Chapter 1555 833: New Job (Part 2)

Chapter 1555 833: New Job (Part 2)

The portal closed, and Jimmy let out a long breath. As long as Roland disappeared, others wouldn't be able to hold onto this issue anymore. Even if Roland reappeared after a while, it wouldn't matter.

When he returned to the living room, Nia looked up and asked, "He's gone?"

"Yes, he probably won't come back for at least two or three months. We can relax."

Jimmy had mentioned to Nia someone was keeping a close watch on Roland. After all, in case there was any surveillance or tracking, Nia needed a heads-up to avoid problems due to misinformation. Now that Roland was gone, she too breathed a sigh of relief.

Jimmy sat on the sofa, holding Nia, who turned to look at him, "What's really going on?"

Jimmy said, "Someone found out that when we left, the person watching the house was Roland and started investigating him. You know Roland comes from the Dark Tower World, there are no records here... And because of your and my identity... So they focused on him."

Nia nodded. She couldn't get involved in this kind of matter, so she had to trust that Jimmy would handle everything. As they got married and had children, many of Jimmy's previously hidden secrets started coming to light. At least she now knew the origin of Jimmy's three revolvers, which started when she noticed Roland carrying two revolvers just like Jimmy's.

The connection with the Church and the CIA was something she already knew about because people introduced at their engagement and wedding ceremonies, as disclosed by Jimmy, invariably included their identities. Now, they were both truly in the same boat.

Nia asked, "What about your work?"

Jimmy replied, "Not yet, probably need to wait another year or two. I'm still too young to climb up right now. Don't worry, life is pretty good now; I can spend more time with you guys, can't I?"

Nia murmured an assent, leaning against Jimmy and snuggling up in his embrace.

These days, Jimmy had been contemplating. At least at the Manhattan office currently, his age was quite conspicuous. From Dave's perspective, staying low wasn't necessarily a bad thing, just a bit frustrating. If given a choice, he would prefer joining a smaller team where he could contribute, even if it meant sharing credit with others, rather than drinking tea and reading newspapers at work every day.

However, such thoughts were destined to be unrealistic in the current environment. Given Jimmy's skills, if given a chance, he would undoubtedly accomplish a lot.

-----------------

The negotiations on Dave's side weren't going smoothly; the greatest pressure was actually on him. The contents uncovered in the investigation were all with him, a lot of which couldn't be directly stated because it would implicate other agencies. Being perceived as provoking others would be even more troublesome.

Without sufficient reasons, overthrowing the conclusions that everyone had previously agreed upon was extremely difficult. Helplessly, Dave had to bring out part of Jimmy's background. Everyone already knew about the NYPD and the Church; it was only when he deliberately emphasized that Jimmy's wedding used the St. Andrew Cathedral on Staten Island that they started paying more attention. Next came the DEA, USSS, Federal Court Police — a whole series of collaborating agencies, with the DIA saved for last as the key figure. This finally managed to suppress certain individuals' impulses of outraged humiliation.

Not being in the position made it hard to appreciate the pressure Jimmy brought.

Calling Jimmy out, Dave and Jimmy stood by the East River, facing it while smoking. When the cigarette was almost done, Dave flicked the butt into the river and asked softly, "Jimmy, what's your relationship with the CIA and DIA? Their people attended your wedding."

Jimmy threw away his cigarette butt too, took out a pack, drew out two cigarettes, and handed one to Dave. "It's a familial relation. I told you before, my mother was once the CIA's Asia-Pacific Region director, and my grandfather was a former DIA deputy director. My grandfather had many comrades and friends, who care for me very much."

Dave lit another cigarette, exhaling a puff of smoke, "So what's the current situation?"

Jimmy: "They've all passed away, but some connections remain."

Dave: "Then why haven't you mentioned these before?"

Jimmy: "No need. I can handle the matters myself without involving them. With an FBI and NYPD background, plus the Church connection, my current life is pretty good."

Dave fell silent. Jimmy's personality really was different from theirs. He tended to keep everything bottled up, waiting for others to guess, speaking bluntly, a quiet type. In the workplace, those with strong backgrounds usually disclosed them to some people, using these advantages to ascend more easily and sway situations in their favor during disputes. Jimmy, with his powerful background, playing the silent card was truly risky, especially since he never voiced any claim for promotion.

Given Jimmy's currently mentioned background, even if his problem-solving skills were lacking, securing a mid-level position and coasting through was fairly easy. The United States is a capitalist society and also a social network society. Their intersections aren't actually that rare; it's just that oftentimes, people don't directly encounter each other.

If Jimmy wanted to leave the FBI, he could go wherever he wanted, and others would likely welcome him with open arms. Such a person is a rarity anywhere, yet the FBI was doing the opposite.

Dave stayed silent, so Jimmy didn't speak further. With the background said, the rest was beyond his control.

"What about that black guy?"

"He's gone already, I told you, he won't be a threat."

"Alright then, get some rest; it's going to get busy afterward."

After speaking, Dave tossed away the half-smoked cigarette and walked away from the riverbank.

Jimmy stayed put, waiting until Dave got into a nearby parked car and drove away before turning around and sitting on a nearby bench. This time, Dave had urgently called him out without revealing the topic, but from the result, it seemed like his time sitting on the sidelines might be coming to an end.

Madame Valdez was right; he had a lot of background, all of which were his strengths. Even without these people publicly showing themselves, once Jimmy demonstrated his connections, there were still plenty of insightful people.

The wait wasn't long; within a few days, Ruiz came to confirm Jimmy's intentions. Leaving the Support Team was a good thing, and Jimmy naturally agreed. His new position would take a while to finalize, apparently, this shift wasn't within the normal adjustment range.

Ruiz remained very concerned with Dave's attitude change, being unaware of the exchange between Jimmy and Dave due to an information gap. However, it wasn't a major issue. His relationship with Jimmy was evidently closer than with Dave, so one evening after work, he called Jimmy to a gentleman's club. After some leisure time, he revealed his intentions to Jimmy.

Unfazed, Jimmy did not withhold information. Since Dave already knew, it was fine for Ruiz to know as well. Thus, the extensive network surrounding Jimmy lay bare before Ruiz, who also learned the identities of those attending Jimmy's engagement and wedding.

When someone possesses formidable strength and substantial backing, many rules become invalid to them. Of course, Ruiz wasn't solely acting out of curiosity; the gathering also served to preliminarily disclose Jimmy's next position.

The Anti-Gang Unit's David was reassigned to another office. Jimmy would be leaving the Support Team to move to the Anti-Gang Unit, while the Support Team would revert under the Homicide Team, overseen by its current leader, Ray.

Jimmy was quite surprised. He couldn't possibly be uninterested in the Anti-Gang Unit Ruiz previously managed, but wasn't placing him in this position too risky?

This was New York, the hub for various gangs. Putting a butcher detective with countless kills here, were they planning to recreate something like 9/11?
