Chapter 1277 - 698: Failed Capture (2)
Chapter 1277 - 698: Failed Capture (2)
The team that Jimmy was with was responsible for the logistics company, which was the most likely place for him to appear. After all, it's daytime, and even under a disguised identity, one still has to go to work during the day.
The security situation in Baltimore was terrible. While driving with local Baltimore agents to that company, Jimmy's team discovered at least two incidents involving gunfire. They heard the sound of gunshots and police sirens. It was thrilling. If they weren't on a mission, Jimmy would've stopped to watch the action.
There weren't many people working at the logistics company. A few agents left someone to guard the front door while the rest rushed in, dressed in FBI windbreakers and bullet-proof vests, identifying themselves, presenting an arrest warrant, and sealing off the entrances and exits. They then found their duty manager with the security guard's help, but Frank was nowhere to be found in the company.
Frank was a truck driver and wasn't someone who stayed in the office. Besides taking on transport tasks or coming back for paperwork, he normally wouldn't be at the company.
According to the information in their company's management system, Frank was supposed to have gone to a warehouse near the Baltimore Port to pick up goods. Their company had a large cold storage facility there.
Jimmy also had them retrieve a bit of extra information. Frank had just returned from vacation and started working again. He took a week off, which coincided with the time in Washington, D.C.
After receiving the news, the agents prepared to head to the Baltimore Port. They couldn't act against the company just yet, even though they knew it was merely a front for smuggling operations. But with this suspicion, the agents from the Baltimore office certainly wouldn't let this company slide and would likely start an investigation here.
The Baltimore Port is one of the most important ports on the United States East Coast, with an annual throughput that ranks in the top ten of major U.S. ports. The main imports and exports are various minerals and raw materials, along with goods like food, machinery, and chemicals. With such a scale of transport, hiding smuggled goods isn't difficult, especially at a predominantly bulk cargo port.
Jimmy's team targeted a large, modern architectural complex on the northeast side of Baltimore, a warehouse district. Many companies rented warehouses here. The area was adjacent to the highway, with a large parking lot at the front. Only a few trucks and cold chain transport vehicles were parked here, with more trucks parked within the district loading and unloading goods.
The FBI was going for an open arrest this time, so there wasn't any surprise attack. After showing their badges and arrest warrant to the security outside, they entered the warehouse district. However, the area was quite large, and they still needed to search for Frank.
Jimmy stayed back at the end. He went to the security office to check vehicle entry and exit logs, as this was a warehouse and not a public parking lot. Entries and exits had to be recorded.
Jimmy checked the vehicles that had entered and exited in the last half hour and confirmed there were no license plates registered under Frank. Only then did he leave the security office to join the other agents in checking inside.
There were still quite a few staff members in the warehouse district. The agents searched inside, stopping passersby to compare photos of Frank and asking, "Where is Frank Walsh?"
This warehouse wasn't owned by a single company. Although the agents knew which warehouse number belonged to that company, nobody knew if Frank was in another location, so their progress was slow since they had to examine everyone.
"Stop, Frank!" "I found him!"
In the distance, an agent shouted while running and simultaneously pressed the radio to notify others. Jimmy and several agents inspecting the warehouse district also rushed over upon receiving the message.
"Bang bang," the gunfire erupted before Jimmy's team even reached the location. The radio quickly broadcasted the message, "Ah, I've been shot. The suspect is fleeing northward."
Jimmy's team caught up to find an agent leaning against the warehouse wall, aiming forward with a gun in his right hand, while clutching his abdomen with his left. Blood was already staining his hand—a sign the wound was quite serious.
They left one agent to care for the injured and notify an ambulance while the rest continued pursuing northward.
The gunfire in the warehouse district obviously startled others. Whether it happened nearby or not, staff were fleeing or hiding in corners. Jimmy's team didn't catch a sight of Frank Walsh, so they pursued forward based on the agent's words, unaware of any hiding places in adjacent warehouses.
"Raise your hands, let me see your hands!"
Jimmy was pursuing when he saw someone holding a gun above him from a nearby warehouse, sidling at the open doorway to observe the pursuing agents outside. He immediately raised his Glock towards the warehouse, turning and running over.
The person inside was puzzled, seeing Jimmy's raised gun; how did someone spot him from behind the wall?
"Bang bang," gunfire resounded as the person inside fired two shots at Jimmy and dashed further into the warehouse. Jimmy's commotion alerted agents ahead pursuing Frank, who followed him to the warehouse entrance, but unlike Jimmy, they hesitated to chase inside.
Jimmy could certainly give chase. He clearly saw the shooter moving away from the entrance, running inside, posing no immediate danger. Soon they were split into three parts, with one fleeing at the front, Jimmy chasing behind, and other agents following but moving much slower.
The door on the other side of the warehouse opened, with two people outside supporting the person ahead of Jimmy. But blocked by goods, he couldn't see them clearly. As Jimmy reached the corner, he fired a shot towards the door, aiming for the waist, hitting successfully. However, the person didn't immediately fall but lunged toward the back door. The two supporters, after the gunshot, fired at Jimmy's position. Jimmy had to dodge briefly before retaliating.
The Glock's dozen rounds were enough for Jimmy to waste. Without showing himself, he side-fired towards the doorway, hitting the two assistants, causing them to tumble aside. Those three were now truly unfortunate companions.
"Drop your guns, raise your hands."
Agents from behind rushed upon hearing gunfire. Jimmy hadn't had a chance to fire more rounds at the three before other agents were already shouting at the doorway.
"Bang bang," gunfire resounded again as the three outside struggled to rise, firing randomly inside the warehouse without aiming at anyone. But it still made agents hide behind goods while the three turned to flee.
Now it was really out of hand. Jimmy charged towards the entrance at lightning speed and emptied a magazine at the three's position as he darted out, shooting them down before quickly replacing his spare magazine.
Seeing Jimmy charge out, the trailing agents followed, witnessing the three collapsed in a heap and Jimmy changing magazines.
The agents rushed forward, subduing the three immediately, followed by one agent shouting, "It's not Frank."
FXXK, they hit the wrong people.
Jimmy cursed in frustration, leaving two to guard them while the others continued through the warehouse in pursuit of the earlier direction.
This blunder turned monumental. This warehouse was apparently another smuggling or gang warehouse. Hearing gunfire and seeing the FBI chasing someone, the men pulled out their guns in alertness, mistaking them for Frank, triggering a brief gunfight. But this wrong target made Jimmy's team lose their primary target completely. By the time they reached the warehouse district's outskirts, Frank's trace was utterly lost.
