Chapter 489 - 450: Awesome Once Again
Before the assistant could finish his sentence, Zhao Rong immediately retrieved the Bodhidharma Sword from his Magic Ring, tossed it next to the man, and said, "Assistant, I’ve thrown the Bodhidharma Sword over to you. You know what to do."
When the assistant saw that Zhao Rong had actually given him the sword, seemingly for him to commit seppuku, he burst into tears. Feeling utterly wronged, he cried, "Big Brother Zhao Rong, I was just joking! Are you really telling me to kill myself with this sword right in front of you, Miss Lili, Yu Lan, and Xuelian?"
Realizing his assistant had misunderstood, Zhao Rong quickly took a step back, gesturing for the three women beside him to do the same. He then pointed to a giant python behind the man. "Assistant, I gave you the Bodhidharma Sword to cut yourself free from that python! What did you think I wanted you to do?"
Hearing this, the assistant turned his head. A white snake, more than ten meters long and as thick as a bowl, was coiled tightly around his waist. He took one look and nearly fainted from fright. The assistant was an incredibly timid man. As he struggled in a panic, he pleaded with Zhao Rong, "Big Brother Zhao Rong, you know I’ve been terrified of snakes since I was a child! Please, hurry and save me! If this thing bites me, I’m a dead man!"
Before Zhao Rong could reply, the python constricted, tightening its grip. At that moment, Zhao Rong wanted to help, but there was nothing he could do directly. Helpless, he tried to think of a solution. "Assistant, stop struggling for now! Wait, I’ll buy a snake’s nemesis online to come save you."
Miss Lili also chimed in with a reminder, "Assistant, you must not move! When a snake has someone wrapped up, the more they struggle, the tighter it will squeeze. The situation will only get more dangerous until it constricts them to death."
Hearing Miss Lili’s words, the assistant was a mess of tears and snot. "Miss Lili, if I don’t move, am I supposed to just stay here and let this white python squeeze me until I die?"
He had barely finished speaking when the white python squeezed even harder.
Xuelian tried to comfort him, "Assistant, don’t be scared. Generally, large pythons like this aren’t venomous. Rest assured, even if it bites you, you won’t be poisoned."
Yu Lan, however, looked on worriedly. "Even if the python isn’t venomous," she said, "it kills its prey by crushing it with its muscles before swallowing it whole. If we don’t save the assistant soon, he’ll definitely be crushed to death and then eaten."
Just at this critical moment, a large package suddenly materialized and dropped from the sky, landing near Zhao Rong. When he opened it, everyone stared in stunned silence. From inside the package leaped a mongoose no bigger than a kitten.
When the assistant saw the package appear out of thin air, his hope for survival had flared. But when he saw that Zhao Rong’s purchase was just a tiny cat, his hope vanished. He began to cry even more wretchedly. His face was red and the veins on his neck bulged from the constriction as he said in agony, "Big Brother Zhao Rong, didn’t you say you were going to buy a python’s nemesis? Why did you buy a kitten? Are you messing with me?"
The three women standing beside Zhao Rong also thought he was treating his assistant’s life like a game. They accused him in unison, "Zhao Rong, we know cats eat fish and mice, but we’ve never heard of one eating a snake—let alone a gigantic python!"
Just as everyone was doubting him, the mongoose launched itself at the python. Though the mongoose was small, it was indeed the nemesis of snakes. In a flash, it pounced on the python, bit deep into its neck, and with a few swift movements, tore open its throat and severed the windpipe. Instantly, the python, which had been so powerful just moments before, collapsed to the ground, dead.
Once the python was dead, the assistant scrambled to his feet. Rubbing his neck, he said in lingering fear, "Big Brother Zhao Rong, I can’t believe that little cat could kill a giant python. That’s incredible!"
Zhao Rong looked fondly at the mongoose and said to his assistant, "It’s scary how little you know. That’s no kitten. It’s a mongoose, the natural enemy of snakes. Take a closer look."
When the assistant heard that the creature Zhao Rong had bought from the Paradise Shopping Cart was not a common cat but a mongoose, he finally understood.
Seeing that Zhao Rong had once again miraculously saved the assistant’s life and resolved the crisis so effortlessly, the three women gave him a thumbs-up. "Big Brother Zhao Rong, you’re practically a god! To us, it seemed like there was no way to save the assistant once that python had him. But you came up with the brilliant idea to buy a mongoose—a snake’s nemesis—from the internet and saved his life!"
Just then, the chief of the cannibal tribe walked over to their group. "People from the future, didn’t you want to see our homes and our food? Come, I will show you now."
Zhao Rong and his companions were extremely curious about their ancestors’ homes and diet, so they followed the tribespeople back to their settlement. They found that the people of the tribe all lived in simple huts made of thatch. Their diet consisted of wild fruits from the forest and various animals they caught. To Zhao Rong’s relief, he saw that his ancestors at this stage of evolution had already started cooking their meat instead of eating it raw.
By the time they finished touring the living quarters, night had fallen. The tribespeople arranged for Zhao Rong’s group to stay in a thatched hut near the chief’s own, as it was the best one in the entire tribe.
When they walked into the hut, they stared at the bare earth floor, their eyes wide. "Where are we supposed to sleep?" one of them asked.
A tribesman pointed to the ground, surprised. "On the floor, of course. Were you planning to sleep on the roof?"
"On the floor? How?" the three women asked, baffled. "Don’t you sleep on beds?"
The tribesman stared blankly for a long moment. "What’s a ’bed’?"
Standing to the side, Zhao Rong couldn’t hold back any longer. He turned to the three women and his assistant. "Are you kidding me? Our ancestors were lucky to be building thatched huts at this point in history. As for beds, people didn’t start using them until the Song Dynasty, when wooden beds were imported from the Western Regions. Before that, everyone slept on mats on the floor."
