me out like Lachlan lets his other half out, said the creature, measuring its words carefully. Part me, part you... but you are still in control.
’And you don’t want me in control,’ mused Sera as she forced herself not to stiffen. Taking a chocolate bar out of her space, she bit into it, trying to let the sweetness settle her nerves.
The silence from the creature inside of her spoke volumes. Was that how this was going to be? One of them would die so the other could exist?
Or were they just a different version of the parasite in the basement labs, one using the other until there was nothing left of the host?
Looking into the rearview mirror, Sera studied Aerenyx. Elias had died so that Aerenyx could take over. There was nothing left of Elias, not a thought, not a breath, not a whisper.
Was that what was waiting for her?
She shook her head and turned her attention back to the outside. You don’t have to die, said the creature after having read her thoughts. It’s not like that.
’You seem so certain,’ sneered Sera, letting out a long breath.
We aren’t like them. They were human and became other from a vaccine. You and I were always like this. I was just too weak before.
’Do you know what changed?’
There was a third thing inside of us one day. It just... appeared. It was small, nothing more than the size of a seed. But if we had let it grow, it would have killed both of us at some point.
Sera’s eyes went wide and from the corner of her eye, she could see Zubair copying the motion. Shaking her head, she closed her eyes.
When she was still in her old life, Lucifer had said that she had a demon seed... wrath... that it would cross over to this life... that it would give her power. Was that what her creature was talking about? The demon seed?
’What did you do to it?’ Sera asked, wondering if she really would have died if she had a demon inside of her as well as the creature.
I ate it, shrugged the creature. But there was a power inside of it that helped push me out of the darkness and into the light. That was the reason why I am awake. And that is the reason why I could not let it live.
Once again, Sera nodded her head, not knowing what else to do.
"Everything okay?" asked Zubair, his deep voice cutting through the conversation Sera was having in her head. "Your face is..."
"Weird," supplied Lachlan.
"Twitchy," interjected Aerenyx.
"Beautiful," shrugged Alexei.
"Expressive," continued Zubair. "I was going with expressive."
Sera smiled. "Just getting a bit hungry.
Zubair heard the tone more than the words. His mouth curved the slightest amount. "We can fix that," he assured her. "I’m sure that there are enough people here for you to feel full."
"And if not, we can always see if there is a Micky D’s somewhere around that will do takeout," smirked Lachlan as Alexei reached past Aerenyx and slapped him upside the head.
"What?!?" demanded Lachlan. "I was being serious!"
"So was I," grumbled Zubair. "If Sera wants food, then we will make sure that she gets food."
