Chapter 115: Gossip Must Be Shared
Chapter 115: Gossip Must Be Shared
Jiang Cheng and Grandma Shen exchanged glances, both wearing the same "gossipy expressions" on their faces.
Grandma Shen tiptoed over and sat cross-legged on the chair.
"Comfortable!"
She had been waiting for this moment for many days.
Jiang Cheng smiled with her eyes and pushed over the shelled sunflower seeds.
"Have some, chatting dryly is kind of boring."
Grandma Shen picked up the shelled seeds, asking skeptically: "Didn’t Shen Yue shell these for you?"
"Offering flowers to Buddha... Mainly because I really can’t eat anymore, you guys fed me too much tonight."
Jiang Cheng patted her still somewhat bloated stomach and leaned back into a comfortable position.
After eating some shelled seeds, Grandma Shen naturally leaned forward, her voice instinctively lowered.
"Yang Guihua’s real mother, the girl who grabs Shen Yue’s stuff, Lin Jiaojiao’s mother-in-law, she’s come down."
"Director Zhang from the street has become the big leader of our area!"
"You wouldn’t know, Lin Jiaojiao used to come back every day flaunting, the matter hadn’t even been settled, she’d already started shouting that her mother-in-law would be promoted this time, but in the end... not only didn’t she get promoted, but was also dismissed."
Originally leaning back, Jiang Cheng suddenly leaned forward.
"Why was she dismissed?"
Jiang Cheng could guess it was Director Zhang riding the coattails of the fabric scrap packet.
Before leaving, she had delivered some news about Director Hu forging documents, but she didn’t know how the operation was carried out specifically.
Grandma Shen leaned closer again, her voice even lower.
"On the surface they say it’s retiring due to poor health, but actually, I heard she embezzled quite a bit when she was the director. But the Yang Family is powerful, they covered it up, saying it’s retirement."
Jiang Cheng responded with an "oh," displaying a satisfied look of eating melon seeds.
Grandma Shen then said worriedly, "Be careful, a cornered dog might jump over the wall, Director Zhang’s rise is true, but the fabric scrap packet you arranged also played quite a part."
Jiang Cheng picked up her teacup, took a sip, and with a voice only two could hear, said: "It’s fine, the Yang Family won’t enjoy its glory for long."
Grandma Shen, surprised, stepped back a bit, reminding her: "Don’t tell me, secrecy is success! Don’t be like Lin Jiaojiao, making a fuss when not even the first stroke of the Chinese character is done."
Jiang Cheng wholeheartedly agreed.
The gossip continued.
From Grandma Shen’s words, Jiang Cheng learned the reason for Lin Chengyuan’s impending promotion.
The Factory Director Sun of the machinery factory is going for a provincial position; the director’s position is now vacant.
The subordinate directors and deputy factory managers are all eager, and Lin Chengyuan was recruited through the Yang Family’s influence.
At present, it seems Lin Chengyuan is quite confident about the team he’s chosen to side with.
After listening, Jiang Cheng summarized: "The louder the chorus, the happier the hopping ones often are the least chosen."
Grandma Shen agreed and said that’s true.
"You’re right, this kid Lin Chengyuan has always aimed high since he was young, never achieving anything much."
"By the way, He Dan has found a job."
Jiang Cheng asked slightly surprised:
"What kind of job?"
"The bathhouse, cleaning the pools."
Jiang Cheng was genuinely shocked.
Grandma Shen, animatedly sharing, excitedly asked, "Unbelievable, right?"
Jiang Cheng made a sound of acknowledgment, decisively said: "Really unimaginable! He Dan is so concerned about her face, how did she agree to do this?"
Grandma Shen clicked her tongue twice.
"What’s the deal? When married, it’s either the east wind crushing the west wind, or the west wind topping the east wind. With Lin Chengyuan poised to rise up and fortune, could He Dan still sit idle at home?"
"Besides, this job was arranged by Lin Jiaojiao through the Yang Family."
"On the day bringing back the news, Lin Jiaojiao severely disgraced He Dan, calling her a freeloader, that a good-hearted sister-in-law found her a job and she still hesitated, plus Lin’s mother, and Lin’s old lady on the side, could He Dan not agree?"
Jiang Cheng listened to the gossip, clearly she hadn’t been away for long, yet why did it feel like so much had happened?
After gossiping for three hours, both felt physically exhausted but mentally "rich."
After a good night’s sleep, Jiang Cheng got up early as usual, returning to her home routine.
Around six o’clock, Jiang Cheng opened the door and came out, just to meet Granny Sun coming to find her.
"Good morning, Granny Sun."
Granny Sun said nothing, simply walked up to Jiang Cheng and succinctly asked: "Still renting?"
"Yes!"
Only then did Jiang Cheng remember that Shen Que was coming back, she had to move out.
Upon hearing this, Granny Sun pointed to the direction to the left of Shen’s house and said: "The next door is leaving, want to check it out?"
"Sure, when shall we talk?"
Jiang Cheng was straightforward, Granny Sun was even more decisive.
"Now."
Jiang Cheng followed Granny Sun to the next door.
The west wing where the Shen Family lived had five rooms in total, Shen’s took up three, the next door occupied two.
Next door lived a senior technical worker from the textile factory, rumored to have been invited by Factory Director Fang three times.
If He Dan and Lin Chengyuan loved to flaunt, then the person next door was truly arrogant.
Never interacted with people in the courtyard.
In Grandma Shen’s words: she’s barely seen this person’s facial features except the nostrils.
At that time, Jiang Cheng had commented: He’s really tall then!
She distinctly remembered her comment earned her a long eye-roll from Grandma Shen.
A few steps later they arrived at the next door.
The door was half open.
A person was facing away, packing luggage.
Jiang Cheng, inopportunely, thought: not even that tall.
"Zhu Bin, sublet it."
Granny Sun straightforward as usual, the man packing luggage turned around, pushing forward a paper with his left hand.
"I rented for three years, four months left, pay four months rent to the textile factory, afterward pay the street."
Jiang Cheng stepped forward, looked down at the paper with the sublease agreement.
Her eyes flashed.
There was something wrong with the handwriting.
Jiang Cheng picked up the sublease agreement, seemingly curious, asked: "Master Zhu, changing rooms?"
Zhu Bin continued what he was doing, only after a while did he speak: "Rent or not?"
"Rent! How could I not rent?"
Jiang Cheng, using the excuse of getting a pen and money, headed next door.
Next door to Shen’s house.
Jiang Cheng wrote two notes to Shen Xing, whispered a few words in Shen Xing’s ear.
"Understand?"
"I understand, sis!"
Jiang Cheng patted Shen Xing’s shoulder, turned to grab the money and pen and went again next door.
Within minutes of Jiang Cheng leaving, Shen Xing carried a bowl of beans to Li Chunxiang’s house and exchanged them for a piece of tofu.
Another ten minutes later, Li Chunxiang rode her bicycle to work.
From the courtyard, Li Chunxiang biked towards the machinery factory for a while before changing direction at an intersection, pedaling with all her might.
A few minutes later, screeching brakes sprayed some gravel as Li Chunxiang hastily stopped her bike and rushed into the police station.
"Is Leader Tang here! Jiang Cheng asked me to find you!"
Li Chunxiang shouted loudly, drawing out Leader Tang who was just about to end his night shift.
"What’s with Jiang Cheng?"
With his buttons in disarray, Leader Tang hurried out, waiting for Li Chunxiang to speak.
Li Chunxiang immediately pulled out a note, breathlessly handing it to Leader Tang.
Leader Tang took it, unfolded it.
Jiang Cheng’s handwriting unmistakable, it read:
’Suspected espionage personnel, no direct evidence, about to relocate, senior technician of the city textile factory: Zhu Bin.’
