Chapter 1480 - 796: Disaster Comes from the Mouth
Chapter 1480 - 796: Disaster Comes from the Mouth
Jimmy heard Cage's words and suddenly understood. It seemed like after he killed the monster, the souls absorbed by it returned to Cage. This meant that the dissipating threads were actually the souls it absorbed. Besides the ones completely absorbed by the monster, some were not fully absorbed due to time or other reasons, and returned to their owners when the monster died.
Jimmy: "Are you sure?"
Cage nodded: "Yeah, I can feel it."
Jimmy: "Alright, I'll go find James now."
Even though it's already evening, Cage didn't let Jimmy go alone. Although the anesthesia used at the community hospital wasn't much, it could still affect Jimmy to some extent, so Cage wasn't assured.
When they arrived at the hospital and before entering the ward, they heard James's sobbing. Jimmy glanced through the window on the door and saw that Mary was already awake.
James had obviously just cried, as he was holding Mary's hand and speaking softly, with a trace of tears still in his voice.
Jimmy looked at Cage; Cage had recovered in the afternoon. For Mary, it was evidently much later, perhaps because Cage was closer to the monster, or maybe because Cage was just recently absorbed, so it was easier for the souls to return. Anyway, since Mary was awake, there should be no issue now.
Jimmy knocked on the door, entered the ward, and smiled to congratulate Mary on regaining consciousness, assuring James that he could be relieved now. James looked at Jimmy's exposed skin with a few band-aids on it, stood up in surprise, and said, "What happened, Jimmy?"
Jimmy shrugged: "Nothing, just a few minor injuries."
James looked at Cage, who nodded slightly, then shook his head, indicating it was not appropriate to discuss now. So he didn't ask further, just reached out to gently hug Jimmy, patting his back lightly, and whispered "thank you" before letting him go.
Jimmy's injuries most likely had to do with Mary's recovery. Cage's shaking his head meant this matter shouldn't be discussed in front of Mary. Since this was a supernatural incident, Jimmy had confirmed Mary's schedule in the morning. He must have spent the day searching and killing the monster, which resulted in these scars — what a good kid.
James turned to Mary: "Mary, you should rest well. I need to go tidy up a bit."
Mary smiled and nodded, and James left the ward with Jimmy and Cage. They returned to James's house without any trouble on the way.
Back home, it was the first chance for James to inquire what exactly happened today. Jimmy explained briefly without much detail, especially not about killing the big black snake in the woods. But he reminded Cage to check out cases related to the marshland once he returned to the police station — those people were probably victimized by this creature.
Cage nodded, but obviously was too lazy to dig into the past cases. They had been sealed and revealing them now would be pointless. Without catching the perpetrator or having evidence, even if uncovered, they would still remain sealed.
Cage suddenly remembered the young man who was in a coma today. He looked at Jimmy and said, "That young man who was comatose today shouldn't have anything to do with this monster. I received a call from the hospital while you were in surgery, revealing that blood tests showed a large amount of methamphetamine in his system, indicating he had taken drugs before losing consciousness."
Jimmy was speechless. He actually pondered about this when returning to the nearby campsite with Cage earlier. He was convinced the comatose person was affected by the monster. But after killing the monster and going for hospital treatment, he completely forgot about it. Now that Cage mentioned it, it turns out the person wasn't attacked by the monster but rather overdosed himself. Such a coincidence.
Jimmy: "Was he revived?"
Cage nodded: "They've managed to save him, but he's a bit incoherent now. We'll have to wait before we can figure out the real story. I've asked Noah to follow up on the situation."
James: "Jimmy, would you consider staying here for a few more days before going back?" He pointed to Jimmy's wounds, noting that everything was fine when he left New York. If he returned to New York sporting these injuries, it would probably alarm Nia and the others.
Jimmy sighed, thinking if it were just scratches, it wouldn't be that bad as they heal quickly. But the few puncture wounds wouldn't recover as swiftly, "I definitely have to wait a few days. I don't want Nia to see these."
James: "Then stay at my place. Here's the key, treat this as your home. I need to go back to the hospital to accompany Mary later."
Jimmy shook his head: "I'd rather stay at a hotel, it's more convenient over there."
James: "There's no need for a hotel when you're here. That's settled; you know where the guest room is."
James was adamant, Jimmy declined politely, leading to some back and forth until Cage put an end to it with a remark, "Jimmy's still young and has his nightlife."
Jimmy considered explaining, but any explanation would seem problematic, so he just accepted it.
James had been at the hospital for the past couple of days. Now that Mary was awake, he finally had the mood to freshen up a bit. After Jimmy and Cage left, James took a shower, then took Mary's change of clothes back to the hospital.
Jimmy returned to the hotel, stood in front of the bathroom mirror, and took off his clothes to inspect the wounds thoroughly. There weren't many major wounds, but quite a few minor ones. His white shirt had been soaked with blood when he emerged from the woods. Looking at the rows of bandages on his body, he couldn't help but let out a bitter smile.
