Chapter 364 Accident (1)_1
Chapter 364 Accident (1)_1
A military Humvee was already waiting at the gates of the large courtyard. Just as a few figures had settled into the vehicle, the anxious figure of Shangguan’s elderly matriarch chased after them.
"Old man, where are you going?"
"We’re going out to clear our minds. From today on, you reflect by yourself. Whenever you figure things out and come to understand, we will naturally return," Shangguan Zhi said without even glancing at her, his tone cold but resolute.
"Youyou, the college entrance exam is coming up. If you take her away like this, what if it affects her performance? It would be better for her to review at home."
"No need to review; I can still score full marks," Shangguan You interrupted the elderly Shangguan matriarch nonchalantly.
"Mom, we’re leaving. Whoever you want to bring back to live with you, do so. Whoever you want to live with, go ahead," Shangguan Hao said somberly, glanced at the elderly Shangguan matriarch’s unpleasant expression, waved his hand, and the driver drove off towards the main road.
The elderly Shangguan matriarch’s hands were tightly clenched together. Had she really made a mistake? Everyone, even her own biological son, was now leaving her. She stood dazedly at the entrance of the military compound, watching the car disappear from her view, until Shangguan Rou once again called out sweetly to her grandmother, snapping her out of her daze.
"Grandma, Aunt Zhang sent us back."
"Hmm," the elderly Shangguan matriarch responded indifferently after glancing at the three of them, then walked past them toward the military compound.
"Grandma, aren’t you going to care for me either?"
"I can’t even take care of myself; how am I supposed to take care of you? Wanying was the one who initiated the divorce. Since you’ve agreed to follow her, this place is no longer your home. Go now, and don’t come back here," the elderly Shangguan matriarch paused for a moment, spoke dismissively, and continued walking forward without looking back.
"Grandma," Shangguan Rou stamped her foot, anger welling up inside her.
The elderly Shangguan matriarch, looking at the empty house and the tea on the table that had gone cold, felt a sense of emptiness. Just moments ago, the family had been joyful and harmonious, with parental affection and filial piety, laughter and songs. But now, as the saying goes, when people are gone, the tea gets cold.
With a creak, Aunt Zhang carried a few pieces of Shangguan You’s clothing down from upstairs. Noticing the elderly Shangguan matriarch, she glanced at her coldly, passed by without a word, and ignored her completely.
"Aunt Zhang, are you leaving too?" the elderly Shangguan matriarch called out to Aunt Zhang, who was heading toward the front door. Would this place have only her left?
"Old Madam, sometimes pride can’t be eaten as food. You can’t just want dignity and forsake sustenance. What’s done is done; you need to look ahead and not cling to the past. Also, you can’t be too swayed by others. Since you always consider others before yourself, even your own biological son and granddaughter can’t compare to an ingrate. If you can still speak so righteously and justify making the people closest to you feel chilled and pained, I really have to question whether your son bears the Shangguan surname or the Li surname," Aunt Zhang said coldly, then left with large strides without looking back.
In the entire villa, only the elderly Shangguan matriarch was left, sitting forlornly on the sofa, her expression blank and dazed.
Having just arrived home, without even warming her seat, they were leaving again. In the car, Shangguan You once again sighed that her time was indeed very busy, and she had so much to do. She had wanted to visit Li Lan and Zhong Mingyang when she had the time, but now she had none.
Looking at her silent family, Shangguan You exchanged a glance with Shangguan Qing, and they both chose to remain silent. It didn’t matter where their grandfather and the others went; she would follow regardless.
TRING! TRING! A pleasant cellphone ringtone suddenly sounded. Shangguan You’s body stiffened involuntarily. She had not expected that she and Li Lan were so in tune; just as she thought of her, her call came through.
"Girl, answer the phone. What are you spacing out for?" Shangguan Qing’s words made Shangguan You chuckle, and she quickly pressed the answer button. Before she could speak, Li Lan’s voice came through, "Youyou, something happened here. If you have time, come over." Li Lan’s voice carried a rare urgency and impatience, and the cacophony in the background made Shangguan You frown.
"Youyou, come quickly, it’s important," Zhong Mingyang’s usually mild voice grew sharp as he snatched the phone away.
In the several months since Li Lan and Zhong Mingyang arrived in Beijing, although they usually called her to hang out, they had never shown such agitation.
"Alright, once I finish handling things here, I’ll be there. I won’t forget. Any other time, I might not come, but today is your birthday. I’ll definitely be there," Shangguan You said with a smile. Hearing her words, Zhong Mingyang’s breath tightened; the young lady had matters to attend to.
"Okay, I’ll be there by six tonight. For your birthday, I’ll be there," Shangguan You hung up the phone, the smile on her face slightly stiff. The uniform stares from her family members left her feeling somewhat scared. Thankfully, the quality of her phone was good; aside from her own voice, her family couldn’t hear any sound from the other side, otherwise she wouldn’t know what to say.
"Girl, is it your friend’s birthday?"
"Yes, tonight at six. Brother Qing, you’ll come with me, right? My friend is very pretty," Shangguan You nodded and continued.
"Girl, you go by yourself. Be careful. I have something for Qing to do tonight," Shangguan Qing was about to reply when Shangguan Zhi’s voice came out deep and heavy.
"Girl, be safe. If anything happens, remember to call back," Shangguan Hao said as he touched Shangguan You’s hair, his face full of affection. It seemed like the recent displeasure had been forgotten by everyone.
"Girl, you’re not so young anymore. Should you meet a suitable boyfriend, remember to bring him home. Don’t keep him hidden outside. Whatever you do, your aunt will support you," Liu Ruoling said softly.
"Yes, girl, not only does your aunt agree, but I support you too," Shangguan Yu joined in jokingly. Shangguan Hao harrumphed loudly, but his expression turned complex as if recalling something, and in the end, he said no more.
