Chapter 1060 - 1049: The Unkind Stepmother
Ye Qiu bounced over to Fang Bingwen with a happy face after listening: "Look, I’ve already found out. What do you want to eat? Let’s pick one and go eat!"
"They all sound unhealthy." Fang Bingwen frowned.
"This is a school, and it’s a prestigious one. They shouldn’t be selling stuff with a lot of additives, right?" Ye Qiu retorted quietly.
"But Xiao Xu is here. I don’t want him to eat too many mixed things."
"But there’s still stir-fried meat and stuffed tofu. We can go have this, and Xiao Xu can definitely eat that, right?"
Because her eyes were too bright, and because she took a step back, Fang Bingwen found it hard to refuse. The main reason was that he didn’t have any more excuses to refuse. If he said anything else, Ye Qiu would probably ask him what he usually eats with Xiao Xu, and then how should he answer?
"Okay, we’ll go with your choice and eat at the second canteen."
"Husband, you’re so good to me!" Ye Qiu said while clinging to his arm, though in her heart she was complaining—what does it mean to listen to her? In the end, wasn’t it he who decided? It sounded as if she was very domineering.
After lunch, they took another stroll around the school until Ye Cancan called Ye Qiu, and they drove to Second Brother Ye’s house.
Although it was in the city center, it was an old district. Because several important figures lived here and there was an ancient site, it hadn’t been scheduled for demolition. The Ye Family was a wealthy old local family, so they also had a courtyard in this area.
"Little aunt!" Seeing her, Ye Cancan ran over happily.
Ye Qiu held her in a tight hug and spun around: "Auntie really missed you, little Cancan!"
"Cancan missed little auntie too. Auntie never comes to see me." After catching up, Ye Cancan huffed and pouted at her.
"Oh, little auntie has been busy, right? You have a heavy school load, and my schedule hasn’t adjusted. Little auntie promises that as soon as there’s time, I’ll come play with you, okay?"
"You said it; don’t break your promise again."
"I promise!"
"Hmm, don’t just be coaxing a kid." Second Brother Ye glanced at her, "Also, watch your words and actions in the future; don’t lead my daughter astray."
"Ye Laoer, what do you mean?" Ye Qiu was indignant and started quarreling with Ye Sheng again, "You don’t welcome me at your house, do you? Even if you don’t, Second Sister-in-law and Cancan do."
"Stop twisting my words; where am I not welcoming you? It’s you who makes a fuss and refuses to come." Ye Sheng gritted his teeth.
"Who did I get mad at? Don’t lie with your eyes open!"
"Hey, how did you become so shameless and thick-skinned now?"
"Do you guess I’m shameless and thick-skinned? My skin is so fair and tender, are your eyes blind?"
"Ye Qiu." Fang Bingwen, seeing her engrossed in arguing with Ye Sheng, frowned slightly and spoke in a deep voice.
Almost immediately, Ye Sheng’s expression changed; he was happy to argue with his sister, but what did this brother-in-law have to do with it?
Sensing her husband’s off mood, Fan Ning pulled Fang Xu with a smile: "Xiao Xu has grown taller; come inside and sit." Then she said to Fang Bingwen, "They’re accustomed to this kind of sibling quarrel; don’t mind them, Cancan, take your brother inside to play."
"Okay." Ye Cancan answered cheerfully, also liking the cute Fang Xu, "Brother Fang Xu, should I take you to my room to play, okay? What do you like playing?"
"For you." Fang Xu remained motionless but took out a gift box from his backpack.
Ye Cancan was very pleased: "Is this for me? Thank you, brother. What’s inside? Can I open it now?"
"Returning to you." Fang Xu replied straightforwardly, appearing quite stiff.
"Returning to me? Why say ’return’?" Ye Cancan was puzzled.
"Dad said, you gave me a toy before, so I need to return the favor."
"Brother is too polite. I gave it to you because I like you, and it doesn’t require a return gift."
Fan Ning also laughed from the side: "Exactly, children liking each other, saying things about returning gifts seems too formal."
"I still need to teach him this so he doesn’t take things for granted in the future." Fang Bingwen said very politely; even his smile was a polite formality.
Fan Ning’s enthusiastic smile suddenly became a bit stiff, secretly grumbling that while scholars might be aloof, she also graduated with a doctorate, not like this brother-in-law. They’re family now, why such clean boundaries between kids that it hurts the cousins’ bond?
From the start, Fan Ning felt Fang Bingwen wasn’t suited for the little sister. The little sister, being the youngest in the family, was brought up pampered. If she were to marry, it would be best to find someone who could be accommodating.
However, Fang Bingwen didn’t seem accommodating. Though he appeared very gentle and knowledgeable, it was like he was covered by a veil separating him from the Ye Family, as if the Ye Family were mud, and he was a pure lotus untainted by mud.
Thus, she worried the sister would face grievances after marriage, but for now, the sister seemed happy, blinded by love. Who knows when she’ll see through it, deeply hurt with scars all over.
The husband and the sister had clashed since childhood, but his care for her never diminished; as they say, deep love induces sharp responsibility, so every meeting was filled with quarrels.
However, these quarrels were very cozy, sometimes even making the daughter laugh heartily. Yet Fang Bingwen insisted on curbing the sister and husband’s quarrel, making her feel Fang Bingwen was superficially nice to the sister but actually pushed her away from family.
Luckily, the sister was naive and hadn’t noticed Fang Bingwen’s superficial care.
Fan Ning wanted the sister to enjoy life but didn’t want her to be squandered by someone like Fang Bingwen.
She had two wishes: either the sister should quickly escape the pit that is Fang Bingwen, or Fang Bingwen should genuinely be moved by the sister and sincerely treat her well.
But who knows when that day would come; hopefully, it won’t be too late, and the sister won’t be hurt too deeply.
"Cancan, since your brother brought you a gift, first thank him, and then go play." Fang Bingwen was polite, and Fan Ning turned polite as well, not as enthusiastic as before.
But with Ye Qiu and Ye Sheng, she smiled and lightly scolded: "Why are you standing at the door arguing? Waiting for someone to laugh at you? Ye Sheng, be the older brother and let your sister, go inside and clean up the mahjong table. Big sister and they should be arriving soon; didn’t you say you wanted a showdown?"
"Coming." Ye Sheng agreed, then sneered at Ye Qiu, "Today, I’m determined to defeat you completely."
"If I don’t win away your secret stash, I’m not called Ye Qiu!"
"We’ll see!"
"We’ll see then!"
