Chapter 1422 767: Temptation (Part 2)

-----------------

The news from Dave's side is still quick, but this time it seems a bit different. Jimmy received a call from the hotel front desk. Someone had delivered a package for him.

Jimmy asked the front desk to send up the package. Inside were several character files and a note with just Dave's name on it.

He didn't call but sent it via documents. Clearly, it was to avoid suspicion, but is this something that can avoid suspicion? If Jimmy investigates the people inside, there will undoubtedly be traces. If anyone has questions, Jimmy simply can't explain it away.

Dave is just causing trouble for himself. The people from previous investigations didn't appear in those records, making it hard to integrate them perfectly into a report. If an investigation is to be conducted, a reason is unavoidably needed first.

Jimmy had no choice but to call Mrs. Harriton and her lawyer, Sebastian, hoping to meet with them face to face. After all, his case remained unresolved, and ever since their last meeting, providing information, they hadn't granted him another opportunity. This wasn't reasonable.

Yet this reason was directly rejected by them. Mrs. Harriton claimed she was currently recuperating from surgery, making it inconvenient to see anyone.

Jimmy didn't indulge them further and directly contacted the New York office's technicians to pull up Mrs. Harriton's phone location.

This was really a headache. He had just alerted Mrs. Harriton, and now he had to meet again to trace the origins of his clues. Had he known, he wouldn't have acted yet. It would've been more convenient to visit when Mrs. Harriton was at the mansion. Now she had gone to a safe house, making things slightly more troublesome for Jimmy.

However, it's fortunate. Since the call was connected earlier, using the phone to locate someone is still feasible for FBI technicians. It's just unexpected that she didn't choose to hide in a desolate suburb but instead went to a high-end apartment in the city. Maybe it's because there are more people here, and she's betting the other party wouldn't dare act in such a place?

Sometimes, it's really hard to understand what these wealthy people are thinking. But since it's in the city center, it's more convenient for Jimmy. He arrived at the apartment building and dialed Mrs. Harriton's number again, but this time directly stated their location, saying he was already downstairs. If she didn't agree to meet, she would bear the consequences.

Some people truly have to see the coffin before they shed tears. Being too nice leaves an impression of being weak and easily bullied. Previously, Mrs. Harriton's impression of Jimmy was just that—a regular FBI agent, nothing special.

Now, facing the forceful call and realizing he figured out her location with just one call, she finally didn't continue refusing Jimmy. She sent a bodyguard downstairs to bring Jimmy up, and he finally saw Mrs. Harriton again.

Jimmy: "Good afternoon, Mrs. Harriton. How is your health?"

Mrs. Harriton was no longer bedridden, just resting in a wheelchair, "Sorry, the doctor instructed that I still need some time to recuperate, so I haven't met with you these past days. Is there something I can assist you with, Agent?"

Jimmy: "Oh, as long as you're fine." He took out the documents provided by lawyer Sebastian from his briefcase, tapping them, "These are the materials you provided last time. I've conducted some investigations, but quite unexpectedly, many of these people have already gone into hiding. I want to know why?"

Mrs. Harriton's expression looked somewhat unnatural. Jimmy stared at her face and suddenly said, "And another thing, why have you chosen to recuperate here instead of your manor? What happened there?"

Mrs. Harriton replied in surprise, "How do you know... Oh, it's nothing. It's just a bit more convenient here, closer to the hospital."

Jimmy shook his head: "You mean just because it's closer, you moved in here with several bodyguards? I'm an FBI agent, not a reporter. Do you think I'll believe that reason?"

Mrs. Harriton's facial expression kept changing, but Jimmy didn't give her time to come up with a reason, leaning forward near Mrs. Harriton and raising his voice: "Is someone trying to kill you? How did you know?"

The bodyguard standing nearby suddenly stepped closer, and Mrs. Harriton waved her hand, making the guard retreat a bit, returning to his original position. Mrs. Harriton said, "The night before last, someone intruded into my manor and fired a shot. But he immediately left after firing, and we didn't find any trace of the intruder, nor do we know who it was."

Jimmy stared at Ms. Harriton: "Mrs. Harriton, I highly respect your privacy, but your husband was assassinated just a month ago, and now you've been shot at by an unknown assailant. Why didn't you notify me about such critical matters? What are you hiding? Do you know who did this?"

Jimmy was now more like an enraged agent because their decisions caused him to lose his most critical lead recently, "If you had notified me earlier, I could've mobilized technicians to track it down. Maybe we could've found your husband's killer. Now, tell me what exactly happened?"

Mrs. Harriton looked at the guard beside her and nodded. The guard said, "Agent, the intruder at the manor didn't enter the villa, but only fired a shot from outside and escaped."

Jimmy turned his head toward the guard, "I need to know everything that happened."

Guard: "We had infrared alarms set up in the manor that got triggered. Using night vision, we saw someone climbing over the wall and getting closer to the main villa. But he didn't enter the villa. He shot from about twenty or thirty meters away from the main villa building, then turned and escaped, climbing back over the wall.

We stayed alert inside the house when we discovered the intruder; we didn't go out. After they fired the shot and escaped, we pursued but didn't catch up. To ensure safety, we left the manor in the morning and came here. We haven't left since."

Jimmy: "Did you find any clues? Anything the other party left behind or other traces?"

Guard: "I'm sorry, because it was nighttime, we didn't find anything. Moreover, we haven't returned to the manor since leaving, so no further investigation has been conducted there."

Jimmy frowned, thinking for a moment, then looked at Mrs. Harriton: "Mrs. Harriton, you understand the situation you're currently in, right? You're still in danger. I hope you can think carefully. Do you have any suspects? Competitors? Insiders? Or hostile forces?"

Mrs. Harriton sighed and shook her head: "I don't know. We relocated immediately after it happened, and we've been investigating these past two days but found no leads."

Jimmy: "Who knew you returned to the manor? Last time I went there, you were still in the hospital."

Mrs. Harriton paused and didn't answer. After a few seconds, she said, "I had a video meeting with some company people after being discharged but didn't contact anyone else afterward."

Jimmy: "Including your lawyer?"

Mrs. Harriton: "He knows about it."

Jimmy handed the materials they previously provided back to Mrs. Harriton: "I think this information might need updating. Please trust our professionalism."

After taking the documents, Jimmy added, "I suspect this incident is related to Mr. Harriton's murder. Our previous investigation turned up no leads, so let's try a different approach. Besides business rivals, did Mr. Harriton have any other hostile forces? Please think carefully, as there may be something our previous investigation missed. Any leads would help us."

The primary goal this time was to steer the investigation toward opposing factions. That's the only way to target and investigate the people Dave highlighted. Otherwise, Jimmy really couldn't act, especially since he never expected Dave to pull such a fast one with delivering the documents, leaving him unable to pass the blame.
