Chapter 496 - 488: Fenfen, My Daughter (11)

"Uncle gave it." The little girl showed off, spreading her palm open to display the candy to Ji Anning, "Fenfen behaved and got it."

Her speech wasn’t clear, but only Ji Anning could understand her every time in a split second.

Upon hearing this, she rewarded the girl with a kiss on the forehead, "Well done."

"Daddy."

Suddenly, Fenfen stretched out a hand and picked up the phone Ji Anning had hung around her neck in her rush, lighting up the screen, but she couldn’t unlock it.

She became a bit anxious, pointing at the screen and lifting her head to say to Ji Anning, "Daddy, Daddy."

Ji Anning knew what she meant, felt a warmth around her eyes, and, with a heart full of pity, reached out to touch the girl’s small head, "Daddy put it away so others can’t see."

Fenfen pouted, "Daddy won’t hold."

The sight of her disappointment made Ji Anning’s heart squeeze tight; she hugged the girl’s soft little body close and gently rested her chin on her head, sniffing slightly, "Daddy has to hide it, not let anyone see, Mommy will hold you."

’I’m not interested in your child...’

While comforting the disappointed Fenfen, Ji Anning recalled Ji Chicheng’s sarcastic words.

She felt sorry for Fenfen and even sorrier for him.

Suddenly, the car door was opened from the outside, interrupting Ji Anning’s train of thought. She quickly rubbed her eyes and turned to look out the other window.

"Is Fenfen asleep?"

Charles leaned in behind Ji Anning, stretching his neck to take a look at Fenfen and seeing that the girl hadn’t fallen asleep, he reached out and gently touched her face, his expression full of affection, "Our Fenfen is truly beautiful."

The little girl gave him a sweet smile; tired, she snuggled into Ji Anning’s arms and stayed still.

Charles stroked her head and then turned his gaze to Ji Anning’s face, looked at her for a couple of seconds, then turned back and instructed the driver to start the car.

After the car started, the little one in Ji Anning’s arms soon fell asleep.

"Cover her up." Charles brought over a blanket and laid it over Fenfen.

Ji Anning looked down, adjusted the blanket, and then kept her eyes fixed on Fenfen’s right eye, her gaze melancholic.

"Niannian, why did you and Fenfen’s dad split up?"

Charles suddenly asked Ji Anning.

This was the first time she’d been asked that question because everyone assumed Fenfen was her child with Charles, the wealthy old merchant, so no one had asked.

Startled for a moment, she responded lightly with a chuckle, "We just split up."

Charles asked again, "Then why don’t you let Fenfen recognize her dad?"

"Because I can’t," Ji Anning lowered her eyelids, her eyes moistened for a moment, then she turned back and smiled, raising her eyebrows at Charles, "What about you?"

Charles also raised his eyebrows, a puzzled expression on his face.

Ji Anning asked, "What’s the grudge between you and my grandfather? Why do you want my child to have the surname Charles?"

Charles’s warm expression suddenly changed, a flash of hatred in his eyes, he said bitterly, "Because he owes me."

Ji Anning wasn’t surprised; she had suspected that there must be some grudge between Charles and Ji Zhengdao.

And a significant one at that, though she didn’t know the specifics. However, no matter the grievance, she knew she couldn’t stay with the Charles family much longer because she didn’t want to be used by Charles as a tool to take revenge on her grandfather.

Even though she resented the old man, setting aside whether she was his biological granddaughter or not, she still had to consider her beloved uncle, as that old man was still the uncle’s biological father.
