Chapter 274 - 104: My Granny is Training Her Voice (2)

"Jie You." Seeing her son disobey, Xu Chunyan’s expression turned serious.

Jing Er was on a business trip, and her aunt had been sent away. If she didn’t do her best to curry favor with Granny, she would have even less standing in this family.

Granny didn’t like her. It wasn’t because Granny had disliked her late mother-in-law, but because of Xu Chunyan’s own family. They were always coming to the Jie Family to cause a scene, and every time they did, Qiao Yanqiu would give them money. Granny strongly disapproved of this. But now that the Xu Family had run into trouble, Xu Chunyan’s mother and younger brother no longer dared to show up and make a fuss, so Granny’s attitude toward her was bound to change.

"Why are you being so harsh with Xiao You? He’s so little. What if he scalds himself if you make him get water? Xiao You is your father-in-law’s only grandson right now," Granny scolded Xu Chunyan.

Not only was Xu Chunyan not angry, she was actually pleased. ’As long as Granny likes Xiao You, it’s fine.’ Her stable position in this family was all thanks to giving birth to him. "Yes, yes, Granny, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have asked Xiao You to get you water. I’ll get it for you. Xiao You, you stay and talk with your great-granny."

As Xu Chunyan went to get the water, Granny beckoned to Xiao You. She shifted her body and patted the wicker chair. "Xiao You, come here. Come to Great-Granny."

Jie You fidgeted with his fingers, dawdling as he walked toward Granny. His chubby body squeezed onto the wicker chair with her. Jie You rested his little head against Granny’s chest. She had that particular old-person smell, and the little guy found it quite unpleasant. He wanted to get up, but then he remembered his mother’s words. The little fellow frowned, leaned back again, and said coaxingly, "Great-Granny, I want to eat beggar’s chicken."

"I’ll buy it. Great-Granny will buy it for you." Granny stroked the little fellow’s chubby cheeks. When it came to a child who was acting cute and trying to please her, Granny wasn’t stingy at all.

"Really?" The little fellow’s face lit up with excitement.

"Oh, my sweet great-grandson, when has Great-Granny ever lied to you?" Granny chuckled. She cupped the little fellow’s chubby face in her wrinkled hands and planted a big SMOOCH on his cheek.

The little fellow was inwardly disgusted, but the thought of beggar’s chicken made his heart soar with joy.

Great-Granny gave him anything he asked for.

"Great-Granny, you’re the best! I love you the most!" the little fellow said.

"Hehe." Granny smiled and gently pinched the little fellow’s nose. Old people always love a sweet-talker. "My sweet great-grandson, you’re so sweet, as if your mouth is coated in honey. Great-Granny loves it."

"Great-Granny, I want to eat beggar’s chicken right now," the little fellow whined playfully, squirming his chubby body in Granny’s arms as his hungry eyes turned toward the newly built kitchen.

"Buy, buy, buy. I’ll buy it for you," Granny said with a chuckle.

She only promised to buy it but made no move. The little fellow wasn’t having it. Just then, Xu Chunyan came out with an enamel mug and respectfully handed it to Granny with both hands. "Buy what?" she asked curiously.

"Great-Granny is going to buy me beggar’s chicken!" Xiao You announced loudly.

Xu Chunyan couldn’t help but inwardly rejoice. ’My son is really something else.’ Granny was a notorious tightwad. Xu Chunyan didn’t know how Granny treated her other grandchildren, but at any rate, she was stingy toward her father-in-law’s children.

That wasn’t just true for the children of his deceased wife—Granny treated Qiao Yanqiu’s children the same. She squeezed them all equally, only ever taking and never giving.

"Xiao You, hurry and get down. You’re too chubby. Don’t crowd your great-granny," Xu Chunyan said, putting on a stern face.

The little fellow really didn’t like the smell that clung to his great-granny, so he was more than happy to obey his mom.

"My sweet great-grandson, don’t listen to your mother. Great-Granny likes you crowding her." Granny took a sip of the sweet water, handed the enamel mug to Xu Chunyan, hugged the little fellow’s chubby body, and planted another smooch on his little cheek.

"Granny, if you spoil him like this, you’ll spoil him rotten," Xu Chunyan said, feigning concern.

"You spoil him more than I do." Granny’s single sentence left Xu Chunyan speechless. She waved her hand. "Alright, enough dawdling. My sweet great-grandson wants beggar’s chicken. You go buy it for him."

Xu Chunyan raised an eyebrow. ’Granny’s actually telling me to go buy it? Fine, I’ll go, but she’ll have to give me the money. Surely she doesn’t expect me to pay for it out of my own pocket. When one tightwad meets another, we’ll see who has the upper hand.’

"Granny, the beggar’s chicken at the local food shop is all sold out by this time," Xu Chunyan said.

"If the food shop here is sold out, don’t you know enough to check other ones?" Granny shot Xu Chunyan a look.

"But..."

"Enough with the ’buts’," Granny cut Xu Chunyan off. "So slow and hesitant at your age. Your son wants to eat beggar’s chicken, and I’m an old woman. Are you expecting me to go buy it for him? With these old arms and legs, what if I fall? Will you take responsibility for that?"
