REBIRTH : Chasing The Limelight

Chapter 110: Meeting with Mrs Vale.

Chapter 110: Meeting with Mrs Vale.

Elara’s brows lifted at his question and she turned to look at him calmly.

Well, there’s no need to explain anything.

"You would have found out sooner or later," she said simply, her fingers still resting on the keys.

"Oh..." Carris muttered after watching her for a few seconds. Then a small smile spread across his lips as he nodded repeatedly. "I see..."

They did not speak much after that.

Soon, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, stood up, and gave her a small wave before walking out.

Elara did not stay much longer either since Harris was coming. She went upstairs, freshened up again, and changed her clothes. After that, she sat on the bed scrolling through her phone.

Even though she had wanted nothing more than to return and rest while at the site, sleep refused to come now that she was finally in the room.

At exactly six, a knock sounded on the door. Elara stood up and opened it. As expected, it was Harris. He came right on time.

"Ah, Miss Veyne," he greeted with a bow. "You’re ready."

Elara nodded in reply. She went back in and picked up her phone, then walked out with him. When they got into the car, Harris quickly opened the passenger door for her. Since he always did that, she did not react and simply got in.

Not long after the car started moving, Harris’s phone started ringing. He glanced at the screen and a smile instantly appeared on his face. Without hesitation, he placed the call on speaker and set the phone on the dashboard.

An annoyed female voice came from the other end immediately. "Seriously? Why are you doing all these? My life is a total mess because of you!"

Harris blinked with a slightly opened mouth, then he smiled like he had just received a compliment. "I was hoping you’d call."

Elara slowly turned her head from the window and stared at him from the corner of her eyes.

"I’m not joking here, why were you hovering outside the ward this morning like a thief? I thought you weren’t jobless" the woman snapped sarcastically.

"I’m not a thief." Harris said in a calm voice, which sounded obviously practiced. "And If I were, I wouldn’t be loitering in a hallway... I’ld have smuggled you out of that ward before the other nurses even noticed you were gone."

The phone went quiet. Then, the lady’s voice came again more quietly. "Well.. that’ll be the last thing you steal on this earth."

"Then it’s worth it," Harris said easily. "Not a bad way to end my criminal career."

The lady sighed from the other end. "You know what? I don’t even have the energy to continue arguing with you anymore..."

Harris glanced sideways at Elara, then lowered his voice a little. "That’s sweet of you. But I’d prefer if you didn’t get fed up of me so quickly."

The lady sighed for the umpteenth time. "Whatever... stop showing up at my department!" she said in a tired voice. "If I see you there again, I’m calling the security. No– forget security, I’m calling the police!"

Harris paused for a second, then nodded slowly as if considering it. "Okay, I’ve heard you."

From where Elara is sitting, she finally lowered her head, her head turned sideways. She could barely prevent the fleeting smile on her face.

"Listen carefully," the woman said at last. "Stay away from me. And please... stop appearing everywhere I go!"

Harris’s smile widened a little, but before he could say anything more. The call ended abruptly and silence filled the car. Not long after, he turned his head sideways... and his gaze met Elara’s instantly.

His smile stiffened and he quickly turned his attention back to the road ahead.

Elara looked at him for a long second, then spoke calmly, though her eyes still carried a trace of amusement.

"If she starts carrying something to hit you with next time," she said, "don’t be surprised."

Harris blinked. Then he cleared his throat, still looking straight ahead with a cool expression, as if nothing had happened.

"Of course she won’t do that." he said seriously. "You don’t quite understand something. She really likes me but she’s just pretending not to."

Elara nodded and went quiet, turning her head back to the glass. Meanwhile, her shoulders were already shaking from suppressed laughter.

However, her expression hardened as they neared the Vale mansion. She kept wondering what Mrs Vale wanted to say to her.

Finally, Harris drove into the vicinity and parked the car. Elara quickly got down before he could come around to open the door for her again.

Harris noticed it and flashed a smile at her. "You’re really too humble," he said warmly, then nodded. "I’ll have to go now. When you’re leaving, just call my number."

Elara nodded and walked toward the door while Harris drove away. When she reached the entrance, she hesitated for a second before pressing the doorbell.

Not long after, the door opened and a woman in uniform peeked out. But when she saw Elara, she opened the door fully and moved aside. "Come in."

Elara nodded and stepped inside. Once she entered, her eyes quietly scanned the familiar space. As if the maid had noticed her reaction, she quickly pointed to a side door. "She’s there."

"Thanks," Elara muttered and walked toward it, burying her nervousness deep within herself. As she opened the door, she spotted Mrs Vale immediately.

The room looked more like a flower room. It was filled with large pots and arrangements of fresh flowers.

Mrs Vale was standing in front of an oversized flower pot, carefully arranging the flowers in it.

Elara stepped in and closed the door gently.

"You’re here. That was quick," Mrs Vale said without turning around.

Elara gave a soft, "Hm," in reply and stood patiently near the door.

When Mrs Vale was finally done, she turned around and met Elara’s eyes directly.

Elara held her gaze. She instinctively wanted to look away at first, but she controlled herself and stayed still, her expression calm and simple.

"Wow," Mrs Vale said suddenly, raising the corner of her lips. "You’re even more beautiful than the last time we met."

Elara’s expression went stiff for a brief second. Then she forced a small smile.

"Thank you," she muttered.
