Chapter 514: Chapter 431: Grand Drama of the Wealthy Elite
Long Wu and Heizi were sitting together, with Su Meng and Mrs. Su next to them. The people at the table were mostly their buddies, some of whom Leng Mochen wasn’t even familiar with. Everyone knew about his amnesia, so no one brought up pointless things.
Heizi leaned over and exchanged a few whispered words with Leng Mochen. Li Si could only see Leng Mochen silently nodding in response. The atmosphere was quite noisy, so she couldn’t make out what these two were saying.
Su Meng’s pregnant belly was even bigger than Li Si’s had been when she was due to deliver, but her complexion was great. She looked fair and chubby, and Mrs. Su sitting beside her no longer had those worried lines on her face. She’d become cheerful and loved to smile.
"Your baby’s gonna weigh at least ten pounds when it’s born, right?" Li Si couldn’t help but repeat this line again.
The last time she’d seen Su Meng, she’d already grown a few circles bigger. Now, even her face was round, and her double chin was obvious!
Su Meng laughed and patted Li Si’s shoulder, "Probably not! But I am definitely over-nourished! The doctor advises me to eat smaller meals more often, eat reasonably, and exercise more. By the time I deliver, I don’t think I’ll have a choice but to go for a C-section! Sisi, if it weren’t for my current situation, I would’ve joined in with the fun today and blocked the door too! Don’t hold it against me!"
Li Si rolled her eyes at her, "What are you saying? We’re this close; do we have to make stuff so formal? Your Brother Wu represents you, doesn’t he? One per family is enough, isn’t it? Don’t be like Shasha and Xu Er piling on people; I think my husband would lose it!"
Su Meng covered her mouth, laughing, "Haha! I’ve already heard about it! I still have to say congratulations though, Sisi! Wishing the two of you love everlasting!"
"Thank you! Same to you guys too!" Li Si replied and winked at her deliberately.
"Let’s all strive for that! Haha!" Su Meng had become much more cheerful and enjoyed laughing recently. Even though pregnancy had made her gain quite a lot of weight and changed her appearance, Li Si thought she was at her happiest right now!
Mrs. Su smiled at Li Si and said, "Sisi, sweetie, Auntie wishes you a happy marriage! And may you and your husband have a baby by this time next year!"
Mrs. Leng was absolutely delighted by that and kept nodding along. Older folks really take joy in seeing the family grow.
Back then, if not for her own health issues—and the fact that Qiankai was often abroad—she would’ve wanted to have more kids herself!
"Oh, Auntie, you forgot! I had a C-section; I need to wait three years before I can have another!"
Mrs. Leng heard Li Si’s words and sighed inwardly. True. How could she have forgotten that it wasn’t a natural birth back then!
If only they’d found a way for a natural birth, how great would that have been? Two kids in three years!
"I really forgot about that!" Mrs. Su noticed the look of displeasure on Mrs. Leng’s face and felt terribly embarrassed. She hadn’t expected her casual remark to cause trouble for Li Si! She knew all too well how difficult the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law dynamic could be, looking at her own daughter’s situation. How could she be so careless at her age?
"But we’ll definitely have another! Buding’s too lonely as an only child!"
Upon hearing the second half of that sentence, Mrs. Leng’s mood instantly brightened!
As long as they had the intention, that was enough. Better than those daughters-in-law elsewhere who refused to have kids just because they were afraid of losing their figure or aging quickly!
"You’re all good kids! Our Meng Meng has been so meticulous with this pregnancy. She even plans on getting her health back in shape after this baby so she can have a second when this one grows up!" Mrs. Su didn’t dare say anything more, instead steering the topic back to her own family.
Li Si gave Su Meng a sympathetic glance. Su Meng had complained to her plenty of times over the phone, saying that Mrs. Su was practically raising her like a pig—six meals a day, not counting fruit and supplements.
But it wasn’t hard to understand Mrs. Su’s mindset. The gap between her family and Long Wu’s family was immense. If the first child turned out to be a healthy son, Su Meng’s status in Long Wu’s family would undoubtedly be more secure.
By the time Li Si reached the tables occupied by her high school classmates, her emotions had finally stabilized. At least the people here, even if they only seemed vaguely familiar, were once people she’d known and spent time with.
Wang Man and Zhang Weicheng stood up with the other classmates, raising their glasses to toast Li Si. After taking a sip, Leng Mochen politely nodded at them and moved on to the next table.
After recognizing the faces at 80 tables, Li Si couldn’t help but feel that Su Meng’s earlier advice had been pure gold. Her face was smiling stiffly, and thank goodness she’d picked red wedge heels for her wedding shoes.
She seized the window of time between changing outfits and sending off the guests to finally rest for a moment.
Hurriedly, she told Bai Shasha, Jiang Fan, Liu Xiaole, and the other girls from Simeng’s group who’d been shadowing her to go eat quickly. She didn’t want her own lack of food to stop them from eating too.
In the end, they worked out a plan to take turns so that Li Si wouldn’t be left alone in the resting room. Liu Xiaole offered to stay first, letting the others go ahead.
After they’d eaten, they’d take turns swapping shifts!
Bai Shasha and Jiang Fan joked before leaving that they’d bring back something easy for her to eat.
Li Si sprawled on the soft couch in the resting room, wearing her newly changed red corduroy cheongsam. She felt utterly comfortable.
Her face hurt from smiling, and her legs and feet ached.
Liu Xiaole chuckled at her, "Sisi! Turns out getting married is a real workout, huh?"
Li Si made a face while lying down, "Figured it out now, eh? Xiao Le! When it’s your turn, you’ll go through this too. So cherish the good times before you’re married!"
"For me, marriage is still a long way off—who knows when! Let’s not talk about that on your big day. Hey, are you ready for our school defense on the 20th? Got your thesis prepped and everything?" Liu Xiaole joked, steering the conversation elsewhere.
"Why are you intentionally stirring the pot? It’s supposed to be my happy day and you bring that up! You’re doing this on purpose!" Li Si pouted and mock-pointed at her through the air. For a moment, the tension lifted. After all, the journey from meeting, knowing, and loving someone to ultimately tying the knot was far from easy.
To make things more challenging, An Zhengran’s mother wasn’t the kind of person who’d be easy to deal with. Liu Xiaole’s road ahead wasn’t going to be smooth.
But that’s something nobody could help with—everyone has to walk their own path, tasting the wine they’ve brewed themselves.
Liu Xiaole beamed brightly, "Haha, busted! But seriously, Sisi, I’m so envious of you! Spill the secrets someday, won’t you? How did you make happiness look so easy?"
"Oh, come on! Easy, my foot! Do you know how much we’ve been through to get here? I’m exhausted and not saying any more! By the way, what’s Liu Jiaqi been up to lately?"
Ever since her divorce from Leng Mohao after that video incident, Liu Jiaqi had seemingly disappeared from sight. It was like she’d vanished into thin air!
Recently, when Li Si and Liu Xiaole met up, it was always with a group of people, so this question had been hard to bring up.
Now felt like the perfect time, with just the two of them here, for her curiosity to win out.
Liu Xiaole’s face lit up with schadenfreude, "Oh, man! You didn’t ask, but I’ve been itching to tell you! Her family’s going through a crazy time right now! Remember my aunt—you’ve met her, right? Super sharp-tongued and tough? If it hadn’t been for their scheming, our family wouldn’t have ended up like this. But let’s not dwell on the past; it’s pointless!
Turns out my uncle looked calm and steady, but he’s no good either! Recently, my aunt caught him with a secret mistress!"
"Oh my gosh! And then?" Li Si sat up excitedly, imagining her aunt going full-on berserk. Wouldn’t she have ripped the mistress apart? She could almost picture a dramatic showdown between the wife and the third party!
Liu Xiaole gave her a mysterious smile and shook her head knowingly, "Nope! You’d never guess—the mistress didn’t demand any titles but gave birth to my uncle’s eldest son, who’s already in his early teens and attending middle school! Now my aunt doesn’t dare make too big a fuss, worried the mistress might retaliate and force my uncle to divorce her!
Liu Jiaqi, after her divorce, had gone off to clear her mind for a while. She only just returned home and ran straight into this mess! Her family’s rich, sure, but before that boy showed up, everything would’ve surely been hers! Now, well, who knows!"
"This is totally a wealthy family soap opera!" Li Si commented, utterly engrossed. It was like it came straight out of a TV drama!
"Totally! My mom keeps saying this is karma! That people just shouldn’t do heartless things! My dad doesn’t want to hear it. The worst part is my grandmother! Turns out the old lady knew all along! She’d met the mistress and the boy ages ago! I suspected something back when she’d always complain there were only girls in the family—that the Liu family would end up without descendants.
Later, she stopped mentioning it. Turns out she already knew there was a grandson!"
Li Si was completely speechless, "Your grandma’s moral compass is seriously messed up!"
Liu Xiaole sat down beside Li Si, speaking earnestly, "Honestly, Sisi, I feel like mother-in-laws all have similar mindsets to some extent. So when you had a son, I felt relieved for you!"
Li Si replied with mock seriousness, "Listening to you right now, I feel deeply validated in having had my son!"
"Haha!" Both of them burst into laughter!
Just then, there was a soft knock at the door from outside, cutting their laughter short. "Who’s there?" Liu Xiaole rubbed her sore cheeks from laughing and hurried to open the door.
