Vol. 2 Chapter 89: Marina
Vol. 2 Chapter 89: Marina
“All right girls, I need to go see Finny and Feebas, but I promise that we will have lunch and supper together. Tomorrow we will all go do something fun as a group.”
The girls hugged me and I got up, heading over to Leilani, who had walked over to stand with Haiti while I was getting shocked. I patted both girls on the head and they smiled up at me.
“I hope everything is going good with you two, and Popsicle isn’t bothering either of you?” I asked, but both of them shook their heads ‘no’.
“She mostly bothers Knighty until she battles her,” my Ralts said. I smiled at that, then looked at my Hatenna.
“This place is really nice. I have had a lot of good sleeps, so I am happy,” Haiti said with a sleepy smile that I returned.
With that done, I closed my eyes, opening them again at the edge of the large clearing that surrounded Feebas’s habitat. My gaze drifted toward the edge of the large, crystal-clear pond that bordered the garden. There, half-hidden behind the swaying stalks of the reeds, was the girl I had been thinking about most during my time away.
She had long, silken hair the color of weathered scales, and eyes that always seemed to be searching for a place to hide. My Feebas girl. She was beautiful in a delicate, fragile way that she couldn't see herself, her skin marked by the rough, dull patches of her current form. She wore a white shawl that she pulled tighter, her shoulders hunching as she watched Finny race around the pool.
"Hey," I said softly, stepping toward the water.
I walked toward the water’s edge, my feet splashing softly in the shallows. She flinched as I approached, her gaze dropping to the water.
"I... I thought you might stay away longer this time," she whispered, her voice like the rustle of wind through dry grass. "With all the important things happening out there."
I felt bad about this. Feebas was my second Pokémon, and I had barely given her any of my time. I could say I was busy, but I could use that excuse for everything. It was best just to move forward and try to do my best.
"There is nothing more important than what’s happening in here," I told her, sitting down on a mossy rock just a few feet away so I wouldn't crowd her. "I spent the last few days surrounded by people who see me as a tool, or a problem to be solved. Coming back here, seeing you... it reminds me why I’m fighting so hard."
She looked up, a lock of her dull hair falling over her face. "But I’m not... I’m not like Lumi or Nemona. I’m just a Feebas. I’m rough and plain. I don't know why you even look at me when you have them."
My heart ached at the genuine sadness in her voice. I reached out, dipping my hand into the water and letting the power of my Hydro Shock skin—activated only on my one arm and hand—thrum through my fingers. The water began to glow with a faint, bioluminescent blue, swirling around my hand in a gentle vortex.
"Come here," I said, holding out my other hand.
She hesitated, then slowly glided through the water until she was floating in front of me. I took her hand, her skin feeling cool and slightly textured from the scales she hated so much.
"Look at the water," I whispered. As she looked down, I channeled a bit of the system's energy—not as a command, but as a gift. The rough patches of her skin didn't disappear, but they began to catch the light, turning from a dull brown to a shimmering, pearlescent gold beneath the surface. "These aren't flaws, and they aren't 'mud.' They’re concentrated beauty. You’re holding so much potential inside that it’s literally pressing through your skin, waiting for the right moment to evolve. You aren't plain. You’re a masterpiece in progress."
She gasped softly, her fingers tightening around mine. For the first time, she didn't try to hide.
"I want to give you a name," I said, leaning in so our foreheads touched. "Something that reflects the strength of the tides and the beauty of the deep. I want to call you Marina."
The moment the name left my lips, the air around us seemed to hum. A wave of warmth radiated from the point where our hands met, and I felt a deep, resonant connection click into place within the system.

[System Unlock: Milotic Evolution Path for Marina]
[Habitat Bonus: 1000 HP for Feebas Habitat, 500 HP for the Central Habitat]
Marina let out a shaky breath, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at her reflection. She wasn't a Milotic yet, but the way she carried herself changed in an instant. She floated taller, her shawl slipping from her shoulders to reveal the shimmering light now dancing across her skin.
"Marina," she tasted the name, a small, radiant smile breaking across her face. "I... I like it, Landon. Thank you."
I pulled her into a hug, feeling her heart beating rapidly against mine. This was why I did it. The points were just numbers on a screen, but the look in her eyes—the realization that she was loved and valued—that was the real power.
The quiet moment was broken by a sudden, exuberant splash. Finny, who had been racing laps around the perimeter of the pond, breached the surface like a silver-blue streak. She did a tight, celebratory flip in the air, landing close enough to send a gentle, cooling mist over us.
"Marina! Marina! Marina!" Finny cheered, her voice ringing out across the clearing as she glided over, her iridescent dress trailing in the wake. She didn't hesitate to wedge herself into the hug, her wet, cool skin pressing against my side as she beamed at the Feebas girl. "It fits you perfectly! See? I told you Landon would pick the best name!"
Marina giggled—a soft, musical sound I hadn't heard before—and reached out to squeeze Finny’s hand. The contrast between Finny’s high-energy spark and Marina’s newfound quiet confidence was exactly what this place was about. Seeing my first two girls bonded like sisters, safe in the sanctuary I’d built for them, made the weight of the "Primordial" itch feel lighter than ever.
