"Sure."
Ji Anning nodded, her attention drawn to the violin music nearby.
The violinist’s movements were as graceful as the music he played, and Ji Anning watched in rapt attention.
With her hands supporting her cheeks, a casual smile played at the corners of her eyes and lips, surpassing a ten-mile spring breeze, like a bud ready to bloom.
Qi Helian quietly put down his mobile phone and mimicked Ji Anning’s pose, with hands supporting his cheeks, gazing at her tenderly.
He couldn’t quite pinpoint what was so good about her, but watching her was comforting.
If he really had to describe the feeling, he would say it was purer than a spring, more elfin than an elf, brighter than the sunlight.
Perhaps it was because of the sinister nature of his circle. Those people, even just sitting with him for a meal, might harbor ulterior motives; every approach had an agenda.
But such cliched melodramatic scenarios, he had personally acted out when he had just started his career and never enjoyed them in the dramas.
In reality, however, he always found himself absorbed, like now.
Yet, no matter how wonderful, it didn’t belong to him, so his gaze really shouldn’t linger on her, he couldn’t allow himself to fall too deeply.
Qi Helian reined in all his thoughts, withdrew his gaze, and shook open a napkin across his lap.
Looking back at Ji Anning, she was still focused on that corner, her beautiful face radiant with a smile.
Qi Helian raised an eyebrow. "Do you really like the violin?"
"Not really," Ji Anning’s train of thought was interrupted, and she shook her head: "It just brought up a particularly meaningful memory."
She responded briefly and laid out her napkin as well.
The steaks they had ordered arrived, both servings identical.
Qi Helian’s interest was piqued by Ji Anning’s mention of ’a particularly meaningful memory,’ so as he picked up his knife and fork to start eating, he looked at Ji Anning with interest and asked, "Oh? What kind of meaningful memory is it, can you share it?"
Ji Anning generously smiled, "When I first came to Hai City as a child, I went to the train station alone once. It was crowded, and I was scared. Then I saw a very beautiful girl playing the violin at the square of the station. She was playing Lucia Flowers, many people were watching, and children were singing along. I was drawn in."
She spoke while cutting her steak, and after finishing, she forked a piece of beef into her mouth and chewed thoughtfully.
Qi Helian’s hands paused in cutting his steak, and he lifted his head, his eyes narrowing slightly in contemplation as he watched Ji Anning.
Ji Anning frowned and also stopped chewing, asking puzzledly, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing," Qi Helian’s face broke into an interested smile again and he continued to probe, "And then what happened?"
Ji Anning said, "She kept playing over and over, with tears in her eyes. Eventually, everyone had gone, and only she and I were left."
"And then?" Qi Helian clutched the knife and fork tightly, watching Ji Anning with unblinking eyes.
His eyes flickered slightly.
"In the end, she walked away sullenly, and when she was leaving, she said angrily to me ’women are liars’ and told me not to trust women."
As she spoke, Ji Anning started laughing, "It seemed like she didn’t realize that one day she would become one of the ’women’ she mentioned."
