Chapter 1071 - 1060: The Unkind Stepmother
"Xiao Xu, heading to your tutoring class again? Oh, how did you get hurt on your face?" Fu Lei bumped into Fang Xu in the neighborhood and casually asked.
Fang Xu’s eyes darted around a bit before he muttered, "I was disobedient, so Aunt Ye hit me."
"She hit you?" Fu Lei raised his voice, "Hit you this badly? When did she do it?"
"Just now." Fang Xu replied and quickly walked away, "I have to go to class now, goodbye, Uncle Fu."
Fu Lei felt something was off. How could Ye Qiu, who loved Fang Bingwen so much, hit Fang Xu? She wouldn’t even have time to flatter him. Thinking this, he surprisingly bumped into her at the entrance of the neighborhood.
"You’re not at home? Just returned from outside?" he asked, puzzled.
Ye Qiu looked bewildered: "Yeah, I’m usually not home during the day, what’s up?"
"Oh, it’s nothing." Fu Lei awkwardly smiled and walked a few steps before calling her back, "There’s something I need to remind you of."
"What is it?"
"I ran into Xiao Xu when I came out just now, and he has an injury on his face."
"Injury? How did he get injured? Is it serious?"
"You don’t know?" Fu Lei became even more curious.
"I remember when he went to school with his dad in the morning, he was fine, and all day I didn’t get a call from any teacher. Why would I know about his injury? Mr. Fu, do you know where Xiao Xu went? Why would he still go out if he’s hurt?"
"Now that’s odd." Fu Lei shook his head, "Because when I asked Xiao Xu, he said you were the one who hit him."
"Me?" Ye Qiu was stunned, "I didn’t hit him. If I did, what would I say to his dad? Did he really say that?"
"Yes, which is why I was surprised when I saw you coming back from outside."
Ye Qiu looked visibly upset: "Why would he say that? Even if his mom never contacts him, he’s never forgotten her. But I’ve been genuinely kind to him; whatever other kids have, I’ve never short-changed him. For his future, I’ve exhausted my connections to hire renowned teachers for him. Why would he slander me like this? I even take into account his emotional feelings, never forcing him to change how he calls me, yet why does he still say outside that I’m bad to him?"
Seeing her sorrowful expression and hearing her sad words, Fu Lei didn’t know how to comfort her, so he softly suggested, "Sister-in-law, don’t overthink this. I think you should seriously talk to Bingwen, because if the child is really lying this big outside, then he needs proper guidance."
Ye Qiu wiped her tears as her eyes were red, and her voice choked: "I’m sorry, Mr. Fu, for making you witness such a joke."
"It’s alright, Bingwen and I are both colleagues and classmates, I won’t spread these words."
"Thank you, I’ll treat you to dinner sometime."
Watching Ye Qiu’s desolate silhouette, Fu Lei couldn’t help but feel somewhat wistful, feeling more unjust for her, and increasingly believing Fang Bingwen is a two-faced person.
He’s so smart, yet can’t see his child lying? He most likely condones it, as evident from the last two meals, Fang Xu never respected Ye Qiu, nor did Fang Bingwen reprimand him.
Fang Xu is also ungrateful. Ye Qiu’s good to him, wholeheartedly serving him, outsiders can see it, those renowned teachers; could ordinary people hire them?
"Why do you have such an expression?" coworkers asked curiously as they saw Fu Lei walk into the office, shaking his head and sighing.
Fu Lei let out a heavy sigh and then asked regretfully, "Guess what happened to me just now?"
"What happened? Hurry up and tell us; you’re making it so mysterious."
"On the way out of the neighborhood, I met Bingwen’s son, Xiao Xu. I saw he had an injury on his face, so I asked. Guess what he said?"
"What did he say? Could it be his stepmother hit him?" a coworker jokingly replied.
Fu Lei nodded: "That’s exactly what he said."
The coworkers immediately widened their eyes, asking incredulously, "Really?"
"You can’t believe it, right? But that’s what the child told me."
"It’s hard to believe; isn’t Ye Qiu quite fond of Professor Fang? She seemed like she’d hold him dearly, and she overly flattered Xiao Xu, is it all an act?"
"No, and even stranger things followed: after I parted with Xiao Xu, I immediately bumped into Ye Qiu at the neighborhood gate; she seemed like she just came back from outside."
"And then?"
"Then I casually asked, saying Xiao Xu was injured. She clearly seemed quite anxious and unaware."
"Maybe she pretended to show you!"
"I don’t think so; her eyesight and expression weren’t fake, plus she mentioned she usually isn’t home during the day. When sending Fang Bingwen and Xiao Xu out in the morning, Xiao Xu was fine. If she hit Xiao Xu earlier, given Bingwen’s fondness, wouldn’t he confront her fiercely? But if it happened just now, there wasn’t even time!"
"Your analysis makes sense."
Seeing everyone increasingly interested, Fu Lei continued: "Ye Qiu’s love for Bingwen, we all clearly see it; when pursuing him, it was passionate. After marrying, she humbled herself and started doing household chores; to say it’s a fabricated submissive act, I don’t believe it. A wealthy girl wouldn’t care for this reputation at the cost of hardships."
"Makes sense."
"Therefore, Xiao Xu’s claim about Ye Qiu hitting him, I don’t believe it at all. It’s hundred percent a lie. Last time Ye Qiu treated us, you all saw it, Xiao Xu wasn’t polite to her at all. If Ye Qiu did hit him, would he obediently go to class instead of coming to school to report to Bingwen?"
"But why would he lie about being hit by his stepmother?"
"I don’t know about that, but from this incident, you can see the kid is indeed ungrateful and heartless."
"It’s not just that, it’s downright vicious. Look at what he eats, uses, wears, even the classes he attends; all arranged by his stepmother. Yet he slanders her outside." The coworker concluded, shaking his head disdainfully.
"What makes a six-year-old kid capable of such things?"
"Why else? The adults failed to educate him well. His stepmother evidently doesn’t dare discipline him much, becoming like this probably because of his father."
"Unexpectedly, Professor Fang is liked by both the leaders and students, yet treats his wife poorly behind the scenes."
"I suspect he’s still thinking about his ex-wife; otherwise, why hasn’t he changed his son’s address to her in more than a year?"
"If it’s true, I really feel it’s unfair for Ye Qiu."
"Who wouldn’t agree?"
