Chapter 1520 - 816: Tacit Understanding Among Colleagues
Jimmy, Hank, and Gomez stood in front of the DEA building, waiting for the teams to return. The most crucial phase of the investigation in this operation was already completed. If the arrests failed, it wouldn't be Jimmy's problem, and he might as well enjoy watching the DEA lose face, which could also be considered a pleasant surprise.
Actually, just by observing the returning convoy, you could tell everything was basically fine. Otherwise, at this moment, Hank's phone would certainly be ringing.
The SWAT team at the chicken farm was the first to act; naturally, because of the distance, they were also the last to return. However, in the convoy were three trucks painted with the Fried Chicken Brothers logo. These three trucks were tools for this operation's transportation; however, the cargo in the trucks wasn't completely checked and needed to be brought back for processing.
The chicken farm area was also sealed off, and the warehouse Jimmy discovered was of utmost importance. The forensics team followed the action personnel there, and they began their examinations right after the scene was controlled.
Actually, Jimmy was a bit hasty in casting the net this time. There is still one crucial thing unclear, which is the location of centralized drug funds management. Unfortunately, Gus's incident interrupted Jimmy's plan to continue the investigation.
The drug money obtained from the cartel wasn't directly confiscated. Not only the FBI or DEA but even the police who cooperated in the action could share a portion. Even if not openly claimed, the fact that a large blue meth trafficking cartel was destroyed yet no substantial cash was acquired was really a setback.
Of course, it wasn't completely fruitless. Cash was indeed found at Gus's house and in the restaurant he frequented, estimated to be around one or two million, and basically no FBI personnel were involved, so there's nothing for them here.
It's impossible for Jimmy to interrogate so many people by himself; naturally, he needed to mobilize a large number of DEA agents to simultaneously interrogate everyone separately. But before the interrogations, Jimmy and Hank needed to conduct a simple briefing for them.
In the big conference room, all agents involved in the interrogation gathered. Except for a few seats in the front circle, everyone else had to stand against the wall, watching as Jimmy rolled over a pre-prepared whiteboard, along with surveillance footage edited by the monitoring team. Jimmy detailed all the leads they had discovered, piecing together a complete production and distribution chain for drug trafficking. The key part is that all critical nodes of this chain are within the scope of this operation, so every agent needs to focus on their assigned segment to ensure targeted questioning during the interrogation.
The greatest credit for this investigation was already claimed by Jimmy early on, so the interrogation process was entirely handed over to the DEA. After finishing his briefing and answering some questions, Jimmy dismissed everyone to get to work and pushed Hank into the small conference room they previously used, to rest here.
He wasn't trying to slack off; the thing is, the DEA was too slack in this investigation. If they couldn't achieve substantial merits, it wouldn't be acceptable up and down the ranks. Hank had already discussed this privately with Jimmy after a briefing from his superior. Jimmy is not someone who insists on taking everything; he will definitely allocate a portion of the credit. Of course, another part of the reason is Hank, who got implicated due to Walter.
Thanks to their application, Walter surrendered himself and, as a witness, will testify to some of the roles and personnel involved. Additionally, there's a witness protection plan applied for by DEA. As for the request he previously made for Jesse Pinkman, that's no longer necessary.
According to the DEA's plan, Walter's family will leave New Mexico once the case is processed and sentences are handed down. The destination is unclear for now, but a name change is assured. The primary focus is still their protection; after all, taking down a large trafficking cartel at once means their higher-ups are still part of the Mexican drug group, so they must be moved away for protection.
Back at the hotel, Jimmy checked his watch, it was time to dial Alejandro's number. "Received the map, thanks."
Alejandro: "You're welcome. By the way, are they your targets or among them? Need help?"
Jimmy smiled slightly. With coordinates obtained for satellite mapping, Alejandro probably already understands whose area is being investigated. "If possible, that would be great, but are you available now? I can't be sure what impact it may have on you."
Alejandro already knew, and he had a stake on the Mexico border too. Although not responsible for everything, there's still action worth taking, benefiting both publicly and privately. "Things never end; I still need time for sleep and beers. I'm not a robot, right?"
Jimmy pondered for a few seconds before saying, "I need a round-trip method and some tools."
Alejandro: "OK, say no more, I'll handle it. When?"
Jimmy: "In the next couple of days."
Alejandro: "OK, let's discuss it when we meet."
Even though using an anonymous phone, neither Jimmy nor Alejandro mentioned any names or targets on the call. They also avoided saying anything that might trigger NSA alerts, preventing the system from flagging them and being discovered.
It's worth noting that Alejandro was well-prepared quickly, before dawn a message with time, address, and names arrived on Jimmy's phone. It's because he doesn't need much sleep that he could see it promptly; otherwise, waiting until morning to find the message would have undoubtedly resulted in a bit of scrambling.
