Chapter 202: Slightly Exaggerated Acting
Chapter 202: Slightly Exaggerated Acting
Silas Coldwell smoothed his sleeves and said languidly, "But you have a point. I should make a trip back. Why don’t you come with me?"
Chloe Sterling gave him an ’in your dreams’ look.
"What’s with that look? I’m serious. You’re mine now, so what’s the big deal about coming back with me for a trip?"
Their relationship was just a single transaction. Chloe Sterling was tired of repeating herself. She knew that no matter how many times she stressed the point, Silas Coldwell wouldn’t change his mind, so she simply ignored him.
Silas Coldwell smirked. "If you don’t say anything, I’ll take it as a yes."
Chloe Sterling glanced at the time, then took off her gloves. "It’s noon. I have to step out for a bit."
Silas Coldwell’s expression soured instantly. He scoffed, "Is Jasper Lockwood here again?"
Chloe Sterling didn’t answer, simply turning and walking out of the laboratory.
Silas Coldwell narrowed his eyes and followed her.
After leaving the Nocturne Group branch office, Chloe Sterling went to a nearby restaurant where Jean Kensington was already waiting for her at a table. "Sweetie, over here!"
Chloe Sterling walked over to her. "When did you get here?"
"Just a few minutes ago." Jean Kensington handed her the menu. "See what you’d like to eat."
Chloe Sterling glanced at the menu. "Anything is fine. You can order."
"Alright, I’ll order then," Jean Kensington said as she flipped through the menu. "How’s the project at the Nocturne Group coming along? How much longer do you have to be here?"
"I’m not sure yet." Chloe Sterling poured herself a glass of lemonade. "It’s probably going to take a little longer than expected. The situation is a bit complicated."
"What? So, can you finish within two months?"
Chloe Sterling took a sip of water, her tone laced with resignation. "It’s hard to say."
Jean Kensington looked up at her for a moment. "Doesn’t that mean your President Lockwood will have to be patient for a while longer?"
This was another thing giving Chloe Sterling a headache. She had told Jasper Lockwood she would be finished within two months, but now it seemed it wouldn’t be so easy.
’Two months probably won’t be enough.’
"Have you told him?" Jean Kensington asked again.
Chloe Sterling shook her head slightly. "No. I’ll wait a bit and see. Maybe I’ll suddenly think of a solution."
Jean Kensington nodded. "Yeah, that’s true."
Just as they were talking, a tall, slender figure suddenly appeared beside them.
"So you weren’t meeting Jasper Lockwood, huh?" Silas Coldwell smiled, abruptly sitting down next to Chloe Sterling. He then turned to Jean Kensington and said, "Order whatever you like. Don’t be shy."
Jean Kensington was speechless.
Chloe Sterling furrowed her brow slightly. "What are you doing here?"
"I haven’t eaten either. Perfect timing." Silas Coldwell’s gaze shifted to Jean Kensington, a hint of a threat in his eyes. "Your friend shouldn’t mind, right?"
Jean Kensington looked at Chloe, then at him, and said, "If Chloe doesn’t mind, then I don’t mind."
"See?" Silas Coldwell said to Chloe. "She says she doesn’t mind."
Since he had already sat down, Silas Coldwell obviously wasn’t going to leave. Chloe Sterling knew this full well and didn’t say another word, but it meant she could no longer speak freely with Jean Kensington.
"By the way, we haven’t been introduced. What’s your friend’s name?" Silas Coldwell suddenly asked.
At his words, a peculiar look flashed in both Chloe Sterling’s and Jean Kensington’s eyes. Before either of them could answer, Silas Coldwell added, "Her name wouldn’t be Whisper, would it?"
Chloe Sterling didn’t have many friends, and even fewer she was particularly close to. The hacker Whisper was one of those few, and for the past two years, Whisper had been the one helping her cover her tracks.
Since returning to Crestfall, the person Chloe Sterling had been in contact with most was Jean Kensington. That’s why Silas Coldwell had made the guess, though he wasn’t entirely certain.
Chloe Sterling said calmly, "You’re overthinking things."
Jean Kensington blinked, feigning a bewildered expression. "Whisper? My name isn’t Whisper. Is that even a real name? I’ve never heard of a last name like ’Whisper’."
A smirk played on Silas Coldwell’s lips as his deep eyes studied the two of them. He added, "Whisper is a hacker. What? Hasn’t Chloe ever told you about her good friend, the hacker Whisper?"
"Wow!" Jean Kensington put on a shocked expression. "Chloe, you actually know a hacker? That’s so amazing!"
Chloe was speechless.
’This acting is a little over the top.’
"Is this hacker, Whisper, very skilled?" Jean Kensington asked again.
Chloe Sterling nodded. "Yes, very skilled. Top ten on the international hacker rankings. I’ll introduce you two if I get the chance."
Jean Kensington looked thrilled. "Awesome! I admire experts like that the most."
Silas Coldwell toyed with the water glass in his hand and said nonchalantly, "You’d better tell her to hide well. If I ever find her, I’ll skin her alive."
In the past, Whisper had caused him no end of trouble, and he remembered every single incident.
Chloe Sterling shot him a sideways glance. "If you dare touch her, I’ll make you regret it."
Silas Coldwell replied, "If she’s willing to work for me, I might consider letting her off the hook."
Jean Kensington put on a puzzled look. "Did that Whisper person offend President Coldwell?"
Silas Coldwell’s sharp gaze fixed on her, as if trying to see right through her. After a moment’s pause, he spoke slowly, "Of course. I’ve had my people looking for her recently. It seems she’s in Crestfall, too. What a coincidence."
"Chloe, is your hacker friend really in Crestfall?" Jean Kensington deliberately asked.
Chloe Sterling replied, "No, don’t listen to his nonsense."
Watching their dubious back-and-forth, Silas Coldwell snorted. "Whether she’s here or not, we’ll find out soon enough."
Jean Kensington could barely swallow her food; it felt like there was a fishbone stuck in her throat. She secretly wondered if Silas Coldwell had really found her, or if he had already seen through her identity.
’This guy doesn’t actually want to kill me, does he? Back when I was young and reckless, I really did a lot to piss him off. Someone like Silas Coldwell, who holds a grudge, would definitely never let me off the hook if he found me!’
Silas Coldwell didn’t stay until the end. He took a phone call and left, paying the bill on his way out.
Only after he had walked out of the restaurant and was completely out of sight did Jean Kensington dare to speak. "What did he mean by all that? He hasn’t really figured out who I am, has he?"
Chloe Sterling replied, "I don’t think so. He’s just suspicious, trying to bait us."
Jean Kensington frowned. "That guy is way too sharp!"
"But... besides hiding my location for me, what exactly did you do to him in the past?"
Jean Kensington sighed. "Ah, back when I was young and reckless... I hacked a lot of his classified files and sold them. Plus, that hacker who works for him is my arch-nemesis; we’ve been fighting for years. I haven’t messed with them at all recently, but this guy still won’t let it go."
"It sounds like he wants to recruit you for the Nocturne Group."
"No way. If I really joined the Nocturne Group, I’d probably never be free again."
Chloe Sterling chuckled. "Then you’d better stay hidden."
Jean Kensington put down her chopsticks. "I’ve lost my appetite. I need to head home."
Chloe had already finished eating, so she called the waiter over for the bill. The waiter informed her that the gentleman from earlier had already taken care of it.
And so, the two of them left the restaurant.
Chloe Sterling returned to the Nocturne Group, while Jean Kensington drove herself home. Halfway there, she sensed she was being followed, so she quickly turned the wheel and drove into the underground parking garage of a nearby shopping mall.
