Chapter 244: Do You Regret It?

Chapter 244: Do You Regret It?

In moments of life and death, people sometimes summon strength beyond the ordinary. Bai Qingqing truly managed to slip away without being noticed by a single soul, vanishing into the forest like a wisp of mist, then taking off at a full sprint with her heart pounding in her chest.

She didn’t want to be a burden to anyone. If she could just find a safe place to hide and wait out the danger, she would return once things had calmed down.

Even in her panic, Bai Qingqing didn’t lose her sense of direction. She only knew one thing: stay away from the killers, and she might survive.

Suddenly, her ears caught a faint sound. Instinct took over—she immediately crouched behind a cover of brush, holding her breath and freezing in place.

Not long after, distant voices floated toward her, muffled and indistinct, but their meaning hit her like a hammer.

“Don’t let Ning Yan get away! After him!”

“He won’t make it. The cliff is just ahead—and he’s been poisoned. He’s as good as dead today!”

The voices were far off, but they shattered her composure. Her blood ran cold. Thought fled. She scrambled to her feet, stumbling and flailing as she bolted toward the cliffside.

Low-hanging branches tore thin scratches across her hands and arms, but she didn’t feel a thing. All she could think was how useless she was—why couldn’t she run faster?

Then, all at once, a fierce gust slammed into her from behind. Something tightened around her waist, lifting her right off the ground. The only sound in her ears was the roar of wind.

She nearly fainted from fright, but then turned her head and saw Ning Yan’s face. Everything else disappeared. Choking back sobs, she cried out, “You’ve been poisoned? Where are you hurt? Don’t worry about me—just run! They’re heading toward the cliff!”

Ning Yan held her as he moved with effortless speed, as if carrying nothing at all—though his expression was far from reassuring. “Why are you here? Didn’t I tell you to leave with Mu Shu?”

“I came on my own. That’s not important now. Put me down and run—those people won’t let you go.”

Seeing that he paid her no mind, Bai Qingqing grew increasingly anxious. “You won’t be able to run fast carrying me. Are you hurt? Listen to me, I—”

“Quiet.”

A strange smile tugged at the corner of Ning Yan’s lips as his gaze drifted into the distance. “It’s too late for all that now.”

Only then did Bai Qingqing realize they were at the edge of a cliff. Her head spun, and she instinctively grabbed hold of his robe. “I told you they were coming this way! Why did you still come here?”

Ning Yan set her down and narrowed his eyes at the approaching forest, where shadowy figures had already begun to emerge. He turned his head slightly. “I told you to do as you were told, but you wouldn’t listen. And now look—doomed to die with me. Any regrets?”

Bai Qingqing turned pale. She glanced back at the cliff’s edge and her legs nearly gave out. The drop was bottomless, swallowed by a thick white mist. There was no way back.

“I… If I tell them I’m the legitimate daughter of the Duke of Ying, maybe they’ll change targets and go after me instead. Could you take that chance to break through and survive?”

Ning Yan froze for a moment, then reached out and tousled her hair with surprising force, turning her neatly coiled bun into a complete mess. “Only you would come up with something like that. Even if you said it, they wouldn’t believe you. And even if they did, do you think they'd let you go just because of who you are? Once they’re done with me, who you are won’t matter. You think you could escape?”

Bai Qingqing’s eyes reddened as she stared in horror at the murderous figures leaping from the trees, each one radiating deadly intent.

Then she heard Ning Yan’s voice beside her: “But don’t worry. Do you really think I’d ever let them lay a hand on you?”

In the next instant, something tightened around her waist. Her balance vanished. She fell into Ning Yan’s arms—and together, they plunged off the cliff.
