Chapter 451: Chain Reaction
Chapter 451: Chain Reaction
The Meson was undoubtedly extremely powerful. Even under the siege of the damaged and not yet fully repaired Radiance, along with nearly three thousand other ships of various classes, it still handled the situation with ease. Though at a disadvantage, it showed not the slightest sign of defeat.
The two sides were clashing fiercely. Under such circumstances, the destroyed Guardian Civilization starships did not even have time to explode before they were dragged off by shattered spacetime to destinations unknown.
This battle outside the star system did not draw Xiao Yu’s attention. First, because the distance was too great; second, because the battle was simply too quiet.
More than a day had passed since Xiao Yu first noticed movement from the Guardian Civilization fleet. During this day and more, Xiao Yu had steered this planet into a suitable orbit and, despite interference from those Guardian Civilization warriors, had barely maneuvered the Neutron War Star into the proper position.
Now, what remained was a single order from Xiao Yu.
Xiao Yu gave that order.
“Planetary engines, full power… Ram into this white dwarf. Become one with this white dwarf…” Xiao Yu muttered as he piloted the planet, which was about the size of Earth, toward the white dwarf.
Tens of thousands of blue light bands appeared within this dim binary system, as if performing a dance of death. These light bands were generally over one hundred thousand kilometers long, and as the power rose or fell, and the emission directions shifted, the bands would also change direction, drifting as if blown by the wind.
Such was the tremendous might of the Planetary engine. The abundant matter on this world provided powerful, ample energy for these engines, allowing Xiao Yu to use them without restraint. This planet was destined for destruction, and Xiao Yu’s aim was to destroy it. So when he activated the Planetary engines, he showed not the slightest mercy and had no concern for what damage the engines might inflict on the planet.
In fact, the very instant the tens of thousands of Planetary engines started up, the planet’s crustal structure suffered severe damage. This world had a stratification similar to Earth’s. In that moment, under the force of the tremendous thrust, its plate structure immediately fractured like a dropped mirror.Fractured plates meant intense geological activity. Xiao Yu saw countless fissures appear across the planet, each at least several hundred kilometers long and tens of kilometers deep. The world cracked and heaved. Mountains were pushed flat, while countless peaks suddenly thrust up from the plains.
What was underway now was the final adjustment before fully entering the trajectory. This work had been completed two hours earlier. The planet had already entered the orbit Xiao Yu had planned. All Xiao Yu needed to do now was fire the Planetary engines at maximum power and push it straight forward.
The white dwarf continued to rotate quietly. It was not directly ahead of the planet’s current orbital path. But that did not matter. Xiao Yu had long since precisely calculated its motion and gravitational influence and derived the final result from this series of complex data.
The planet began to advance. Its rotation and revolution had been canceled out by Xiao Yu using the Planetary engines during the preparation phase. Now it always presented one face toward the white dwarf, as if locked by gravity.
Behind it, tens of thousands of blue light bands shot straight into the sky, stretching all the way into the void of space. The observation equipment Xiao Yu had set on the planet’s surface witnessed this wondrous scene.
This was the side facing away from the white dwarf, so even the white dwarf’s faint light could not reach here. The nearest star lay several light-years away, so the sky here was pitch-black. With no atmospheric refraction, the sky was profoundly, immaculately black. Specks of starlight dotted this dark sky, looking very beautiful.
But in the very next moment, this calm was shattered. Tens of thousands of blue light bands suddenly flared, like ignited fireworks. At first they were only tiny points of light, then all at once their momentum swelled, shooting straight up into the sky. Over a hundred thousand light bands turned this dark world into a jungle of light.
The scene was exceedingly beautiful. Under the illumination of these light bands, the world here became full daylight, but it was a blue daylight. The entire world was bathed in blue beneath these blue bands of light.
Hidden within this beautiful and awe-inspiring spectacle was a profound killing intent. These Planetary engines built on the planet’s surface, under the force of powerful recoil, had their heads driven deep into the ground, and countless small mounds rose around them.
The planet’s crust was completely destroyed. This mighty thrust, in accordance with the laws of mechanics, ultimately spread throughout the entire planet and affected the whole world. This force was steadily penetrating deeper, gradually influencing the mantle and the core. Under the immense pressure, magma inside the planet began to surge along the fractured stratification, and volcanoes began to erupt.
But the Planetary engines paid no heed to any of this, and Xiao Yu spared no thought for how immense the damage he had inflicted upon this planet was. Xiao Yu had only one goal, push it forward to ram into this white dwarf.
The planet’s nearly spherical shape had begun to flatten. This was a phenomenon bound to occur under tremendous acceleration. The planet’s forward speed was slowly increasing, rising rapidly from one hundred meters per second to one hundred kilometers per second, then to one thousand kilometers per second, two thousand kilometers per second…
The Planetary engines kept working without pause, continually imparting forward thrust to the planet. In fact, as long as these Planetary engines were not damaged, they would continue to work. The faster this planet traveled, the greater the kinetic energy it carried, and the greater the change it could bring to this white dwarf.
After the planet had advanced a certain distance, the white dwarf’s gravity began to exert a powerful effect. Its gravity also started accelerating the planet. With the white dwarf’s gravity pulling from ahead and Xiao Yu’s Planetary engines pushing from behind, the combined force drove the planet’s speed up another notch.
At this moment, the planet was less than ten million kilometers from the white dwarf.
Its leading side finally began to bulge. This was the consequence of the immense gravity of the white dwarf. Seen from the surface, it was as if countless peaks tens of thousands to one million meters tall suddenly rose on level ground. Moreover, these peaks continued to increase in height.
It was finally stretched into a long shape. The white dwarf’s gravity tore it apart, and it changed from a complete planet into a swarm of asteroids. Among this swarm were still-glowing magma, sharp-edged rubble, and gigantic chunks of rock hundreds or thousands of kilometers in diameter.
All of these slammed toward the white dwarf like a torrent of artillery shells.
The white dwarf immediately began to brighten, brighter and brighter, until it surpassed even the Sun in brilliance. This meant an increase in luminosity by thousands to tens of thousands of times. But this was only a beginning. The main act was still to come.
Just as a hydrogen bomb needs an atomic bomb to detonate it, with the atomic bomb merely serving as the prelude to the hydrogen bomb’s explosion, the immense energy released by this planet’s impact on the white dwarf was only a prelude. Under the influence of this countless tons of matter, the white dwarf as a whole was affected. Its orbital path changed as Xiao Yu had anticipated, and the distance between it and the neutron star shortened by more than one hundred million kilometers.
In earlier operations, Xiao Yu had been deliberately altering the orbital paths of these two stars, deliberately shortening the distance between them. With this latest reduction of over one hundred million kilometers, the distance between them was now less than three hundred million kilometers.
The white dwarf began to move along the orbit Xiao Yu had preset. This orbit was unstable, a road leading to death. If it continued along this path, the distance between the white dwarf and the neutron star would grow shorter and shorter, and their speed orbiting each other would grow faster and faster.
The final result could only be a collision.
On Planet One, those Planetary engines were also operating at full power, spraying bright blue bands of light and pushing the planet to retreat, then retreat farther still. Xiao Yu had no interest in trying to withstand the spillover of this terrifying catastrophe. Avoiding the brunt was the sensible course. By now, Xiao Yu had pushed this gigantic shield back by one billion kilometers and was still retreating. It was estimated that by the time the impact occurred, Xiao Yu would have withdrawn to a distance of four billion kilometers.
The distance between the white dwarf and the neutron star continued to shrink. At this point, their collision no longer required Xiao Yu to push it along. Unless someone deliberately piloted the Neutron War Star to flee, no one could prevent the impact. And clearly, Xiao Yu would not do that. The Guardian Civilization warriors inside the Neutron War Star did not know the situation outside and would not do that either.
No one would come to stop the final collision. As the distance between the two shrank, their speed orbiting each other grew faster and faster, faster and faster…
The final collision was right before their eyes. In a little over thirty hours, these two stellar bodies would crash together and merge into a black hole.
