Vol. 6
Volume 6 starts with the very first scene from the prologue: Lil waking up from her coma.In the days that follow, Lil shifts between consciousness and unconsciousness. In the moments Lil is awake, she tries to get her bearings, but it’s difficult due to her weakened body. Her fights with Ed don’t help the matter. Lil herself feels betrayed by Ed for being the Admiral, while Ed still deals with the hurt of being abandoned in a life threatening situation by Lil. That’s the reason why most of the treatment of Lil’s injury will be done by a second doctor, Levi Grits.
After a second failed attempt to escape, Levi eventually takes the time to show Lil what Ed has done for her recovery and in what kind of state her body currently resides. It comes as a big shock to Lil to learn that, under normal circumstances, she should have died; it’s safe to say this was an eye-opening moment for her.
When Lil’s condition improves a bit, she has some more freedom to explore Ed’s mansion. Only one thing is on her mind: how can she save her crew from the prison of Gualthiero? She eventually plans to break them free, but needs blueprints of the prison to do so, so by going around the mansion, she hopes to get her hands on some. It was then that she found herself in another encounter with Ed. After the first tension leaves the room, Ed and Lil actually have a proper discussion. Lil starts to understand Ed’s hurt, that even though his injuries have healed, his mental scars are very much open. That same evening, Ed brings Lil a peace offering in the form of some meat. During this late snack, Lil lays down her plans to save her crew, and to her surprise, Ed immediately tells her he’s onboard with this plan. From that day on, they start to plan the prison break together.
A week passes, and Lil is finally fit enough to take a look downtown, trying to get a feel for the routes of the city. This enables an unexpected encounter with Cesar, whom Lil thought to be also imprisoned. Cesar has been hard at work to help the crew and got his hands on identification certificates from Viscount Noirmont himself; those certificates should be enough to free Lil’s original crew. Throughout the rest of their conversation, it becomes clear that Cesar isn’t ready to let Lil go, but sadly for Cesar, it isn’t the same for her. In Lil’s mind, their relationship came to an end for a very good reason. She doesn’t feel the need to open old wounds and fall back into old patterns that have proven to end in disaster. This leaves Cesar heartbroken.
Unbeknownst to everyone, Lil’s brother, Venua, has rented a villa in Roahn, secretly searching for Lil. As a witness, he brings in the dressmaker, who had been summoned by Ed a few weeks ago, to tell them about Ed’s ‘mistress’ and if this mistress could be Lil.
One morning, Lil finds herself in Ed’s bedroom. There, her eye falls on the small portrait that Ed has been given by the Duke of Mirielle. It’s a painting of Lil herself with some small writing on the back suggesting that Ed was hired by Mirielle to find Lil and to hand her over to him. When Ed finally walks in, a huge fight breaks out. Lil feels betrayed, again, by Ed. The shock of this betrayal leads to Lil’s health deteriorating, and she collapses. Ed is heartbroken; he even confessed his love for Lil, but it wasn’t enough for Lil to hear him out. His biggest fear comes through; Lil leaves the mansion and rents a room in a small inn.
Despite everything that has happened. Lil is still determined to break free her crew. The morning after the whole ordeal, Lil walks the streets of Roahn and finds herself in the presence of a very haggardly looking Commodore Sagastar. The guilt on Sagastar’s shoulders was too much to bear, and in the weeks after their landing, he started to drink his sorrows away. Lil and the Commodore met in a small bar where Lil asked him for a favour. She explains that she’s in possession of identification certificates and wants to use Sagastar’s influence and authority to help her free her crew. Ed eventually joins this conversation, and Sagastar accepts Lil’s request.
At the end of this volume, Lil recognises that she still needs Ed’s help and decides to temporarily bury the hatchet to make the jailbreak work.
Some quick and important trivia:
Lil had been in a coma for more than 1,5 months. This is a dangerously long time. Ed did everything he could to keep her body in the best condition, but the problem was her mind. If she stayed unconscious for much longer, the chances of brain damage would increase. As a doctor, Ed chose to use a drug called ‘Maltine’. From a case study, Ed had learned that it helped with waking up a patient before. It worked; Lil woke up. Side effects from the drug and her coma that Lil was struggling with in this volume were: body aches, dizzy spells, loss of muscle and hair loss. Fortunately, her mind shows, thus far, no signs of damage.Ed’s return to Roahn is being kept secret. He’s afraid that the Duke of Mireille will learn of his return and comes looking for Lil. Because of this, Commodore Sagastar is currently the highest in command, and Lindhardt Eichendorff is acting as proxy for state affairs.Levi and Lindhardt are in a relationship, but Levi has turned down Lindhardt’s marriage proposal. Both Levi and Linhardt are from the North. They have black hair, pale skin, monolid eyes and are tall.In a flashback, we learn a bit more about the situation after the battle. The captain’s office on the Bell Rock was made into a temporary operating room. After Cesar was dragged from the office, Ed and the doctor did their best to stop the bleeding; they eventually succeeded. But by the time Lil had already lost a significant amount of blood, too much. So, Ed decided to perform a blood transfusion by using his own blood. This was a practice long forbidden. When Lil was more stable, she was transferred to the Visha. Cesar was kept alive for the sole reason that Lil would be sad if she were to ever wake up, and he would be dead. After the Landing in Roahn, Cesar stayed in his family home, where he quickly returned to his day-to-day life from before his adventure with Lil. In the meantime, he negotiated with the Viscount of Noirmont to receive the identity certificates at a high price. The spirits in the navy aren’t good. Most officers are angry that the prisoners haven’t been put on trial or executed yet. Ed is trying together with Captain Long to keep the atmosphere good and knock down the sentiment that the navy should immediately go out to sea and annihilate the South.Due to Levi being the only noble woman living in the mansion and the fact that she’s much taller than Lil, Ed calls in a dressmaker in order to make some clothes for Lil. The dressmaker was asked to be discreet and keep Ed’s return a secret. Unfortunately, Venua’s threats were enough to make the dressmaker betray Ed.Gualthiero is a state prison, meaning that, even though it’s located in Roahn, Ed isn’t the governor. It belongs to the King. In the past, the prison did great business as it was full of Western pirates, and donations at that time were high. After almost all the pirates were annihilated, the prison fell on hard times. The pirates were exchanged with regular criminals and tax frauds, and donations stopped. To overcome this crisis, the governor of the prison offered high-class criminals with enough money a more luxurious stay in exchange for money. That made it possible for said high-class criminals to have fully furnished cells, servants, and even being able to host parties. The crew is currently imprisoned in Gualthiero. A prison with the nickname of the vineyard. The crew is split up. One day, Alain is summoned out of his cell and finds himself at a dinner party. There, he’s reunited with Jericho and Marenzio. While eating something, Alain is addressed by a man called Avar. Avar is interested in obtaining spices from the South, and because the crew is currently known as ‘southern merchants’, Alain is being questioned about some possibilities. With a bit of acting work from Alain, he managed to get his hands on a load of utensils. From that day forward, the crew kept busy using forks and knives to free themselves.Sagastar is currently on the wrong foot with Ed due to his involvement in Lil’s accident. After Lil finds out about Ed’s relationship with the Duke of Mireille, Ed sends Lil a letter where he explains everything. Lil, however, refuses to read it and is only keeping up with Ed for the sake of the prison break.Ed and Lil are planning to use the upcoming arrival of a western delegation in Roahn as a distraction to break the crew out of prison. They’ll use wagons to transport the men from Gualthiero to the harbour.New characters in this volume:
