Chapter 84. Wolfkin.
Chapter 84. Wolfkin.
The lead tracker was a thin man with a crossbow.
He moved carefully as his eyes scanned the forest floor for any signs of passage.
He crouched occasionally to examine any broken branches and disturbed leaves while the others fanned out behind him with their weapons drawn.
From what they doing , it was easy for anyone to see that they were hunting something or more precisely, someone.
But then suddenly, the lead tracker stopped moving.
He tilted his head, as though he had heard something, but then, to both Ray and Mira’s surprise, three bounty hunters suddenly dropped to the ground.
It had happened so fast even Ray couldn’t see what had happened.
All he could see was a blur of motion and a flash of steel, then three men collapsed with their throats cut before the others could even realized that they were under attack.
"Contact!" one of the hunters screamed but it was too late.
The attacker moved like wind and a fourth hunter went down.
He was clutching his chest where claws had opened him from his collar to his hip.
A fifth hunter tried to raise his sword but his head got separated from his body before the blade cleared its sheath.
The remaining three hunters broke formation and ran.
They tried making five steps but a couple of compressed air attacks launched and slammed into the first runner’s back, sending him crashing into a tree with enough force to snap his spine.
The second hunter witnessed this and trembled.
He dashed away to a different direction but he suddenly tripped over something invisible.
It almost felt like an invisible wind trap had been set on the floor, so the hunter couldn’t see it and could only fall face-first.
But before he could hit the ground, a few sharp and long claws found his neck and ripped his throat.
As for the last hunter, he was lucky to escape the farthest and he had almost reached the edge of the clearing before a figure dropped the branches above and landed on his back, driving him face first into the dirt.
There was a wet sound of blood gushing out of the hunter’s body and the hunter could be seen gurgling in his own blood, but then silence followed.
Ray watched as the figure slowly stood up.
To his surprise, he noticed the person slaughtering the hunters was actually a female.
She was small, maybe about five and a half feet tall at most.
She had caramel colored skin with black wolf ears that flicked stop her head, listening for any signs of threats nearby.
She also had a black bushy tail that swayed behind her as well, but she was wearing a torn leather wrap around her chest and waist which barely had enough to be called clothing.
Her arms and legs were covered in old scars with some scars fading slowly in her body with age while others look recent and still pink.
Her hands were currently stained in blood and her claws had extended from her fingers, allowing Ray to see how long, curved and dripping each claws were.
Her eyes were ember in color and they glowed in the dark as she looked around the clearing slowly.
Her breathing was steady despite having just killed eight men in under thirty seconds but Ray and Mira didn’t move.
Mira stayed beside him but the wolf girl’s ears twitched nonetheless, then she turned her head slightly in their direction.
Noticing this, Ray’s hand went to his sword and the wolf girl’s eyes locked into their position.
For a brief moment, neither of them moved but then the wolf girl finally spoke.
"Nora can smell human with two others hiding over there." The wolf girl could easily identify the scent of a human which was different from the scent of a Tauren and a wyvern.
However, Nora found it strange to see these three together as a group, hiding from her.
From what she could see, Nora was certain they weren’t in the same group with the hunters she had killed because those guys all smelled the same.
They smelled like blood mixed with ale, sweat and sex.
However, these three didn’t smell like that.
But what Nora found very strange was the sight of human walking along with a Tauren and a wyvern.
Never before had Nora seen any human in this side of town walking around with a demihuman.
It wasn’t common so Nora needed to find out if they were working with those bounty hunters or not.
"Step out now before Nora attacks." Nora warned and her voice was rough like she hadn’t spoken much recently.
Ray stood up slowly and he kept his hands visible enough for her to see.
Mira did the same but the wolf girl didn’t retract her claws.
"Is your name Nora?" Ray asked calmly because he noticed she kept referring to herself in third person.
Nora’s tail flicked once behind her and she furrowed her brows as she alternated her gaze between Ray and Mira.
"Nora is Nora. Who is sneaky human?"
"My name is Ray. This is Mira and that’s Rime. We’re not here to hurt you."
Nora’s eyes narrowed.
"Nora heard that before. Humans always lie."
Ray nodded slowly. "That’s fair and I don’t blame you for doubting us. You’ve definitely got no reason to trust us."
"Nora doesn’t trust humans."
"I wouldn’t either."
Nora tilted her head slightly, confused by his response.
Most humans would have been offended or felt defensive by her words by now.
In fact, some would have tried to convince her immediately that she was wrong.
But this human just... agreed with her?
Ray gestured toward the dead bounty hunters. "You’re being chased, aren’t you?" He asked and Nora nodded once in a very swift motion.
"Nora kills hunters and hunters stop chasing."
"More will surely come though." Ray warned but Nora replied sternly.
"And Nora will kill them too."
Ray smiled faintly. "How long have you been running?"
Nora’s ears flattened slightly. "Nora doesn’t answer questions from humans."
