Chapter 417 417: Love Each Other, Together Forever (2)_1
This woman... he was always hurting her.
When he left without saying goodbye to join the army years ago, it had hurt her. His departure deprived her of the chance to confess and explain her feelings to him, and it was one of the reasons they had missed out on six years together. When she went to Tibet to find him by herself, in order to make her return to his elder brother's side, he, along with others, had hurt her deeply once again. That time, he had hurt himself to the extreme as well. Finally, when the two had reconciled and sworn vows of love, he had even reapplied for a marriage permit. His marriage application was due to be approved soon, but now... he had hurt her once again.
He barely tried to move when sharp pains immediately shot through his legs. The agony contorted his face, his complexion turned ashen in an instant, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
The pain dragged him back to reality.
He was a disabled man now. He loved her; how could he bear to let her marry someone who was no longer healthy? Without him, he believed, there were better men who could replace him and cherish her well.
"Ruby," Sovia Morris said, her heart aching, as she quickly stepped forward to support Ruby. Ruby's eyes brimmed with tears, but she bravely swallowed them back.
"Marcel, how can you push Ruby away like this? How can you treat her this way? Don't you love her very much? Is this how you're going to hurt the woman you want to protect for a lifetime? Marcel!" Distressed, Sovia Morris also yelled angrily at her son.
Ruby quickly pulled Sovia aside, speaking considerately and with concern, "Auntie, don't blame Marcel. He didn't do it on purpose. I'm fine." Her mother had told her that if she insisted on staying with Marcel, she had to be able to withstand the temperamental outbursts caused by his injuries. Marcel was losing his temper with her now; he might even throw things at her in the future. She had to learn to endure it.
"I did it on purpose! If I could walk, I'd throw you out!" Marcel added fuel to the fire.
"Fine, then I'll just wait for you to throw me out!" Ruby stood one meter from the hospital bed, looking at Marcel. Her previous submissiveness was gone as she taunted him. She even said disdainfully, "Look at you. A grown man who can't even walk that one meter, who doesn't even dare to walk anymore. How are you going to throw me out? If you've got what it takes, then focus on your recovery, cooperate with the doctor's rehabilitation, and stand up again. Then you can throw me out. I'll be standing right here, waiting for you to throw me!"
Ignoring Sovia Morris's slightly shocked expression, she walked forward, took out a tissue, and began to wipe the cold sweat from Marcel's forehead.
"Don't touch me!"
Ruby's rebuttal made Marcel realize she was trying to provoke him, hoping he would rally. But that slim chance of standing up again... he was afraid he wouldn't succeed...
"I am touching you. What are you going to do about it?" Ruby's stubborn, tenacious nature surfaced as she firmly wiped the cold sweat from Marcel's forehead.
Marcel tensed, freezing like a stone. His pain-filled eyes locked onto the beautiful round face so close to his. His heart ached when he noticed her face was no longer round. For his sake, she had lost so much weight in just a few days. Her large, bright eyes, though still luminous, couldn't hide her deep fatigue; they were now ringed with dark circles.
Marcel snapped back to his senses and immediately pushed Ruby away, cursing, "Shameless!"
"Marcel," Ruby chuckled softly, her voice gentle.
She knew then that he still loved her; he just had his hang-ups. He was probably afraid of being a burden to her, so he'd changed his attitude, trying to drive her away. How could she possibly leave? They had finally reunited after so much difficulty. Even if he really threw her out, she wouldn't leave. If he wanted her to leave his world, he'd have to kill her with his own hands!
"No matter how you treat me, no matter what happens to you, I will never leave you. I love you, and I will love only you for the rest of my life. If you don't want me and throw me out, then I'll live alone. I'd rather be alone for the rest of my life than betray your love. Marcel, I know how much you're hurting inside. You're such a proud man, a true man of integrity.
"You love your military career, and now that you're injured and can't return to your unit, I know you're more heartbroken than anyone. Vent all your pain on me; I'm not afraid. I can take it. But, Marcel, I want to tell you that even if you have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life, I don't mind, and I won't feel like you're a burden. Since we love each other, I will stay by your side forever."
Ruby earnestly confessed her feelings to Marcel, reassuring him that he didn't need to worry about being a burden. Whether he could stand again or not, she was committed to him.
"Ruby..." Marcel's expression finally softened. With a heart full of anguish and love, he forcefully pulled Ruby into his embrace, holding her tightly.
He truly feared losing her! But he also truly didn't want to be a burden to her. Her words had moved him so deeply that he could no longer bring himself to be cruel to her.
"Ruby, you deserve a better man to love you, protect you, and cherish you. But my legs..." Marcel said, hugging Ruby sadly, his eyes turning red. The slightest movement of his legs brought excruciating pain. Could he really stand up again?
"Marcel, as long as you're willing to cooperate, you'll definitely be able to stand again. Marcel, let me stay with you and face life's trials and tribulations together, okay? No matter how great the difficulties, no matter how much pain awaits us, let's bear it together, alright?
"You said you wouldn't push me away from your side ever again. You always keep your word. How can you push me away again at a time like this? You'd be betraying your own vow and also casting me as a heartless woman for the world to scorn. Everyone will say I was willing to call off my wedding and offend Glades for your sake, but then I abandoned you as soon as you got injured. They'll all accuse me of being heartless and disloyal. Do you really want to see me condemned like that? Marcel, let's get married."
