Chapter 133: Who’s Setting This Year’s Exam!?
Chapter 133: Who’s Setting This Year’s Exam!?
Chapter 133: Who's Setting This Year's Exam!?
Each Pokémon on the battle team may only use the four moves it has registered.
This includes, but is not limited to, Chansey, Skarmory, and Venusaur.
The walls were completely covered with Pokémon names, and the rule about move registration was repeated several times.
Someone unaware might think it was discriminatory.
"This rule is ridiculous," Misty said, clearly frustrated.
"I know this one," Ash raised his hand.
Natsume's highlighted booklet happened to cover this point.
"Uh, according to Natsume's booklet," Ash cleared his throat, "a battle team is built around Pokémon with strong defenses, using status moves to wear down opponents and recover their own HP."
Ash rattled off a long explanation but missed the main point.
"So… isn't that just a strategy?"
"Why does the League require these trainers to only use four registered moves?" Misty still didn't understand.
Natsume swallowed his sandwich and spoke.
"About ten years ago, two battle team trainers faced each other in the finals. It was a 6-on-6 Pokémon battle at the time."
He paused, expression strange.
"They battled for two full days and nights without a winner. Eventually, the Pokémon couldn't take it anymore, teamed up, and beat their trainers. The match ended unresolved."
"The trainers were dissatisfied and complained to the League, so they rematched—again for two days and nights."
"After that match, the League introduced the rule limiting the number of moves each Pokémon could use."
"But don't worry. This rule only applies to this particular strategy. Other Pokémon aren't restricted and don't need to register moves."
Natsume stuffed the remaining sandwich into his mouth.
Hearing this, everyone's expression twitched.
As expected, every rule has its reason.
"Candidates, please enter!"
An electronic female voice sounded. A League official in uniform also approached.
"Quickly, quickly, it's starting!"
Like herding ducks, the trainers filed into a computer lab.
Once seated, the monitors powered on automatically.
"Candidate Instructions: This exam is organized by the League and drafted by the Kanto Scientific Research Institute. During the exam—"
Skipping the three-minute instructions, the first questions finally appeared.
Ash's heart pounded as he stared at the screen.
The first section was theory.
The theory test, Part One: Regional Culture.
"Why is it recommended to exhale (blow air) when facing Dragon-type Pokémon?"
"Because of Dragonair."
"From which region's researcher was the League reporter conducting this interview?"
Ash hesitated for half a second, then immediately selected Kanto.
Yes, that's exactly how Kanto researchers behave.
Seeing the first question, some people were already scratching their heads.
This didn't feel right.
Wasn't the regional culture section supposed to be easy, asking about local Pokémon customs?
What kind of regional culture section is this?
The further they went, the more overwhelmed everyone became. By the end, all the candidates were sweating, staring blankly at the screen.
More and more people stalled here. The computer displays began to synchronize:
Comprehensive Pokémon Theory and Knowledge Application Questions (40 points)
Trainer Ash plans to hatch a 6V Pokémon (6V defined in the field as having maximum individual values of 31 in HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed).
Given the following conditions:
Father: Wurmple, all IVs maximum except Speed, Ability Flame Body.
Mother: Wurmple, all IVs maximum except Defense, Ability Shield Dust.
Question 1: Ash notices that all offspring have Flame Body. Which Ability is dominant and which is hidden? (1 point)
Question 2: What is the inheritance rule for IVs in the offspring? Describe the exact transmission method. (2 points)
Question 3: If Ash wants the offspring to inherit 100% of the mother's nature and Ability, how should he proceed? (2 points)
Question 4:
In the exam hall, Misty glanced up and exchanged a look with Brock.
What is this?
More and more candidates were confused.
There were eight more questions like this!
Scanning around, Natsume was idle while Giselle scribbled furiously.
Seeing Ash, Misty and Brock were stunned.
Ash was also hunched over, diligently writing!
"Huh?" Misty and Brock exchanged a look, hardly believing their eyes.
Time ticked by.
Soon, the time was up, and everyone was forced to submit.
"Damn it! Who's setting the League exam this year? This isn't Professor Oak's style!" one trainer complained.
"What does this have to do with common knowledge? Previous exams weren't like this!" another grumbled.
"Bastard! Don't let me meet him!" a trainer cursed loudly.
Amid the chaos, Natsume touched his nose.
"Quiet!" A commanding voice rang out.
Everyone looked up to see the examiner at the door.
"Alright, the results will be out soon."
The examiner walked in.
Behind him, a massive screen slowly descended.
Countless trainers stared blankly.
Feeling watched, the examiner cleared his throat:
"Uh, Professor Oak is unavailable. This year's new examiner seems to be setting questions for the first time, so the difficulty is higher than usual."
He paused, and in the tense silence, continued:
"The League has therefore lowered the passing score for this year." The examiner held up three fingers.
"Thirty points. Anyone scoring over thirty passes the exam!"
Hearing this, many trainers breathed a sigh of relief, though tension remained.
On the giant screen, names and scores began to flash.
"Ding—"
The first name to appear was Natsume. After that, countless names followed like mushrooms after rain.
[Natsume, 100]
[Giselle, 90]
[Ash, 66]
[Shinichi Kudō, 45]
Scores dropped sharply after Giselle, and again after Ash in third place.
The vast majority scored between 30–40 points.
Scores above 40 were extremely rare.
By the end, most trainers exceeded 30 points, achieving a passing grade.
"Yay! I got 66!"
As soon as Ash left the exam room, he jumped up excitedly.
Before he could shout more, Misty and Brock each grabbed one of his arms, dragging him aside.
Cornered, Ash faced them.
"Speak! Who are you?" Brock demanded sternly.
"No matter who you are, get out of Ash's body!"
Misty aimed Psyduck at Ash, whose eyes flickered with a blue light.
"Hey, hey, hey! I am Ash—who else could I be?" Ash protested.
Pika-pi! Pikachu jumped onto Ash's shoulder, proving he really was Ash.
"Then how did you do it?" Misty asked in surprise.
"Do what?" Ash looked puzzled.
"Your 66 points," Brock pointed out.
"Oh, that? I stayed up all night memorizing the key points Natsume highlighted!"
Ash excitedly pulled out the ultra-thin booklet.
"Huh? Just these few pages? How did you manage that?"
Misty and Brock fell into thought; both of them had barely managed just over forty points.
