Chapter 600
Chapter 600
We, along with Gyobu, Luva, and Sekmetos, moved to the mansion's guest room and began the meeting.
Originally, the agenda was focused on strengthening logistics with the neighboring Tanuki clan territory.
Even if Baldia and the Fox clan territory formed a technical alliance, without buyers, there would eventually be an oversupply.
To expand the sales network across the entire continent, not just the Empire and Renarute, we needed to steadily broaden our distribution channels.
This meeting was supposed to be the first step in expanding our sales network within Zveera, but having everyone here except Gyobu was completely unexpected.
During the meeting, surprisingly, Sekmetos and Luva said nothing, merely listening with interest as Gyobu and we conversed.
It was also somewhat eerie.
In the course of our discussion with Gyobu, one of his remarks stood out: "We would very much like the Christie Trading Company to expand into the Tanuki tribe territory."
It seems the Tanuki tribe has the best grasp of both domestic and international trade flows in Zveera and is interested in reselling some products purchased from the Christie Trading Company.
"If you combine the territories of all the best tribes , Zveera's land area rivals that of the Empire. It would be impossible for the Christie Trading Company to cover such a vast area all at once. Even if you could supply us with just a few products at special prices, that would be sufficient. After all, Zveera is suffering from various shortages."
Gyobu shrugged as if resigned.
There is some truth to his words, but his true intentions are hard to gauge.
It would be best to put this on hold for now and take it back for further consideration.
I narrowed my eyes and nodded.
"I see, understood. I will discuss this with Chris."
"Oh, can't we get a decision here and now?"
Gyobu looked at me with a meaningful tone.
However, I maintained my smile.
"I am here as a representative of my father, Riner Baldia, not as a representative of the Christie Trading Company. Moreover..."
After a brief pause, I turned serious.
"Our family was betrayed by the former Grand Duke's family. Of course, I believe that the tribe leaders of Zveera would not trample on sincerity as those individuals did. However, given recent events, I hope you understand that making immediate decisions is somewhat difficult under the current circumstances."
Gyobu twitched his eyebrows, leaned back in his chair, and shook his head.
"Well, well. That's a sore point. Sekmetos, don't you have some responsibility in this matter as well?"
"Indeed. The incident with Gales and Elba, failing to stop their reckless actions driven by their own decisions. Personally, I would like to apologize to Lord Lidd for that."
Sekmetos bowed slightly while seated and continued, "However..."
"From a national perspective, the remarkable development of Baldia, a neighboring country at the border, is truly terrifying and ominous. While it was undoubtedly a mistake for Gales and Elba to act rashly, as a ruler, I can somewhat understand their feelings."
Her words instantly tensed the atmosphere in the room.
"...The battle at the Narrow Fortress caused significant casualties to the Baldia family's knights, and of course, to the Fox clan as well. Even as the Beast King, or perhaps because of that position, shouldn't you be careful with your words?"
I sharpened my gaze and spoke with a quiet anger, my tone intensifying.
"Oops, my apologies. If I offended you, I apologize. But consider this: a neighbor developing so rapidly that it becomes a formidable threat in the near future. And the constant fear of when they might attack. Isn't that a situation that would naturally induce fear? Submission, subservience, or an alliance under the guise of a 'vassal state'?"
Sekmetos glanced sideways at Amon and Tis, smirking defiantly.
"As long as there is a power imbalance, an equal alliance is impossible."
"I understand what you're saying, but nations and people are not solely driven by interests."
I immediately countered.
"The actions of Gales and Elba are unforgivable, and I have no intention of forgiving them. However, had they used their abilities for harmony and cooperation, we might have been able to build a good, equal relationship. The core issue is their ideology of 'survival of the fittest,' which posits us as a hypothetical enemy."
"Oh? So, Lord Ridd, are you outright rejecting the Beastmen's ideology?"
Sekmetos responded with a probing look and tone.
"Not outright. It's the twisted version of 'survival of the fittest' that I observed in the Fox territory and in my encounters with Gales and Elba."
Upon hearing this, Sekmetos adopted a more solemn expression.
Then, Luva, seated next to her, leaned forward.
"That's very interesting. Could you share more about this 'twisted survival of the fittest' you perceived, for our further understanding?"
"Of course."
I nodded and began explaining my observations from before the battle at the Narrow Fortress up to the present.
The idea that the strong survive and the weak perish is not inherently wrong.
No matter what world you live in, there are harsh realities.
However, this ideology does not justify the strong disregarding the weak.
Moreover, great power naturally comes with great responsibility, regardless of one's will.
If one continues to use such power selfishly, they will eventually be overwhelmed by an even greater force.
Most importantly, Elba and Gales, who claimed to be strong, would not have been able to sustain their daily lives without the people they derided as weak.
To forget that and insist on being strong is not just arrogance but sheer folly.
"...That's all. Like Elba and Gales, some of the powerful families in the Fox clan territory were extremely self-serving. I personally believe this is a result of the twisted ideology that the weak exist solely for the benefit of the strong."
"A twisted survival of the fittest where the weak exist for the strong, huh? That's a hard pill to swallow."
After I finished, Luva sighed and shrugged.
Gyobu remained leaning back in his chair, arms crossed, his expression unchanged.
"...Interesting."
Sekmetos murmured and then burst into laughter.
Everyone in the room turned their gaze towards her.
"Well, well. Lord ridd, you are around the same age as my son Johan, yet you possess remarkable insight and perspective. If you were a woman, I would have wanted you to be Johan's wife."
"Wow! Amazing, mother has acknowledged Lidd!"
Johan, seated next to Sekmetos, beamed with excitement, though I wasn't particularly thrilled.
"Thank you. But as I've said many times, I am a man and already married. So, that can't be taken as a compliment."
I deliberately narrowed my eyes, and she bowed slightly, saying, "My apologies," then continued, "However..."
"Lord Ridd's words. I agree with them."
"Eh...?"
I was taken aback by the Beast King's unexpected response.
