Chapter 1459 786: Return
Chapter 1459 786: Return
The Dark Tower World is referred to as the Central World, a magical but declining world. There are many ruins here, and judging by the ruins, there must once have been a highly civilized world here. However, except for leaving some ruins, the original civilization has left nothing behind over time.
The current Central World is akin to a medieval fantasy world. Some have figured out how to use ancient equipment found within the ruins, but most people remain ordinary folk, primarily surviving through agriculture and animal husbandry.
For Roland, after determining his position, he began searching for a teleportation portal he had used before. When he and Jack returned from the Dark Tower World to New York, they used that portal. It's been rarely visited since then. Now, with the need to connect to the teleportation portal on Jimmy's side, he must choose a concealed and safe portal. That portal, in his memory, coincidentally fits this type, located within a ruin, and conveniently near a village for supplies.
However, the Dark Tower World is not small. Even if he knows the approximate location, it would take months to travel there from here. This is unavoidable, as this world cannot be compared to Earth, with transportation being primitive, either by walking or horseback. There are no motor vehicles or airplanes, and coupled with the desolate world and scant settlements, quick travel is often impossible.
There's another significant reason: because the world is in decay, various monsters in the darkness occasionally come to the Dark Tower World. As the last Gunman, solving these issues and protecting this world is his responsibility, inevitably slowing him down.
Since the death of the man in black, Walter Padick, there has been no one aiming to destroy the Dark Tower itself and plunge the world into chaos teeming with monsters.
Walter, as the most powerful Wizard at the time, orchestrated the mass death of the Gunman group. Only Roland survived, thanks to absorbing a piece of Merlin's rainbow that prevented Walter's magic from affecting him directly. Ever since, Roland has pursued Walter.
Jack appeared in the Dark Tower World after and met Roland, spending some time in this world, and learning about Roland's arch-nemesis Walter.
Walter once used children with Flash Spirit abilities to activate the ancient weapons left behind, bombarding the Dark Tower. When the Dark Tower was attacked, multiple worlds experienced earthquakes or other calamities. Though Walter was eventually killed by Roland, those initial attacks undeniably caused significant damage, creating many weak areas in the Dark Tower World, allowing monsters and demons to invade. His actions undoubtedly accelerated the world's decline.
The Dark Tower, as the center of the world, its existence symbolizes stability for multiple worlds, and one of the Gunman's responsibilities is to protect the Dark Tower.
Months later, Roland finally found his target. Only when he arrived at the ruins did he realize it was already completely desolate.
Previously, the village beneath the ruins was now completely abandoned. A place once bustling with people was now overgrown with weeds, houses dilapidated, many burnt down. If the houses had been closer together, one fire would surely have spread widely.
On the ground and in houses were many dried and decayed skeletons; judging by their number, it seems all the people of this village died long ago, without their bodies being buried. It's clear no signs of human life have been seen here for years.
Roland's expression turned grim. He and Jack had once received a reading from a Spiritualist here, which helped them learn Walter's location. The villagers also activated the generator to power up the teleportation portal, allowing him and Jack to return to New York.
When attacked by Walter's men, they merely killed those attackers before leaving hastily, not waiting for the villagers to recover. Now, it seems the village was attacked after their departure, and knowing Walter's character, he must have slaughtered everyone here.
Roland continued toward the ruins and soon reached the teleportation portal they had used. The monitor on the controller was not lit, and the external generator wasn't running; there was no power now.
Roland looked around, confirming no bodies or skeletons were near the portal. It seems when Walter arrived, they had already closed the portal, focusing on cleaning up the village's aftermath, which conveniently spared the portal from Walter's destruction; his luck wasn't too bad.
Leaving the ruins, he looked down at the village and couldn't help but stand stunned. No matter what, he and Jack returned to New York thanks to their help in activating the teleportation portal. Their suffering at Walter's hands is largely due to Roland and Jack, and now leaving their bodies exposed in the open and in houses seemed somewhat heartless.
However, there were too many deceased here; Roland couldn't possibly bury them all, and digging so many graves was unrealistic. Thus, he had no choice but to opt for cremation.
