Chapter 221: Do You Have to Have Such Double Standards?
Chapter 221: Do You Have to Have Such Double Standards?
Chloe Sterling studied the two of them and asked leisurely, "So, is there something or not?"
"No!"
"No!"
This time, they were finally on the same page. Chloe Sterling’s gaze landed on the man who had just said there was something. "You. Tell me what’s going on. Why do you keep trying to make me leave?"
The man immediately replied, "Miss Chester, you’ve misunderstood. We’re not trying to make you leave, we just want you to go home and rest early. Look, it’s already past nine. If you don’t go back soon... President Lockwood will start to worry, won’t he?"
Jasper Lockwood had a social engagement tonight and would be home late. Chloe Sterling had nothing to do if she went back, so she decided to stay at the lab and speed up the project’s progress.
"Don’t the Nocturne Group and the Lockwood Group have a history? Since when do you care about the other side?"
"No, no, we’re mainly worried about you, Miss Chester. If you and your husband fight, you’ll be in a bad mood, and that will affect your train of thought."
After staring at the two for a moment, Chloe Sterling said, "How about I just ask Silas Coldwell?"
Hearing this, their faces instantly changed.
"No, no, no!"
"Don’t! Don’t ask him!"
Chloe Sterling: "Then tell me the truth."
The two men glanced at each other. One of them said, "Miss Chester, to be honest with you... this project might be shut down."
"Why?" Chloe Sterling asked, surprised.
"Things are complicated within the Group. You probably know a little about it. A few of the elders don’t believe this project can be finished before the end of the year. They don’t even believe it can succeed. They’re saying... saying President Coldwell is just using this project as an excuse to come to Crestfall and chase after a woman. They’re collectively demanding he stop."
Chloe Sterling frowned. "Chase after a woman?"
The man nodded. "Yeah, to pick up a girl. And that girl is you."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
The other Pharmacist added, "It’s mainly because President Coldwell has been here for several months without any progress. Of course, you can’t blame him for that, since you only agreed to help a month ago. But someone at headquarters is stirring up trouble behind the scenes, which has made the elders suspicious of President Coldwell."
Chloe Sterling said, "But we’re making progress now."
"But they don’t believe it."
Chloe Sterling: "So Silas Coldwell is going to stop?"
"President Coldwell doesn’t want to stop, of course, but the current situation is hard to say. We haven’t been able to contact him for the past two days. He’s not even answering his phone. So you should probably just take a break for now."
Chloe Sterling frowned. "He’s not answering his phone?"
The two men nodded in unison.
After a moment’s thought, Chloe Sterling took her phone from her pocket and dialed Silas Coldwell’s number. It rang for less than three seconds before the call connected. A man’s lazy, deep voice came through. "Hello? What’s up?"
The two Pharmacists: "..."!!
Chloe Sterling glanced at the two of them before asking, "How are things on your end? What’s the situation?"
Silas Coldwell chuckled lightly. "What’s wrong? Worried about me?"
The two Pharmacists were speechless once again!
’Does he have to be such a hypocrite?!’
’We called him so many times and he didn’t pick up, but when Lynn Chester calls, he answers in less than three seconds!’
Chloe Sterling said, "I wouldn’t say worried. I’m just asking. If you can’t handle it, then I don’t have to work on this project anymore."
Silas Coldwell snorted. "What kind of storm haven’t I weathered? You think I can’t handle a few petty tricks? Don’t even dream about it. Just focus on your project. I’ll be back to check on it in a few days."
"Are you sure you can be back in a few days?" Chloe Sterling asked.
"Of course. Why? Did you hear some rumors? Or has Jasper Lockwood been spouting nonsense to you?"
"You’re overthinking it. He doesn’t mention you in front of me. I’m just asking for my own sake."
Over the phone, Silas Coldwell was silent for a moment before his voice grew heavy. "The situation is a bit complicated, but I’ve never been afraid of this stuff. If they want to play dirty with me, then let’s see who dies first."
"Is there anything I can do?" Chloe Sterling asked. "Consider it repaying a favor."
"Actually, there is something you can help me with. When you get to the office tomorrow, go to my office, take a picture of a document for me, and send it over."
Chloe Sterling was a little speechless. "Taking pictures of documents sounds like a job for your assistant."
Silas Coldwell: "It’s a confidential document. I don’t trust anyone else."
Hearing this, Chloe Sterling couldn’t help but laugh. "I’m ’someone else’ too. And I’m in your rival’s camp. You trust me?"
"I do," Silas Coldwell chuckled. "Lynn Chester, I know exactly what kind of person you are."
Chloe Sterling’s smile vanished. Her fingers tightened slightly as she asked, "What document?"
"Hmm? ...You’re not still at the lab, are you?" Silas Coldwell asked.
"I was just about to leave. I’ll go take the picture for you now."
"Why so late?"
"I wasn’t paying attention to the time."
"You think I’ll believe that?"
"Believe it or not!"
After saying that, Chloe Sterling looked at the two Pharmacists and said, "Let’s go."
The two nodded awkwardly and followed her out of the lab.
Afterward, Chloe Sterling arrived in front of Silas Coldwell’s office. He gave her the passcode directly, and after she entered, he gave her the code for the safe as well.
Chloe Sterling suddenly said, "There’s nothing else in this safe, right? Don’t blame me if something valuable goes missing."
Silas Coldwell laughed. "I won’t blame you. Even if you carried the whole thing away, I wouldn’t blame you."
After entering the code, Chloe Sterling opened the safe and looked for the document he’d mentioned. While searching, she noticed a file folder that Silas Coldwell had shown her before. It had a special symbol on it, which was why she remembered it. It contained the evidence that Jasper Lockwood had investigated her before they even met. She hadn’t looked at it at the time.
"Find it?" Silas Coldwell asked.
Chloe Sterling pulled out a file folder from the very bottom. "Found it."
"Take a picture of the contents for me. Make sure it’s clear."
"Okay."
Chloe Sterling took the document out of the folder, took a picture with her phone, and sent it to Silas Coldwell. After it successfully sent, she deleted the photo from her phone.
Silas Coldwell: "Got it. Thanks. By the way, there’s another file in there you can look at anytime you want."
Chloe Sterling: "No need."
Silas Coldwell: "Babe, you can choose to cover your eyes, but facts are facts. Jasper Lockwood knew your identity from the start. He lied to you."
"Cut the crap!" Tossing him those three words, Chloe Sterling hung up the phone.
She didn’t touch the file. Even if Jasper Lockwood had hidden things from her, she believed his feelings for her were real.
She would wait for Jasper Lockwood to tell her himself. She believed he would give her an answer.
She put the documents back, locked the safe, and left the office.
「Meanwhile.」
Jasper Lockwood’s event had also wrapped up. As he was walking out, Stella Morgan hurried after him. "Jasper."
"What is it?"
"You guessed it. The pirates were just making a feint to test us."
Jasper Lockwood said calmly, "That’s to be expected. Play along with them a few more times."
Stella Morgan nodded. "I’ll have someone else contact them."
"Mm," Jasper Lockwood responded faintly, then turned and asked Henry Chamberlain, "Has my wife gone home?"
Henry Chamberlain: "..."
’How would I know!’ He quickly added, "I’ll call the housekeeper and ask."
"No need," Jasper Lockwood said. "I’ll call her myself." As he spoke, he took out his phone.
A shadow passed over Stella Morgan’s eyes, but she didn’t say anything more.
’We’re just business partners,’ she just kept telling herself. ’Only business partners.’
